Some of the characters names are references to people Harry Kerwin and William Kerwin had previously worked with. Captain Herschell is a reference to Herschell Gordon Lewis, Mr. Freeman is a reference to David F. Friedman (sometimes credited as Davis Freeman), and Elsie Kerwin may be a reference to Elsie Kerbin, as well as referencing the Kerwin's themselves.
The characters Mr. Profumo and Ms. Keeler are references to John Profumo and Christine Keeler, who were the two parties involved in the 'Profumo affair' scandal a few years before this film came out.
