The third episode Uchuu kara no okurimono (1966) was dubbed in English to sell the series overseas, but at the time more and more television series were being filmed in color. Ultra Q was filmed in black and white.
Was the most expensive television series in Japan at the time. Ultra Q would cost nearly three times as much as the average Japanese television show.
Eiji Tsuburaya originally wanted the show to be more mystery based and didn't want to focus on monsters. However the Tokyo Broadcasting Station demanded a new monster every episode due to the popularity of the ongoing "monster boom". Tsuburaya Productions would eventually create Operation: Mystery! (1968), which was more inline with what Tsuburaya wanted Ultra Q to be.
Various Toho movie monsters have been modified into new monsters for several episodes of this show. They include Godzilla (as "Gomess" in Gomesu o taose! (1966)), King Kong (as "Goro" in Gorou to Gorô (1966)), Manda (as "Mystic Dragon" in Sodateyo! Kame (1966)), Baragon (as "Pagos" in The Rainbow's Egg (1966)), Magma (as Todola in 206-bin Shômetsu-su (1966)), and the Giant Octopus from King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) (as "Sudar" in Nankai no ikari (1966)).
This series was filmed beforehand in one year (all through 1965) and first televised on 2 January 1966. At the time, this was the most expensive TV show in Japan.
