After months competing rumours, a frontrunner has reportedly emerged for director David Fincher’s next film: crime western, Bitterroot.
Whilst the past week may have seen a furious splurge of rumours regarding the nature of Christopher Nolan’s secretive next project, David Fincher is no slouch at this game either. The American filmmaker has kept us guessing for months already as to what direction Fincher’s follow-up to last year’s The Killer will take. A quick search within the Film Stories website shows four different rumoured projects since April, including a Squid Game remake, a Western and two Hitchcock remakes, Rope and Strangers On A Train.
However, it looks like an end to the ongoing speculation may finally be in sight. A new posting at Production List states that Bitterroot, Fincher’s western project, is set to shoot in January of next year. World Of Reel also seems to confirm this,...

Bubble, boil, steam, and burn, it’s time to watch those film reels turn. That’s right, it’s October, which means it’s almost Halloween, but the minute the clock struck midnight on the 1st, we here at IndieWire were already decked in black and frightening our office mates at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. While carving pumpkins, eating candy, and donning elaborate costumes may be how most ring in this special time of year, we believe there’s no better celebration of spooky season than entering a dark theater and sharing a few collective screams with strangers.
This month, repertory theaters in New York and Los Angeles have plenty of offerings to get those lungs expanding and heart beating. From black-and-white classics like Don Siegel’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956) to modern monster favorites such as “The Mummy” (1999) starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, don’t miss...

A rumor had been going around that Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope was being developed into a remake. And World of Reel is now confirming that the project is indeed happening and the film may be securing David Fincher to direct. Fincher was recently trying to develop a remake of another Alfred Hitchcock classic, Strangers on a Train, which was said to be eyeing Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck to star. However, now it seems as though Fincher is instead opting to remake Rope as, according to Netflix’s Kasey Moore, the film is moving forward. Denzel Washington and/or Charlize Theron may be up for roles in the film.
The plot synopsis for the Alfred Hitchcock original reads,
“Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip Morgan (Farley Granger) and Brandon Shaw (John Dall) strangle a mutual friend to death with a piece of rope, purely as a Nietzsche-inspired philosophical exercise.

A new David FIncher rumour: he’s reportedly set to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, with Charlize Theron lined up for a starring role.
Another week, another David Fincher rumour. Given how many stories we’ve heard of late regarding Fincher’s next project for Netflix, we’re beginning to wonder if the Fight Club filmmaker is orchestrating a disinformation campaign worthy of Project Mayhem, the anarchist movement from his 1999 masterpiece.
Recent weeks have seen stories emerge that suggested Fincher would be remaking Squid Game, the hit South Korean Netflix show as an English language film. Just a few days ago, a story appeared that claimed he would be making a western next titled Bitteroot, modelled after the style of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 classic, Unforgiven. Oh, and it doesn’t seem like that long ago since reports suggested that his next film would be a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train.

Reports swirl regarding David Fincher’s next film for Netflix, with a third project – a Western titled Bitterroot – potentially his next film.
Just last week we covered the widely reported story that David Fincher’s next project was set to be an English language remake of the hit South Korean TV show, Squid Game. The story was widely reported of course because this is David Fincher, one of the most admired directors of our era and as such, there’s plenty of interest in whatever project he chooses to attach himself to next.
The Squid Game remake reports came on the heels of an earlier story that emerged in April, claiming that Fincher’s next film could be a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train. The hit dystopian series Squid Game is getting an English-language film remake – and it’s reportedly David Fincher’s next project for Netflix.
What’s director David Fincher’s next film? According to a new report, it’s an English-language remake of Squid Game, the dystopian TV series that was a huge hit for Netflix in 2023.
There have been reports of a film version of the South Korean series for a while, and according to World Of Reel, David Fincher has been quietly developing his take on it since 2021. What’s a little surprising is the suggestion that Squid Game has taken priority over all the other projects Fincher has in the works, including a Chinatown prequel series, written by Robert Towne shortly before he died, and the director’s long-mooted remake of Strangers On A Train.
Fincher has enjoyed a longstanding partnership with Netflix, though (much to the chagrin...

Während die 4K-Blu-ray-Veröffentlichung zum 50. What's Daniel Day Lewis' best film? "Gangs of New York," perhaps? What about his Oscar-winning performance as the 16th President of the United States in "Lincoln?" Surely his efforts there should put Steven Spielberg's historical drama in the running for Lewis' finest work. Well, it's neither of these. Daniel Day Lewis' best film is, in fact, 1985's "A Room With a View," — at least according to Rotten Tomatoes.
The website that determined there to be only two perfect horror movies can also be consulted for its rankings of individual actors' filmographies. When you think of the very best Alfred Hitchcock movies, you might think of, say, "Psycho" or "Vertigo." You might consider "The Birds" — controversial though it may be — as the director's finest moment, or "Rear Window" might spring to mind. But while these are all excellent examples of Hitch's undeniable directing talent, there's an impressive array of underrated Hitchcock movies worth watching.
Take "Strangers on a Train" for example. This 1951 thriller stars Farley Granger as Guy Haines and Robert Walker as Bruno Antony, who are, believe it or not, two strangers who meet on a train. The thing about Bruno, however, is that he's also a psychopath, and suggests to Guy that they "swap murders" so as to do away with Guy's estranged wife and Bruno's overbearing father. From Bruno's perspective, because both men will essentially be killing strangers, no one will suspect either of them. When Guy laughs off this nefarious plot,...

There’s a story Alfred Hitchcock always liked to tell about how, when he was five years old, his father dropped him off at the local police station near his home in East London. William Hitchcock left a note for the coppers explaining that his son had been misbehaving. A policeman locked young Alfred in a cell for a few minutes and explained, “This is what we do to naughty boys.”
When Hitchcock recounted that story to Dick Cavett he was in his 70s, but the incident continued to leave a profound mark on the director. He said he was still “terrified of the police” because of that and drew a connection from that to the feelings of guilt and wrong-men-on-the-run paranoia that seeps into so many of his films.
The funny thing is, though, father characters are almost entirely absent from Hitchcock’s work. There are a few: Cedric Hardwicke...

Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.
These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

David Fincher’s next film for Netflix is his long, long cherished remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train. More here.
Following the release of The Killer on Netflix late last year, David Fincher signed a new deal with the streaming platform which is believed to tie him exclusively to the company for another three years.
While the boss of Cannes (and anybody else who yearns to see Fincher’s work back on the big screen) expressed some dismay that the American filmmaker’s next few projects would go straight to the small screen, at least Fincher’s Netflix deal has seen him become more prolific of late.
In the last three years, Fincher has created Mank and The Killer for Netflix, a veritable landslide of films when you consider that prior to this flurry of films, it took Fincher almost a decade to release two films, those...

After previously covering The Old Dark House and Bride of Frankenstein, we wrapped the month up with another James Whale classic, The Invisible Man (1933).
In the film, Jack Griffin (Claude Rains) is an egomaniac with plans to sell his invisibility formula for a fortune, but first he has to “find a way back” from invisibility with the help of scientist/love interest, Dr. Kemp (William Harrigan). Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle seems to have spilt audiences and critics all over the world. From being branded as over-the-top fun, to the worst film of the year. While it’s neither of them, at times it can be argued that it’s fallen into each argument.
Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, an author who has written a series of best-selling spy novels, all of which focus on the heroic action hero, Argylle. We first see agent Argylle in action, played by Henry Cavill, who has, unfortunately, been given the worst haircut ever put to screen. Sporting his dreadful haircut he’s on a mission, one that is filled with over-the-top dialogue and action, and some of the worst CGI you’re likely to see,...

If you’ve ever wanted a long-belated sequel to Throw Momma From the Train, Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal have you covered.
While speaking with GQ, Danny DeVito was asked if there was anything in his career he wanted to revisit. Surprisingly, DeVito mentioned that he’s been looking at reuniting with Billy Crystal for a Throw Momma From the Train sequel titled, you guessed it, Throw Papa From the Train. “Billy [Crystal] and I want to work together again,” DeVito said. “We were looking at possibly doing Throw Papa From the Train.” Crystal’s representative confirmed the news to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s true,” the rep said. “They’re still working on it.“
Throw Momma From the Train starred Billy Crystal as Larry, an author with a cruel ex-wife, Margaret (Kate Mulgrew), who teaches a writing workshop where Owen (Danny DeVito), one of his students, is fed up with his...

In this weird world of spinoffs and sequels, you can never say never to the possibility of a legacy sequel, no matter how unlikely it seems. Some of them are ill-advised, but sometimes we get the chance to return to some great creative ground that just didn't get the chance for a sequel during its era for whatever reason. Movies from the 1980s and 1990s that have found cult status have the potential to find an even bigger audience with a legacy sequel, and as long as the original stars are interested, it can happen! That seems to be the case for "Throw Momma From the Train," the 1987 dark comedy directed by Danny DeVito and starring DeVito and Billy Crystal. The movie follows an author named Larry (Crystal) and one of his writing students, Owen (DeVito), after they become entangled in a murder plot directly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train.

Guillermo del Toro doesn’t hold back about his love for his favorite movies. If you’ve spent any time on his Twitter feed over the years, you’ve likely seen him praise Stanley Donen’s use of the color red throughout the late director’s body of work, and hail everything from William Wellman’s 1931 film “Other Men’s Women” to David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” from 2022. The man has wide-ranging taste, and a deep awareness of cinematic history that’s informed his own films.

"Saltburn" is a different kind of monster movie.
Playing like a gothic romance (in the traditional sense of the word) retold through the lens of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley stories, it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies. In a good way -- this is a film that revels proudly in its darkness. Because writer/director Emerald Fennell, who proved adept at pushing the right buttons with the similarly cruel "Promising Young Woman," knows that monsters can be seductive, that we can and will have sympathy for the devil, and that we'll follow an especially clever creature to the ends of the earth if they prove interesting enough.
And Oliver Quick, played by Barry Keoghan with the kind of shocking bravery that has catapulted him to the top of the "most interesting actors in the world" list over the past few years, is a special kind of monster.

While Hollywood still has a long way to go in supporting queer stories and storytellers, we’re living in a relative golden age of LGBTQ cinema compared to what has come before. Netflix has not always chosen to support the LGBTQ community in their business decisions, but the streamer has played a major role in increasing the visibility of queer characters and storylines in both film and TV, and in supporting queer creators in telling stories.
As we celebrate Pride month and beyond, let’s take a look at some of the best LGBTQ movies Netflix currently has on offer. If you’re looking for a queer film to watch—satirically funny or devastatingly earnest, heart-stoppingly romantic or casually queer—try one of the many excellent and diverse options below.

I'm not the biggest fan of Netflix. I don't want to get into a huge rant about it, but my biggest issue is that here in the Czech Republic, it takes the service forever to upload any new movies. Then, when something fresh finally drops, it's usually something starring Ryan Reynolds, Adam Sandler, or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I may be exaggerating, but that's what it feels like; too many mediocre Netflix originals and not much in the way of variety beyond the most mainstream of offerings.
To give Netflix its due, it does throw up some surprises from time to time. Given how subtitle-adverse many viewers in English-speaking countries can be, they took a bit of a chance on "Squid Game," but it went on to become a phenomenon and further advanced the cause of the booming Korean entertainment industry. Then there was "Cobra Kai," which sounded a lot...

The Birds officially turns 60 years old in 2023 from its release date on March 28, 1963. It’s an excellent film that blends dramatic stakes with Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful use of suspense, but does it belong in his top five most significant movies? It all depends on how we define that, which is why his longtime fans are only partially right that The Birds is a top-five Hitchcock film.

Alfred Hitchcock is one of the most important and influential directors in cinema history, and anyone aspiring to become a filmmaker should do themselves a favor and study his body of work. This one man pioneered numerous filmmaking techniques still used today, shot some of the industry's most famous scenes, elevated the thriller genre to new heights, and achieved so much more than can be crammed into this paragraph. In fact, there's an argument to be made that Hitchcock's genius is so great that simply watching his movies is a fine substitute for enrolling in an expensive film school.
With a career dating all the way back to 1925's "The Pleasure Garden", it's no wonder why Hitchcock has so many classic films to his credit. "Psycho," "Vertigo," "North by Northwest," "The Birds," "Rear Window" –- it's hard to believe that all of these iconic, diverse films and others came from the same mind.

The simple yet effective title “Of an Age” plays a few tricks with its double entendre; the peppy romance about a young queer man’s first brush with love captures a certain glowing youthful nostalgia. But it’s also a story split across two decades, essentially bifurcated in two recent but now solidly bygone eras. The film opens in 1999, though the boxy cars harken even further back, and ends in 2010, performing some impressive movie magic to make the actors look age-appropriate. That the entire thing is set in Melbourne, Australia, adds another layer of distance to the whole affair, coating it in a kind of dewy faraway melodrama.
While “Of an Age” leans a little heavily toward sentimentality at times, a sharp wit and a few wild shifts in tone keep things afloat. It’s As writer/director on his second feature, the Macedonian-born, Austalian-raised filmmaker Goran Stolevski firmly plants...

Exclusive: Oscar winner Helen Mirren is set to star as celebrated author Patricia Highsmith in new movie Switzerland, whose plot will mirror one of the Tom Ripley novels for which the American novelist was most famous.
Filmmaker and celebrated music video director Anton Corbijn, whose credits include Control, A Most Wanted Man and The American, is aboard to direct the movie, which FilmNation will be launching for world sales at next week’s EFM.
In Switzerland, Highsmith’s late life solitude in the Swiss Alps is interrupted by Edward, a young literary agent who is sent by the writer’s relentless publishing company to convince her to pen one last novel in her wildly popular Ripley series (which includes the classic The Talented Mr Ripley). Highsmith uses her famously macabre imagination to scare Edward away, but before they know it a collaboration ensues, leaving the world they’ve constructed indistinguishable from their own.

Actor Liam Neeson is set to portray the iconic character Philip Marlowe in the upcoming film, Marlowe. But he is hardly the first. Neeson has become known in recent decades for his leading roles in action movies like The Grey and Taken.
In Marlowe, he’ll go noir as he attempts to fill the shoes of one of the most storied private eyes in history: a character who’s been played by some of the biggest actors in Hollywood history.

Set in Bay Cities, California, in the ’50s, Marlowe follows a “tough as nails private detective” as he investigates the disappearance of a beautiful heiress’ ex-lover. But the more he digs into the case, the more he realizes the spider’s web has spun far larger than he originally thought.

One obvious sign that Halloween is fast approaching: More horror flicks being streamed. And that’s clearly the case right now, with a handful of scary movies, including Hulu’s “Hellraiser,” grabbing fans’ attention, according to Whip Media’s latest movie ranker — which reflects data from TV time, a TV and movie app that tracks viewer interest from 22 million global registered users.
For the second straight week, Disney+ had the two most streamed movies in the U.S. “Hocus Pocus 2,” which topped the Whip Media chart last week dropped to second place last weekend. Taking its No. 1 spot was “Werewolf by Night,” the new fantasy-horror special from Marvel that was released on Oct. 7.

“Do Revenge” was in jeopardy of losing one or both of its stars when a twist of fate allowed director Jennifer Kaitlyn Robinson to cast her dream performers. In fact, she was able to move production to Atlanta a month before filming began in order to keep Maya Hawke, who was filming “Stranger Things” Season 4 at the time, as antagonist Eleanor in the film.
In the Netflix teen dark comedy, Hawke costars as Eleanor alongside Camila Mendes, who plays the other half of the deceitful duo as Drea Torres, the fallen “it” girl.
“We cast the movie in 2020. Cami and Maya both signed on, and then ‘Stranger Things’ pushed, which means that in our window where we were making the movie we technically lost Maya,” Robinson said in a recent zoom interview with TheWrap. “If we had waited for Maya to complete ‘Stranger Things,’ we would have lost Cami and...

The phrase "Do Revenge" may not be grammatically correct, but when a movie is this entertaining, who cares? The new Netflix film not only revives the teen revenge thriller but gives it a pastel-themed makeover, updating the familiar tropes to fit in with Gen Z sensibilities. Following two teenage girls hellbent on ruining the lives of their enemies, the film acts as a campy twist on the Hitchcock thriller "Strangers on a Train," but also takes inspiration from the classic teen movies of the '80s, '90s, and '00s. The result is wild, hilarious, and much more clever than you'll realize at first glance.
The film from writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Celeste Ballard is packed with easter eggs that go far beyond the script. Visual references include "Clueless," "Mean Girls," "Scream" and so many more — and then there's the matter of casting. "Do Revenge" is stacked...

So you laughed, cringed, gasped, and cheered over Do Revenge, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s delightfully dark retelling of Strangers on a Train for the clout-obsessed Gen Z set, and now you want to do a rewatch? Before you press restart on Netflix, chase that thrill with the teen drama forebears that Robinson spoofed, riffed on, and littered the movie with reverent Easter eggs from the ‘80s, ‘90s, and ‘00s.
Plus, if this is your first introduction to Robinson, you’re in luck—we’ve got your guide to where else to find her incisive, irreverent work, from a feminist vigilante TV series to a movie less about “fucked-up soulmates” and more about your ride-or-die best friends in adulthood.
Heathers (1988)
A dark satirical foil for the John Hughes teen movies of the same era, this iconic 1988 black comedy no doubt contributed to the blueprint of Do Revenge: a brutal clique of social-climbing girls,...
