A 1989 action-platform Konami game sets its supernatural setting in 1476 Wallachia, with Count Dracula ravaging Europe with the aid of a freshly spawned army of monsters. When all efforts to thwart him fail, the people call for the legendary vampire hunter Trevor Belmont — the current wielder of the Vampire Killer whip — who becomes our playable character joined by sorceress Sypha Belnades, pirate Grant Danasty, and the vampire Alucard. This game, "Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse," later laid the foundation for the first season of Netflix's "Castlevania," and the four-season series went on to expand upon these legacy characters in ways that elevate the source material's dizzying, captivating lore. Although the "Castlevania" games are still beloved to this day, the Netflix series helped popularize the franchise's most memorable aspects, all the while wrapping up the lore in a blood-splattered spectacle that can both thrill and horrify.

After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.
Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

This Castlevania review contains spoilers.
When Netflix’s Castlevania animated series first released in 2017, it was nothing short of a miracle: at last fans had a video game adaptation that was not only worthy of its beloved source material but was also a hell of a lot of fun to watch in its own right, especially in its early, Dracula-focused seasons. Netflix got the formula very right back then and its sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, largely nails it too, even if its 8-episode first season sometimes drags in the middle.
Set in 1792, about 300 years after the adventures of Trevor Belmont, the events of Nocturne unfold during the chaos of the French Revolution, a very suitable backdrop for all the gruesome violence that ensues at the crack of a Belmont whip. Returning directors Sam and Adam Deats go for broke with action sequences that extract every last ounce of blood, guts,...

Once an upstart and now a company to contend with, Britain’s Indicator continues their series of Hammer Studio releases with Hammer Volume Six: Night Shadows, a purely generic subtitle fit for any horror film, Hammer or otherwise. What isn’t generic is Indicator’s winning formula—top notch image quality and boatloads of extra materials including documentaries, commentaries, image galleries—the works. The films in their latest set are already available stateside in more than adequate Blu ray versions—but Indicator’s work prevails on the sheer magnitude and quality of their content.

Have the classic films of Hammer been subjected to more reissues than The Beatles? Not by a long shot but it can feel that way to dedicated Hammer-heads. The relentless tide of upgrades and re-packagings both foreign and domestic, each with their own pleasures and pitfalls, could inspire loyal fans to lobby for their own version of the Consumer Protection Agency – Home Video Division. Here’s a look at what should have been the definitive collection – from 2016, Universal’s Hammer Horror 8 Film Collection.

Universal

Curious about all those Region B Hammer Blu-rays from overseas, the ones requiring a region-free player? As a public service, Savant has solicited an expert opinion (you'll have to take my word for that) of a film restoration/transfer specialist who is also an informed fan of the filmic output of the little horror studio at Bray. I know, real Hammer fans buy first and worry about quality later, but this little guide might be of help to the rest of us budget-conscious collectors.
A 'Guest' article Written by a trusted Savant correspondent.
(Note: I receive plenty of emails asking for advice about the quality of Region B Blu-rays, most of which I don't see. I have access to industry people qualified to compare and judge the discs, but they stay off the record, because their employers forbid them to go online with their opinions. With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?
Once upon a time there were a group of actors, known as the ‘screen boogiemen’ who created the horror film/monster movie genre (starting in Universal Studios and later in Hammer Studios.) They were specialists who understood the psychology and performance style of horror cinema and became legends in the industry. The first was silent film star Lon Chaney Sr. (Phantom of the Opera, London After Midnight, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Unholy Three, the Monster,...

The death of Richard Matheson on 22 June 2013 marked the end of an amazing career as a novelist and screenwriter. His most enduring legacy will always be as the author of I Am Legend, arguably one of the finest vampire novels ever written. Considered ‘the very peak of paranoid science fiction,’ Matheson’s groundbreaking debut novel is one of the few contemporary vampire stories that came close to the literary excellence of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
With plans of a sequel to the Will Smith misfire I Am Legend (2007) being seriously considered by filmmakers, there is only one thing that fans of Matheson’s outstanding post apocalyptic work are asking “when is there going to be a Proper film version of the book?”
Published in 1954, I Am Legend tells the terrifying tale of Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a mysterious airborne virus that has turned everyone, including his wife Virginia and best friend Ben Cortman,...

Musician Jesse Dayton may be best known to genre fans as “Captain Clegg,” the front man to the psychobilly band seen in Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, as he not only performed under the moniker in the film but also was the opening act on Zombie’s music tour that kicked off later that year as well.
Now Dayton is gearing up to show his fans out there another side of himself as the writer/director just wrapped production on his first feature film entitled Zombex, a zombie flick that explores the concept that maybe pharmaceutical companies could actually be dastardly enough to be responsible for creating a zombie apocalypse through the distribution of their medicinal products.
Starring Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Sid Haig (House of 1000 Corpses), David Christopher (The Sinner), Slayer lead singer Tom Araya, Emily Kaye...

“My name is Bond - James Bond". That classic introduction to the cinema’s greatest secret agent is as famous as “I am Dracula, I bid you welcome.” When the box office success of Dr No (1962) turned the unknown Sean Connery into a movie legend, Hammer was never far away from the franchise. With their own films running parallel to the Bond series, Hammer and Eon Productions often made use of the same talent.
Dr No also marked the debuts of Bernard Lee (the first of 11 films as M) and Lois Maxwell (the first of 14 as Miss Moneypenny). Lee had a brief turn as Tarmut in Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1973) and despite never starring in a Hammer horror, Maxwell turned up in their early fifties thrillers Lady in the Fog (1953) and Mantrap (1954).

Forget Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee! There was one actor who truly epitomised classic Hammer horror, and that was the irreplaceable Michael Ripper. With a whopping 23 films to his name, he was to Hammer what Desmond Llewellyn was to James Bond.
Michael Ripper was born in Portsmouth on 27 January 1913. His father Harold was a civil servant who ran a local amateur dramatic company and taught elocution and speech therapy, his mother Edith worked as a teacher. Ripper had a very unhappy Victorian childhood; his dominant father was very much a stern disciplinarian.
A pupil of Portsmouth Grammar School, which he hated, Ripper was more or less pushed into acting by his father, who entered him in various poetry competitions. A close family friend and regular visitor to their Southsea home was the brilliant comic actor Alastair Sim.

It's been over a week since Ottawa's closing night festivities, and my head is still reeling with the smorgasbord of animated treats I was privy to for the few short days I was there. Other than the features and some of the retrospectives (which I talked about in my previous Ottawa Animation Festival Wrap-Up Part One), I was able to catch the Canadian Short Film Showcase, one of the International showcases and the first of five short film competitions (sadly missing both the latest Priit Parn and Jonas Odell shorts).
The Canadian program kicked off smartly with Amy Lockhart's The Collagist, inspired by the creative process of her frequent collaborator, cartoonist/artist Marc Bell. With a single shot depicting two hands manipulating objects on a desk into a series of images - blobby potatoes, people, raindrops, mouths, eyes and text - this cut-out animation is a spirited ode to...

Ian Scoones was a leading British special effects designer who began his career working for Hammer horror films in the early 1960s. He was also frequently involved with the long-running Doctor Who series, and supervised the effects for the first season of the sci-fi series Blakes 7 in 1978.
Scoones was born in London on 1940, and studied painting, photography and set design at the Medway College of Art. Martin Benson was a dour-faced character actor who appeared in numerous film and television productions from the late 1940s. His notable genre roles include Dorkin, the circus ringmaster who aspires to hit the bigtime exploiting Gorgo, the giant prehistoric reptile, in the 1961 film of the same name. He was featured as American gangster Solo in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, who had a “pressing engagement” when he refused to take part in Goldfinger’s plot to rob Fort Knox. He was shot to death by henchman Oddjob, and crushed into a metal cube in a junkyard metal compactor along with his luxury car and gold bullion. He also appeared, under heavy prosthetics, as Jeltz, the poetry-spouting alien Vogon Captain, in the 1981 British television production of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Chicago – Not quite as poorly paced or simply awful as Rob Zombie’s first foray into the world of Michael Myers with his abyssmal remake of John Carpenter’s timeless “Halloween,” the sequel, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, still finds a way to continue the torture.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0
I respect what Zombie is attempting with these films. He’s taken what worked about easily his best work, “The Devil’s Rejects,” and tried to use the same approach to rebooting one of the most legendary horror franchises of all time. That film worked because of its stark, brutal realism, refusing to play into the cliches and showing the audience the effect of true violence.
Halloween 2 was released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 12th, 2010.

Halloween II (Unrated) Dvdsony Pictures Home ENTERTAINMENT2009/Unrated/119 minsList Price $28.96 – Available January 12, 2010Rob Zombie is one talented artist. He made great performance art with his music, a fusion of rock and heavy metal and though his debut feature 'House of 1000 Corpses' felt aimless and disjointed, he put real creative energy into his follow-up, 'The Devil's Rejects'. When it was announced that rock star turned director Zombie would reboot 'Halloween', the general consensus was that he would reinvigorate the story with his style and manner of storytelling. Though the remake had a promising beginning the end result felt like a retread of familiar material. It was successful enough to warrant a sequel, but again it feels as if the director's reach has exceeded his grasp. With the future of distributor The Weinstein Company now in jepardy, Halloween II arrives on blu-ray through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

It was announced a few days ago that Rob Zombie's new album Hellbilly Deluxe 2 was being delayed past its scheduled release date of November 17th due to some issues he was having with the Geffen label he's been with for the past 18 years. And today we got the word those problems were so irreparable that Zombie has signed a new worldwide deal with leading rock label Roadrunner Records through its Loud & Proud imprint.
As Billboard explained it, Zombie felt "the basic structure of releasing a record" was not adequately in place for the project.
"Basically the label (Geffen) wasn't really in a position to promote it or deal with it," Zombie explained. "It was basically everything, from getting advance copies to the press to...There wasn't even time to make a video (for the first single, 'What?', which you can hear below), and we were leaving for the tour.

The first-ever Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors has officially taken over the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, becoming The Place you want to spend your Halloween! Its 1:31am Vegas time as I type this and the party is continuing downstairs as Halloween has officially arrived in the city of Sin.
Opening night was a blast here, packed with film screenings, celebrity guests (including some unannounced surprises), horror, freaks, and rock. And to top it off, we're broadcasting the demonic debauchery Live!
Check out this clip from last night's Live webcast featuring John Kassir doing a little bit of The Crypt Keeper!
As the final screening of the night comes to a close with Black Devil Doll wrapping up in the Brenden Theatres, we're already prepping for the show floor to re-open at 10am. Tickets will be available at the door for only $20 beginning at 8:30am, and here's what horrors lie in-store for Halloween.
