Dilip Kumar was the first choice for the lead role but due to his absence on the opening day of shooting due to unknown reason director Guru Dutt decided to act as the lead actor.

Guru Dutt wanted to shoot on real life red light areas in Calcutta.But his crew was attacked by pimps.Guru Dutt then created the set on basis of photographs.
The film was to be made with Nargis and Madhubala in the roles Mala Sinha and Waheeda Rehman played eventually. However the two actresses were unable to decide which role they wanted to play and Guru Dutt eventually opted for two then new actresses, Mala and Waheeda.
Has been recently restored.
