The Talokanil

We worked with Dr. Gerardo Aldana [Creative Studies dean and professor of Chicano Studies at the department of anthropology at Uc Santa Barbara]. He gave us so many little jewels about what [Mayan culture] is and what it isn’t — a woman who was single, for example, her hair would look [one way] versus a woman who was married, or an older woman. You can’t just go on Google — it’s something that’s been buried, and it’s buried in the ground.

To CNN employees, the most surprising thing about the channel’s morning show announcement was how surprising it was.
CNN’s culture has, for years, been leaky, and big news has often found a way to trickle out. The morning shake-up, which will see Don Lemon depart 10 p.m. for the mornings, joined by veteran anchor Poppy Harlow and White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins, came as a shock to two CNN sources The Hollywood Reporter spoke to (some CNN staff were convinced Lemon would be shown the door by new management).
But maybe it shouldn’t have. Licht, after all, told CNN employees on a daily editorial call after the cancellation of Reliable Sources that they should tune out reporting on the channel, and that no one outside of himself and a select group of CNN executives had any insight into their programming plans and strategy.

Severin’s extravagant four-film six-disc The Complete Umberto Lenzi / Carroll Baker Giallo Collection is a luxurious trip into sexy, violent Italo thrill territory. CineSavant concentrates on the first Lenzi-Baker collaboration, a truly nasty bit of misanthropy that bridges the gap between standard ‘Lady In Peril’ fare and the full-bore giallos that would soon become the norm. It’s presented under its original title, which sounds more appropriate for a porn movie… in the U.S. the given title was Paranoia.

Pat O'Brien movies on TCM: 'The Front Page,' 'Oil for the Lamps of China' Remember Pat O'Brien? In case you don't, you're not alone despite the fact that O'Brien was featured – in both large and small roles – in about 100 films, from the dawn of the sound era to 1981. That in addition to nearly 50 television appearances, from the early '50s to the early '80s. Never a top star or a critics' favorite, O'Brien was nevertheless one of the busiest Hollywood leading men – and second leads – of the 1930s. In that decade alone, mostly at Warner Bros., he was seen in nearly 60 films, from Bs (Hell's House, The Final Edition) to classics (American Madness, Angels with Dirty Faces). Turner Classic Movies is showing nine of those today, Nov. 11, '15, in honor of what would have been the Milwaukee-born O'Brien's 116th birthday. Pat O'Brien and James Cagney Spencer Tracy had Katharine Hepburn.

Sosie Bacon may only be 21, but she has a lot going for her. On top of being 2014's Miss Golden Globe, through her father Kevin Bacon, she is connected to nearly everyone in Hollywood - including every other previous Miss Golden Globe, most of whom are also the daughters (or sons) of industry power players. And while some have a connection through their famous parents, others, such as Laura Dern (who happens to have famous parents), are also connected through their own work. Don't believe us? Here's how you get from young Ms. Bacon to all of her famous predecessors,...

Shortly after 9/11, and very definitely as a personal response to that event, I wrote an article about Requiems for Cdnow, where I worked at the time (just a few blocks away from Ground Zero; fortunately our workday started at 10 Am, so I wasn't there yet that day, but in the weeks that followed there were days where, if the wind came from the wrong direction, we would go home early, it made us so sick). In the years since, I have written about music composed in response to that tragedy, such as John Adams's On the Transmigration of Souls. But now I find myself being drawn back to the Requiem idea. Here's a much-expanded take on it.
This roughly chronological list confines itself to works with a sacred basis, though the 20th century yielded secular Requiems, most notably Paul Hindemith's When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom...

75 years ago today Jean Harlow died. The Platinum Blonde superstar, arguably the ur blonde bombshell that Marilyn Monroe gets the bulk of the credit for being, was only 26 years old. She'd been a sensation since the age of 19 when Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels (1930) premiered. I loved the Scorsese-directed Hughes bio The Aviator (2004) when it premiered because of its handsome snapshot of Old Hollywood Glamour but I never quite understood what Gwen Stefani was doing playing Harlow. I couldn't see the resemblance beyond hair color and anyone can have that; Platinum Blonde does not normally occur through natural means!
When I was a baby cinephile and more familiar with Old Hollywood giants from their still photos than their actual work, Jean Harlow's huge fame and legendary sex appeal confused me. I thought she looked... odd and weirdly masculine (maybe it was the nose and chin? or maybe just my...

Jim Carrey gets down to his roommates' level in Mr. Popper's Penguins.
Jim Carrey (I Love You Phillip Morris) stars in the film Mr. Popper’s Penguins, a family comedy about a driven businessman who is clueless when it comes to the important things in life until he inherits six adorable but mischievous penguins.
The wacky winter birds drive Popper crazy, even as they thrill his children and slowly turn him into a better person. Needless to say, good feelings and family values ultimately save the day.
Based on the 1938 Newbery Medal-winning novel by the husband and wife team of Richard and Florence Atwater, the movie is directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls) and co-stars Angela Lansbury (Harlow) as a kindly socialite and Carla Gugino (Elektra Luxx) as Popper’s ex-wife.

Believe it or not, but there are still some people out there who haven’t seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2! I know this for a fact because my wife is desperate to see it and was thwarted in our attempt to go along to our local multiplex three weeks after our first son was born! She is however excited for this weekend, Potter mayhem strikes back as many cinemas across the UK are still showing it.
As a special treat, those of you who go and watch Potter 7.2 this weekend (Friday 30th September – Sunday 2nd October) will be entitled to come home with your very own limited edition animated poster. I’ve been sent one and I have to say it is rather awesome with the hologram flitting between Voldemort and Harry Potter.
I’ve placed a gif (remember those!) of the poster below and below...

If you live in Britain and you’re keen to avoid 3D screenings of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, then we’ve got the list of where you can see the film in 2D.
We've had a couple of people comment to us over the past week that, whilst they're keen to see Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows on its release tomorrow, they don't want to see it in 3D. Furthermore, they added that they were struggling to find a 2D screening of the film.
With that in mind, we've done a recce of British cinemas to try and come up with a list of the assorted picture houses in the UK that are screening the movie in 2D. And we're pleased to report that there's no shortage of them. (The results show that anyone who does want to see it in 2D will probably have little trouble doing so.

We’ve been getting very, very excited about Back to the Future coming back to the cinema and this morning, those lovely chaps at Universal have provided us with the list of which cinemas in the UK will be showing the movie.
If you didn’t know, Back to the Future has been completely remastered and to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary, Universal Studios are bringing it back to the cinema. We debuted the HD trailer for it a few weeks ago which you can see below. The movie looks better than ever and we highly recommend that you go and see it while it’s on the big screen.
We already knew that The Empire Leicester Square would be showing it (that’s where the premiere was 25 years ago and where we saw it a few weeks ago) and you can pre-book your tickets here. Now Universal Studios have...

Pictures of baby ballet classes are adorable enough as it is. Add celebrity kids and you might just have to pinch your computer monitor! How cool is it that Katie Holmes, Nicole Richie and Isla Fisher all had their little ones in such a cultured activity this week? Suri, Harlow and Olive are tutu cute in their pink chiffon and tights. It's enough to make grandpa Lionel sing! And apparently they're hitting their pliès, tendus and arabesques so hard that they're too tuckered out to walk on their own. It's cool, though—moms make great pas de deux partners. They might be too young for Mary Murphy's hot tamale train, but we'll bet they have seats on the cute caboose.

Nicole Richie no longer leads a simple life — and that's just fine with her. In January, the former reality star entered the hectic world of motherhood when she and her boyfriend, Good Charlotte lead singer Joel Madden, welcomed a baby girl, Harlow. (Despite tabloid headlines to the contrary, Richie says she and Madden are together.) On the professional front, the 27-year-old Richie is attempting a bit of a career reinvention, designing a line of jewelry, reportedly working on an album and even returning to TV. On Oct. 20, she guest stars on NBC's espionage comedy Chuck (8 pm/Et) as a former high-school nemesis of Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski). We asked Richie about the surprisingly physical role. — Mary Murphy

Oscar-Winning Actor Red Buttons Dies at 87
Red Buttons, the stand-up comedian who gained fame -- and an Academy Award -- as a character actor in numerous films and television shows, died Thursday in Los Angeles of vascular disease; he was 87. Born Aaron Chwatt in New York City, Buttons began his comedy career very young, performing on street corners before being discovered by burlesque theater owners, who made him the youngest comedian on the comedy circuit. Playing in the Catskills and on Broadway before being drafted in 1943, Buttons made his film debut in 1944's Winged Victory, based on a play created by Moss Hart for the Air Force. Performing under the credit "Cpl. Red Buttons", Buttons recreated a part he originated on Broadway alongside a number of other budding stars, including Karl Malden, Judy Holliday and Lee J. Cobb. He returned to show business in 1946, performing mainly on Broadway before landing his own TV vehicle, The Red Buttons Show, which ran from 1952-1955. Numerous other comedic TV appearances followed before director Joshua Logan cast him in the 1957 Marlon Brando drama Sayonara as a solider in post-World War II Japan who embarks on a tragic romance with a Japanese woman, played by Miyoshi Umeki. The role won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (co-star Umeki won an Oscar also) and launched his prodigious acting career. Among his most notable films were The Longest Day, Harlow, They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (the latter two earned him Golden Globe nominations) and the cult favorite and commercial hit The Poseidon Adventure, in which he was one of five Oscar-winning cast members. Though his film career lost steam in the 70s, he continued to work non-stop in television, appearing on '70s favorites (The Love Boat, Fantasy Island), '80s hits (The Cosby Show, Knots Landing), and a variety of shows in the '90s, from sitcoms (Roseanne) to dramas (ER); Buttons recently earned an Emmy nomination in 2005 for a recent guest appearance on ER. He also continued his stand-up career, appearing in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, the Catskills and at numerious celebrity comedy roasts. Married and divorced twice early in his career, Buttons is survived by his third wife, Alicia, and their two children. --Mark Englehart, IMDb staff...
