The movie is based on a play by the classic Japanese author Monzaemon Chikamatsu (1653-1725). The original title "Chikamatsu monogatari" means "A Tale From Chikamatsu".
Kagawa Kyoko had to adopt and learn Kansai accent in one week. Actress Naniwa Chieko would coach her.
Kagawa Kyoko described her participation in this film as her most important as, she claims, it taught her the basis of acting.
The film adheres to many covenants of Bunraku theatre.
Director Mizoguchi changed the main actress' role at the last minute. Kagawa Kyoko was to play the role of Otama and Minamida Yoko was to play Osan at first.
