The Beatles hated "The Beatles (1965)," the television cartoon show of them, which was also produced by Al Brodax and George Dunning. When the producers approached them about this movie, the group agreed only as an easy way of completing their movie contract. They contributed a few old songs and four quickly produced numbers: "Only a Northern Song", "Hey Bulldog", "All Together Now", and "It's All Too Much". They were so impressed by the finished movie that they decided to appear in a short live-action epilogue to the movie.

Goofs
The Beatles spot five Apple Bonkers taking apples off a tree. Only four Bonkers march and sound off before a Meanie Squad Leader.

Quotes
Ringo: Hey, I wonder what'll happen if I pull this lever.
Old Fred: Oh, you mustn't do that now.

Crazy credits
The lyric "All Together Now" is shown in several different languages while the song plays at the end.

Alternate versions
The American version had several alternative shots during the "All You Need Is Love" song, among others: the population of Pepperland moves in at the Blue Meanies; Paul McCartney doing a somersault, a brief scene of Old Fred and the Mayor dancing together happily. The UK version featured alternate footage, like George floating down from Sgt Pepper's head, saying "It's all in the mind, you know".

Inventive, hilarious, and visually extraordinary

'Yellow Submarine' is a visual stunner and an extremely well-scripted movie. There are lots of Beatles in jokes, George's fascination with Indian music and John's fascination with scientific theories are lampooned, the Beatles' power is joked about ("Nothing's Beatle Proof!") and poor old Ringo is just plain made fun of. The movie itself is arguably the most psychedelic ever made. The Beatles' descent into Pepperland is just one psychedelic scene after the other. The animation isn't great, but everything is just done so strange and fun that it becomes absolutely irresistible. The colors, landscapes, and creatures are just really different and vivid and vibrant. The songs are fit in very, very well (although "Nowhere Man" is undoubtedly the best sequence). Overall this works great as a musical or as an animated film, and there's definitely a lot of priceless, subtle dialog. I would name it one of the top 20 animated films of all time, really. Definitely worth watching, just because there simply isn't any movie like it.
