The scenes at the island resort were filmed at Vizcaya, an Italianate villa on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida. The estate, built in 1916, was originally the winter home of International Harvester vice president James Deering. The house and grounds are now a museum open to tourists.
At the time this movie was filmed, Edward Asner and Cloris Leachman were also co-starring in the groundbreaking sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970), as Mary's boss Lou Grant and her annoying landlady Phyllis Lindstrom.
The premise, both light and dark, has been re-made many times over the decades. Besides the obvious "Fantasy Island" similarities, the most recent version is the Hulu series "Nine Perfect Strangers" in 2021.
Lloyd Bridges and Anne Francis had previously been screen castmates in Lost Flight (1970), Bridges and Francis being the leads in that TV-movie whose premise had some similarity to that of ''Haunts of the Very Rich''.
Edward Asner and Anne Francis had previously been screen castmates in The Satan Bug (1965), in which Francis starred and Asner had a supporting role.
