This film was loosely based on a real incident that happened a couple years earlier. A U.S. B52 Bomber crashed in the Mediterranean Sea with a several H-Bombs aboard. Several of the crew perished, the bombs fortunately did not detonate and were recovered, but a massive cleanup of the area needed to be done. There are still levels of radioactivity in the area today.
