Inspired by North by Northwest (1959). Director Paul Verhoeven: It was an attempt to film in a classic American style. With framed images that remain taut, while in Eén hagedis teveel (1960) or Nothing Special (1961) the camera moved continuously.
Scenarist Jan van Mastrigt wanted to situate the story next to a busy highway. He forgot to mention this in his synopsis. After handing in the script he immediately went on a vacation. In the film the story erroneously ended up along a quiet provincial road.
