According to Marie Windsor, an executive from Lippert Pictures arrived on the set and announced that the film had run out of money.The production team tore several pages out of the script, thus eliminating certain scenes from the finished film.
John Ireland's wife, Joanne Dru, was tested for the role of Celie Donlin, which ultimately was played by Marie Windsor.
This film is loosely based on an actual incident. A patrol was sent to find Custer and deliver a warning message, but this happened in 1868, eight years before the ill-fated Little Bighorn battle.
Writer Harold Shumate was originally slated to direct the film but screenwriter Charles Marquis Warren made his directing debut in this movie.
Castmates Lloyd Bridges and Hugh O'Brian had the preceding year co-starred in the pioneering science fiction classic Rocketship X-M (1950). Both films had Murray Lerner as executive producer (although uncredited on this film), and each was presented by Robert L. Lippert.
