Prequel for the TV series, "Gentle Ben" (1965). The movie was originally meant to be released before first episode of the TV series aired, but the film's debut was pushed back so it would be hit theaters just before Thanksgiving.
The film was an independent production picked up for release by Paramount Pictures. Paramount relinquished the rights after it left theaters, and the film was sold to National Telefilm Associates for TV distribution. NTA later became Republic Pictures in 1984, and merged with Spelling Entertainment in 1994. Paramount acquired Spelling in 1999, and now has full ownership of the film.
