Andrew's job strains his relationship with Clara. Tasked to entertain partying client, Andrew faces Clara's wrath despite good intentions. Battincourt plots to reunite them through makeovers and a costume party involving twin Mercedes.

The marriage of college sweethearts Andrew and Clara is going stale after 5 years. Andrew is a hard worker at the firm, but it seems that all he does is work. When Mr. Battincourt from London must be entertained, Andrew gets stuck entertaining him--and Battincourt likes to party. Andrew is only doing his job, but Clara thinks differently and tosses him out. Andrew tries to reason with Clara, but Mother is against him. So Battincourt tries to get them back together by giving Clara the beauty treatment and having a costume party. Married couple Andrew Hinklin and Clara Hinklin née Fields, who were college sweethearts and are now approaching their fifth anniversary, are well matched: both are unexciting and unmotivated, only wanting to carve out a plain, simple, uninteresting life for themselves. Their marriage is not helped by Clara's opinionated mother living with them in their small one-bedroom apartment. However, Clara does wish that their life could be a little more exciting. Clara's wish takes an unexpected turn when Andrew, at work, is assigned to show the visiting Mr. Battingcourt Jr.--the younger half of the head of their London office, who is majority shareholder of their accounting firm--a good time while he's in the U.S. "Batty," as he is affectionately called by his friends, is a party animal, and Andrew, whom Batty rechristens "Hinky", feels he must party along in the name of job security. Clara feels that she is losing her stable husband Andrew to Hinky the party animal. Feeling himself partly to blame for the Hinklins' marital problems, Batty advises Clara that she could make herself more exciting to Hinky by changing her demeanor and appearance, more like Mercedes Vasquez, a beautiful, exciting woman Clara could resemble if made up correctly. Clara agrees to Batty's plan to come to one of their parties masquerading as exotic Latina Dolores Alvaradez, to woo Hinky and thus ultimately show him that she can be exotic like he probably now wants. Complications ensue when others find out about Batty's scheme--and when Mercedes Vasquez also attends that party.—Huggo
