Gordon Pinsent, one of Canada’s most iconic actors, has died. He was 92 and died in his sleep Saturday, his family confirmed.

“Gordon Pinsent’s daughters Leah and Beverly, and his son Barry, would like to announce the passing of their father peacefully in sleep today with his family at his side,” said a note written on behalf of Pinsent’s family by his son-in-law, actor Peter Keleghan.

“Gordon passionately loved this country and its people, purpose, and culture to his last breath.”

Pinsent’s career spanned dozens of films and TV projects over six decades, including Away From Her, Due South, The Red Green Show, Babar and the Adventures of Badou, The Grand Seduction and The Shipping News, The Forest Rangers, Quentin Durgens, M.P., the original Street Legal and Republic of Doyle, among others.

Prime Video has no shortage of shows or movies arriving in September. The biggest new show on the block for Amazon Studios is “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” which is a prequel based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien that’s set thousands of years before the events of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings.” Several new 2022 films will be available on the streamer as well: including Channing Tatum’s “Dog,” Michael Bay’s “Ambulance,” Zac Efron’s “Firestarter,” Dylan O’Brien’s “The Outfit,” and more.

Noteworthy library titles arriving this month include “Fight Club” (1999), “Legally Blonde” (2001) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

Rock Hudson and George Peppard are WWII commandos in “Tobruk,” available on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber. Hudson is Major Donald Craig, a Canadian prisoner of war on board a German transport ship anchored off an Italian controlled port in North Africa sometime in late 1942. A group of frogmen surface near the ship and sneak on board with silencers fixed to their guns in order to kidnap Craig. The frogmen are led by Captain Bergman (George Peppard) who is part of a team of German commandos. They take Craig to a German airfield and fly him to a desert landing strip. They’re unexpectedly greeted by a group of British soldiers led by Colonel Harker (Nigel Green). It turns out Bergman is the leader of German Jews who fled Nazi Germany for obvious reasons and are now part of...

Billy Goldenberg, the Emmy-winning composer and songwriter, died Monday night at his home in New York City. He was 84.

Goldenberg wrote the themes for such 1970s TV series as “Kojak,” “Harry O” and “Rhoda,” composed the pilot scores for “Night Gallery” and “Columbo,” and won Emmys for the TV-movie “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and miniseries “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin,” “King” and “Rage of Angels.”

He expanded his 1975 “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” song score, with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, into the score of the 1978 Broadway musical “Ballroom,” directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. It earned eight Tony nominations including Best Musical.

One of those hits focused on two women trying to make their way any way they could. Laverne & Shirley is where our love affair with Penny Marshall started.

Penny Marshall passed away in her Hollywood Hills home last night at the age of 75. She began her career playing a woman bucking the system, and she never slowed down.

Laverne & Shirley was hardly Marshall's first acting credit.

Her first part is uncredited as a dancer on the Jackie Gleason show in 1953. From there, she went on to several movie roles and supporting parts in a plethora of hit TV shows of the day such as That Girl, The Bob Newhart Show, Banacek, The Odd Couple and Mary Tyler Moore.

It was in 1974 that she landed the role of Laverne DeFazio on Happy Days,...

Screenwriter behind Hammer films such as Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein

In 1957, Hammer Films revived gothic horror – in abeyance in a decade that offered nuclear or cosmic horrors which made the classic monsters seem tame – with The Curse of Frankenstein, directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. To hear him tell it, Jimmy Sangster, who has died aged 83, wrote the script because no one else would, and simply typed it out and turned it in.

Yet Sangster came up with a new story – owing as little to Mary Shelley's novel as to James Whale's earlier film – and a radical depiction of Frankenstein as a determined, charming yet corrupt dandy who could still chill in an era of nuclear proliferation. Kiddie country sensation Taylor Swift is coming to town. Just for kicks I checked Stubhub to see how much people were willing to resell tickets to the sold out show. I nearly threw up my Twinkie when I saw quite a few seats priced at $l,200. That’s not a typo. They are expecting some parent to pay $1,2000 for their kid to see a twig with a blonde wig. Since the kid isn’t of driving age, that means the parent is willing to pay $2,400 to make their kid happy. While the seats were on the floor, they were nearly 50 rows back from the stage.

For that price, I expect to be close enough to the stage to know if Taylor Swift wears panties or a g-string. I want to be close enough to use qualify as her Ob-gyn. I...

Perhaps the headline reference is too obscure, but those who remember actor George Peppard — who played John 'Hannibal' Smith in the original A-Team series between 1983 and 1987 — might just remember that he also starred in a 1972-74 series called Banacek. Either way, Peppard was known from Banacek forward for his increasingly silver hair...and now it seems as though that visual cue has been kept for the big screen version of The A-Team, currently filming in Vancouver.

A new photo emerged today of the core cast at work, showing Liam Neeson as Hannibal, with the silver hair intact. You can see the photo directly above, courtesy of ComingSoon.net.

George Eckstein, a TV producer and writer who co-wrote the two-part finale of ABC series "The Fugitive" that captivated the nation in 1967, died Sept. 12 of lung cancer at his home in Los Angeles. He was 81.

In a career that spanned nearly three decades, Eckstein also produced "Duel," the 1971 ABC telefilm directed by a 24-year-old Steven Spielberg. "Duel" starred Dennis Weaver as a motorist terrorized by a mysterious, unseen truck driver.

"George hired me to direct his ABC Movie of the Week, 'Duel,' and my career was never the same," Spielberg said. "I owe so much to him for having the courage to hire a kid to do a man's job. George had passion for telling highly original stories and was a wonderful mentor to me and so many others. I will miss his quiet dignity."

There are only so many hours one can devote to television watching so a show has to garner some excellent buzz in order to get sampled in my household. I was initially tempted by TNT’s Leverage last winter but something or other kept us from trying it but as it aired, people started chiming in about how cool it was. Thanks to Paramount Home Video, the first season was released last week and my wife and I blitzed through the 13 episodes to see what the buzz was all about.

There’s little original about the premise since it’s been heavily compared with the Oceans movie or television’s A-Team. The latter is more apt as is a comparison with Mission: Impossible without the federal angle. In fact, in watching Timothy Hutton’s Nate Ford, he really is a modern day George Peppard, blending his insurance investigator Banacek with his A-Team Hannibal Smith.

Paramount Home Video concludes their Audrey Hepburn review with the fifth entry in their Centennial Collection, the classic Breakfast At Tiffany's, on sale today. It’s interesting that they’re celebrating a century but the first five releases are all from the same era, the 1950s and while this was released in 1961, still has that same look and feel.

The film has withstood the test of time very nicely given the loving touch of director Blake Edwards who oversaw this adaptation of Truman Capote’s novella and made it uniquely his own. In the prose, Holly Golightly never sang “Moon River” nor did she really have a happy ending. Characters differ between story and screenplay and by now, most people know Capote always envisioned Marilyn Monroe in the lead. He was crushed when Hepburn was cast.
