Director Delmer Daves fell ill during filming on July 25, 1958, and Karl Malden took over directing the picture and saw the film through post-production. Vincent Sherman served as an uncredited co-director to Malden for one day only.
First credited feature film role for George C. Scott. He previously appeared uncredited in Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) and had a handful of television appearances under his belt, too.
Gary Cooper had a full face-lift and other cosmetic surgery on 16 April 1958, two months before filming began. The procedure was carried out at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital by Dr. John Converse, one of the leading plastic surgeons in the United States. Newspaper articles commenting on the effects of the operation said Cooper's face now looked quite different, and the procedure had not been successful.
