With a run of eighteen years (from 1972 to 1990), this series was the longest running Canadian dramatic prime time television production in Canadian history. It was cancelled as a result of CBC budget cuts, and declining viewership, due to frequently shifting time slots.

Budget cuts also scuttled a planned revival of the series in the early 2000s, though a television movie sequel (albeit with only a few original cast members since Gerussi and Clothier had long since died) was made in 2002.
The series was sold worldwide and was particularly popular in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has also been shown in Australia, Germany, Austria, New Zealand and Ireland.
The title of the series was shortened to Beachcombers in the final season, with CBC explaining that it was the intention to give the aging show a fresh new look.
