Every once in a while, a movie comes around that’s so viscerally different from what came before it that the fabric of cinema is permanently altered. To say that future filmmakers were “influenced” by it almost feels like an understatement, as its legacy has less to do with inspiring specific aesthetic innovations than reconceptualizing the way we think about moving images.
It’s somewhat ironic that a movie titled “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” went on to become such a film. Tobe Hooper’s 1974 slasher masterpiece embraced its lowbrow status with its matter-of-fact title and unapologetic gore, likely seen by many as a cheap attempt to ride shock value into a quick box office gold mine. But as any horror lover will be quick to tell you, that could not be further from the truth. While the film still holds up as a fantastic standalone slasher flick — this writer would...

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

Any Universal Studios tourist worth their weight in candy rock-salt knows Stage 12 — but the historic filming location can be seen like never before at Halloween Horror Nights 2024.
An original haunted house with an all-female cast, “Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines” can be found inside the famous building on the studio’s sprawling California backlot. Built in 1929, Stage 12 has been around for almost a century and is still among the most culturally significant film stages in the world.
“I’ve talked about it a lot, but I don’t think you can talk about it enough,” the event’s creative director John Murdy told IndieWire during opening night. “The fact that we’re doing a house this year on the very soundstage where ‘Frankenstein’ was filmed in 1931, where ‘Dracula’ was filmed in 1931, where ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ was filmed in 1935, et cetera. That’s just so cool and something that could only happen at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Who can forget Universal’s ill-fated Dark Universe that failed right out of the gate with “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise, despite having announced an entire cast to play Universal monster characters like Bride Of Frankenstein, Creature From The Black Lagoon and more. Thankfully, Blumhouse, the independent horror studio set up at Universal, took over the Monsterverse and successfully relaunched it with the terrific horror thriller, “The Invisible Man.

Alien is one of the most beloved classic horror movies and no classic comes out of thin air. The film was the culmination of two horror trends from the 1970s. One of these trends was retro at the time but the other was very modern.
‘Alien’ was a response to horror films from the 1950s
Science fiction and horror have been soulmates since Mary Shelley published Frankenstein in 1818. While science fiction can help us understand how new technologies could change the world, horror can show us what happens when those technologies go wrong — whether they be nuclear energy, androids, or space travel. The dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II caused lots of anxiety over new innovations, paving the way for a boom in science fiction horror films during the 1950s.
Most of these films were creature features, such as Robot Monster, Creature from the Black Lagoon,...

Acclaimed horror director James Wan is reportedly in discussions to helm a remake of the 1954 film “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” If finalized, the project would mark Universal Pictures’ newest effort to revive its iconic monster franchises for modern audiences.
The original movie, directed by Jack Arnold, tells the story of scientists who discover an ancient aquatic humanoid in the Amazon River. Featuring groundbreaking 3D effects and practical creature costumes, “Creature from the Black Lagoon” is considered foundational to the horror genre.
Wan, known for hits like “Saw,” “The Conjuring,” and “Insidious,” brings considerable experience directing horror films. However, faithfully adapting the iconic Gill-man monster poses challenges. The original practical effects and performances by Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning made the Gill-man viscerally terrifying. Some worry a remake may over-rely on computer-generated imagery (CGI), harming its tactile essence.
One example the remake could follow is 2017’s “The Shape of Water,...

There are classic films, then there are all-time classics that are damn near untouchable. Such is the case with Universal's "Creature from the Black Lagoon." First released in 1954, director Jack Arnold's heralded creature feature is among the most acclaimed of the Universal Monsters classics, right up there with "Bride of Frankenstein." While the film is close to untouchable, a modern horror master is going to take a crack at it anyway.
We recently learned that James Wan is developing a "Creature from the Black Lagoon" remake that he intends to direct. This would be his return to horror following the release of last year's "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." More than that, one could argue it's the most bold creative risk Wan has taken in his wildly successful career. It's hard to picture anyone better suited to the job than Wan. James Wan is finally set to return to his horror roots with his upcoming movie, which will be the remake of 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon, often seen as one of Universal’s last great monster flicks. The creator of the Conjuring series, who previously helmed Dceu’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is set to take a more grounded approach with the remake.
Moreover, it appears the director might bring back concepts from his scrapped Dceu feature, which was set to hit the theatres before the brand’s swansong.

Originally, James Wan was set to helm an Aquaman spin-off, titled The Trench, which was slated for a 2019 release. While much is not known about the film, The Conjuring filmmaker later revealed it was supposed to be a Black Manta film.

Acclaimed director James Wan is in early discussions to helm a remake of the 1954 horror classic “Creature from the Black Lagoon.” Universal Pictures is looking to bring back one of its most iconic monsters with a modern retelling. Wan, known for successful horror franchises like “Saw” and “The Conjuring,” would bring experience in both scaring audiences and big box office hits.
The project has been in development on and off for decades. Most recently, Guillermo del Toro had been attached to direct a reboot that never came to be. Off the top, I don't know if I am at odds with this. I should be. I have treasured memories tied to viewings of the 1954 classic monster movie Creature From The Black Lagoon. Specifically, watching the 3D version of the film, on print (I don't recall what size) in the chapel at college back when our lord and master Todd and I went to school together and we'd bring David (Canfield) up from Chicago to give lectures on cinema. Isn't that what they call a core memory? So news from THR that horror aficienado James Wan is in talks to direct a remake of Jack Arnold's classic Universal Monster movie should drive me insane. But I'm old, and tired, and I think there...

After merging his Atomic Monster film and TV production company with Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions earlier this year, James Wan looks to have finally set his next movie to direct, a remake of the 1954 monster horror film Creature From the Black Lagoon. More on this upcoming movie and Wan's potential involvement below.
Many people might recognize Wan as the creator of the highly successful The Conjuring Universe. He's also the co-creator of other successful horror franchises, such as the Saw franchise and the Insidious film series. But while he's been signed on as producer or executive producer on recent projects, he hasn't sat in the director's chair since 2023's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, the Invisible Man – Universal has brought them all back to the screen in the decades since their glory days in the 1930s and ’40s. But one classic Universal monster who hasn’t had a new movie since the 1950s is the Creature from the Black Lagoon, a.k.a. the Gill Man. The closest we’ve gotten is the unofficial version of the creature that was seen in the 1987 classic The Monster Squad. But now Deadline reports that genre regular James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster are developing “a grounded modernized retelling” of Creature from the Black Lagoon that will lean into “visceral horror while paying respect to the original classic.”

Will horror B-movie audiences finally get the remake they’ve been waiting on for decades? Universal is again looking to remake the 1954 monster movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” and this time they’re looking to the “Aquaman” director James Wan — someone who knows a thing or two about underwater battles and gill-men — to develop his own modern take, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Wan may direct too and is in early talks to tack on that responsibility. If he does, it would be his first project behind the director’s chair since merging his production company Atomic Monster with Blumhouse Productions.
Wan’s take, according to the individual, will be a grounded, modernized retelling, leaning into “visceral horror,” but it will still pay respect to the original. No screenwriter or talent is attached just yet. Atomic Monster will produce the film, with Wan as a producer.

“Aquaman” director James Wan is returning to the sea for his next feature film. He’s developing a remake of “Creature From the Black Lagoon” and is in early talks to direct for Universal Pictures.
The project is described as a “grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.” It’s been 70 years since the “Creature From the Black Lagoon” first graced the big screen in the 1954 adaptation directed by Jack Arnold and starring Richard Carlson and Julia Adams. Over the years, several directors including Guillermo del Toro have tried to reboot the black-and-white monster movie about a group of scientists who encounter a prehistoric monster in the Amazonian waters, but none have gotten off the ground.

James Wan is developing a new “Creature From the Black Lagoon” movie at Universal and is in early talks to direct the project, TheWrap has learned.
The remake is currently seeking a writer to work with Wan. The filmmaker is developing a grounded, modernized retelling of the original classic that will lean into visceral horror.
The project could be Wan’s first movie as director since his company Atomic Monster merged with Blumhouse last year.
Atomic Monster will produce the film, with Michael Clear and Judson Scott as executive producers and Wan producing. Executive vice president of Production Development Jay Polidoro will oversee for Universal.
The original 1954 “Creature From the Black Lagoon” centered on a team of scientists that traveled to the Amazon to investigate a fossil. They discover a hidden lagoon where a prehistoric fish-man creature still lives. Complications ensue when the creature becomes interested in the female scientist.

While frequent collaborator Leigh Whannell works on bringing The Wolf Man back to life, we’ve learned via Deadline today that James Wan is in early talks to direct a new take on horror classic Creature from the Black Lagoon for Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures!
Deadline notes in today’s report, “James Wan is developing a grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.”
Unlike fellow Universal Monsters classics including Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon hasn’t been the subject of countless remakes over the years, which makes it ripe for revival here in the present day. Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winner The Shape of Water was heavily influenced by the classic tale, though not an official adaptation.

Sci-fi legend Jack Arnold directed a majority of "Gilligan's Island," with plenty of prolific names like John Rich, Leslie Goodwins, and even "Superman" director Richard Donner all steering multiple episodes.
The origin of "Gilligan's Island" is a fascinating story already, with creator Sherwood Schwartz allegedly singing the theme song to a gas station attendant to see if the show sounded like something the average person would watch, but just as interesting is how groundbreaking the show was behind the camera.
Namely, by inviting decorated actress and history-making director Ida Lupino to helm a few episodes.
Although Rod Amateau is credited as directing the pilot for the series, CBS comedy show supervisor Sol Saks was quoted as claiming in William Donati's "Ida Lupino: A Biography," that Lupino had been brought in to help shape a struggling show. "It was 'Gilligan's Island,'" Saks said. "It wasn't even on the air yet.

This is a remake of the 1954 classic which tackled a strange prehistoric beast lurking in the depths of the Amazonian jungle and the group of scientists who try to capture the animal to bring it back to civilization for study.’
James Wan is considered to be one of the premier names in horror, having found success in the genre on multiple occasions and in many different forms, including Saw, The Conjuring and Insidious. Whether it’s torture porn,...

For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.
That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.
With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!

By the 1950s, the Universal Monsters had become a punchline with most of them ending their onscreen careers meeting Abbott and Costello. Many of them had become victims of their own success, becoming so iconic that they had lost any ability to frighten anybody. Creatures from outer space, radioactive monsters, and giant bugs had taken over the throne as horror’s reigning attractions and anything that deviated from these felt passé and played out. Universal itself supplied plenty of its own creations into this theatrical landscape and relegated its classic monsters to the small screen. Into this environment came something new from the studio that all but created the modern horror film when Universal unleashed Creature from the Black Lagoon into the world.

Update: Daniel Richtman has learned that there’s not only a Mummy prequel in the works at Universal, but there are two other Mummy projects in the works as well. He writes, “There are no less than Three Mummy projects in development at Universal, one is a direct sequel to the Fraser films.” So fans might get to see Brendan Fraser make his long-awaited return to the role of Rick O’Connell after all!

Alien didn’t just spring fully formed out of the heads of director Ridley Scott and writers Dan O’Bannon, Ronald Shusett, Walter Hill, and David Giler. Its combination of “monster on the loose” and “haunted house in space” scenario was perhaps the ultimate distillation of a long line of sci-fi and horror pictures that had come before it, from quick B-movie cheapies to some of the genre’s most elegant offerings. What Alien did under the visionary hand of its director, however, was meld all those influences together in a way that transcended the schlockier elements of the film’s influences and elevated the more artistic and meaningful ones. The result wasn’t just a monster movie, but a psychosexual nightmare with Lovecraftian overtones and a sense of existential dread.

The Wolf Man remains one of the horror genre's most iconic movie monsters and in 2017, there were plans for him to take centre stage in Universal's ill-fated "Dark Universe."
The idea of an McU-inspired shared world featuring these creatures crumbled when The Mummy bombed, leaving the studio with no other choice than to part ways with Hollywood heavyweights like Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, and Javier Bardem.
There's been some chatter about Universal attempting to revive its Dark Universe, but filmmaker Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man won't be part of them.
"As an outsider, I would say that The Mummy's Dark Universe, in my humble opinion, felt like it was reactive to what was going on with all the superhero stuff - the MCU and DC universe," producer Ken Kao tells Screen Rant (via FearHQ.com). "And we know there's been a lot of talk about what...

It’s a sad day, Fiends. But we knew this time would come. Although we still have 1 more episode of the Graveyard Smash podcast series to go, this officially marks the end of our deep dive (wink-wink) into the Universal Classic Monsters. Closing out our look back at the monsters that made us, we’ve set our course and navigated straight into the heart of the Amazon to explore and analyze the Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954).
Join us as we mine the depth of this unique aquatic monster with one foot in the past and one foot in the future of horror. It’s a love story and a cautionary tale of how humans ruin everything. Not to mention those absolutely stunning underwater sequences!
Creature From The Black Lagoon is a bit of an anomaly in the Universal Monster canon, but can you imagine a world without the Gill-Man?...

Debating the horror genre’s artistic value is tacky. Measuring its success by the box office can be just as boring. But I’d bet you a head-start in a chase sequence that those metrics still steer how Hollywood talks about its longest-surviving obsession at many prestige events.

1954's "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" was the last gasp of Universal Pictures' black-and-white horror heyday. Pivoting away from literary adaptations towards something more resembling contemporary man-in-suit monster movies, "Black Lagoon" introduced one last staple of the Universal Monster line-up: The Gill-man. A missing link in the evolutionary chain, the amphibian man has the same mix of terror and lovelorn pathos as his monstrous brethren.
It's not quite the pop-culture staple that "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" are, but "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" has been reimagined many times (most famously in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture-winning oddball romance "The Shape of Water" — it was almost black-and-white like "Black Lagoon" too). Now a new comic book starring the Gill-Man comes forth from Skybound Entertainment, boasting a title that belongs to a forgotten Universal Horror picture: "The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!"
Skybound isn't just revitalizing "The Transformers" and "G.I. Joe.

Mardi Gras is long over, and Halloween is still months away. But over the next four days in New Orleans, Louisiana, the Overlook Film Festival will celebrate the strange and unusual with a salute to horror that couldn’t be timelier.
“As we are talking, we have just seen two brand-new horror releases — ‘Immaculate’ and ‘Late Night with the Devil’ — have the highest openings for those distributors in their histories,” festival co-director Landon Zakheim told IndieWire. [The nun nightmare, starring Sydney Sweeney, earned $5.3 million for Neon, while IFC’s supernatural talkshow took home $2.8 million, in their respective opening weekends.]
“On top of that, we’ve got the new ‘Godzilla,’ which was made by filmmakers who are alums of many festivals, including ours. And Disney is shepherding in an ‘Omen’ franchise film from a festival circuit filmmaker as well,” he said. “That’s all just if you look at the last couple of weeks.
