Taina Elg was cast as the female lead after a number of British and American performers had passed on the role and the Rank Studios and Kenneth More had vetoed a number of others.
During the filming of Kenneth More being chased, he pulled a leg muscle but insisted on carrying on without a stand in stunt man even at one point jumping 30 feet from a top story window into a passing lorry containing straw.
Unlike the version made by Alfred Hitchcock, the 1959 "39 Steps" film was filmed extensively around Scotland.
The actress first cast as Mrs McDougal was very ill when she turned up to film her scenes, so she was sent home and Betty Henderson was cast at short notice.
