Glorious pipes

Just over five years ago, decided to watch a lot of Russian fantasy and animations, out of interest and for some nostalgia. Now during a calmer period, decided to do it again, wanting to relive the happiness felt doing it back them. My experience of Russian fantasy and film in general has been one of great pleasure, back then (especially back then actually) and now.

'Through Fire, Water and...Brass Pipes' is yet another entertaining and beautiful Soviet/Russian film, incorporating fantasy, comedy and romance, and another reason why my re-visiting of Russian films has been more than worthwhile and a great decision. Yet another film where all the fond memories of that period just over five years ago in a quite difficult period at the same time were once again brought back, feelings felt with other recently seen Russian films and that is including other films by Alexander Rou.

It, 'Through Fire, Water and...Brass Pipes' that is, is not perfect. Some of the acting is a little over-the-top in places, especially for Kashchej.

Some of the action is on the overdone clownish side but this is thankfully not frequent and far outweighed by the entertaining and inventive way a lot of the story is told.

Handsomely mounted 'Through Fire, Water and...Brass Pipes' is, the costumes and sets being quite imaginative and magical, with sumptuous colour, and the photography isn't indulgent or static. The score is just lovely to listen to and very distinctively Russian in sound, complete with some sparkling songs that

Writing is charming and the satirical humour is hilarious, very witty and smart. The story, one that is texturally rich with a lot going on without being overstuffed, also on the whole enchants, with lots of fun and charm (the romantic elements warming the heart) and quite a lot of parts done imaginatively and with a sense of wonder.

Characters are archetypal yet engaging and likeable (loved the goat), and most of the acting appeals.

Overall, very enjoyable. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Awful

I am so sorry for all the people who put their effort into this film but to me it is just awful. The cheap costumes and special effects don't bother me at all, but the overacting, the storry and the music was a pain to me. Usually I enjoy old russian movies but I can't recommend this one at all.
