Shot in 1966 and released in Italy in 1967, the production was considered unreleasable in the United States. It was eventually given a limited release by Cinerama in 1971 but faded quickly.
The film was made and first released about forty-four years after its source novel of the same name by Joseph Conrad had been first published in 1923.
