- Instead of the traditional choice of Paris, Ann, a European princess, decides to travel to New York to choose the designer for her coronation wardrobe. She chose New York because she wanted to experience New York night life, especially hear popular music live. Her escort, her aunt, the Countess Margaret, will have no such thing, she who will only allow Ann to do the more refined things if anything at all beside visit the design houses. On their first night in New York, Ann sneaks out to listen to music and meets Riff Manton, a college student earning some extra money by singing. Riff, who eventually learns who she is, becomes Ann's conduit into the New York popular music scene. Although Riff really likes Ann, he has ulterior motives in gaining her confidence. He had been approached by an earnest man named Balenko, an ex-junk dealer cum aspiring fashion designer, who solely wants to meet the Princess as he knows he can wow her with his designs if only given the opportunity for a meeting. If he gets the opportunity and the coronation wardrobe contract, he vows to give the entire sum earned from the contract to Riff as he only wants the contract as a springboard to launch his design career. Riff agrees if only to help his father, George Manton, a musical theater producer whose name is now box office poison as he hasn't had a hit in six years, but who is trying to make a comeback with a new show called Juke Box Jamboree, a revue show of popular music. Riff not only wants to help his father get the show off the ground for success sake, but also to help save his parent's failing marriage, as George's doubts about himself due to his failures are the biggest part of their marital problems. Leslie Anders, George's wealthy mistress, feels she can best hold on to George by him being dependent on her, which may threaten Riff's plan and Riff and Ann's burgeoning relationship.—Huggo
