Despite its openly gay theme, the movie had no problem with the Spanish censorship committee.
Both visually and in regard to the soundtrack, 'Diferente' is a musical clearly influenced by 'West Side Story' (film released just a year before).
Alfredo's character is vaguely reminiscent of the James Dean figure from 'Rebel Without a Cause' (1955).
