Werner Herzog promised the cast he would jump into a field of cacti if they managed to pull through the movie. Eventually, he fulfilled his promise.

In one interview around 2009, Harmony Korine cited this as, for him, the greatest film ever made.

When filming the car sequence with the cast, the man who climbed on the roof of the car actually fell and was run over by the car. Amazingly, he wasn't injured, and continued filming the scene.

Extracts of the screenplay that are featured on the German DVD say: "The title for the film is a pure 'working title'. It has nothing to do with the film. The word 'dwarfs' should not appear in there."

Director Joshua Oppenheimer said in several interviews, that this is one of his favorite films.
