The best Sherlock Holmes movies dive into the life and exciting cases of the famed sleuth created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There has always been a fascination with detective stories, so it makes sense that the most famous detective of all time would inspire a number of movies and there are many beloved Sherlock Holmes adaptations. There are a lot of Sherlock Holmes movies out there, some starring the famous Basil Rathbone and others featuring the talented Robert Downey Jr.
There were dozens of books by Arthur Conan Doyle which were adapted into a film, but filmmakers have also created original stories for the detective. Some Sherlock Holmes stories were adapted more than once with new actors and styles. Others are only inspired by Doyle's writing and create original adventures for Holmes and his trusty sidekick John Watson, even exploring Holmes' personal life in some interesting ways.

Just when you thought slasher movies couldn’t get any lower, My Bloody Valentine dug a mineshaft. A deep pit in the caverns of taste. Date movie? My Bloody Valentine was the antidote to Hallmark cards. The main suitor didn’t wear his heart on his sleeve; he bled it out with every candy in the box. Hence why critics weren’t so sweet on the slasher flick when it first came out in 1981, labeling it excessive and derivative.
Nevertheless, the movie has amassed a cult following, and did indeed add subtle innovations to the genre. Is the ‘80s horror offering the low-point of slashploitation or were the reviewers merely suffering overkill fatigue? Quentin Tarantino claims this is his favorite slasher flick, which could be used as an argument for either side.
My Bloody Valentine is celebrating 40 years right now, which is apt for the movie’s plot. According to...

Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Víctor Erice's La Morte Rouge (2006) is free to watch below. In his book The Cinema Hypothesis, Alain Bergala discusses the moment in childhood when a person encounters a film that will become essential in their relationship to cinema, noting that this experience is not subordinated to distinctions of taste or culture, but rather is defined by "aspects of the encounter, in its uniqueness, its unpredictability, and its power to astonish." There is perhaps no more beautiful film dealing intimately with this kind of encounter than Víctor Erice's thirty-minute essay, La Morte Rouge (2006). At the age of five, in the company of his older sister, Erice watched the first film of his life: The Scarlet Claw, a horror-mystery belonging to the Sherlock Holmes series. The screening of The Scarlet Claw is at the heart of La Morte Rouge,...

With Hugh Jackman currently negotiating to play Wolverine for a seventh and eighth time, Cinelinx takes a look at actors who’ve played the same role eight times or more. Who has played the same character most often? Come in and find out.
Hugh Jackman has already played Wolverine five times--x-Men (2000), X2: X-Men United (2003) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and The Wolverine (2013)—as well as a cameo in X-Men:First Class (2011). Soon we’ll be seeing him fully clawed again on the big screen in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Recently, he told Collider that he might shoot Wolverine 3 and X-Men: Apocalypse “back-to-back”, which would make a total of eight times (9 times with the cameo) that he’ll portray the Canadian mutant.
You might be thinking “Wow! That’s amazing! I’ve never heard of anyone playing the same role so many times.” Well, for those who may not know it,...

British television is showing Gremlins, The Goonies, Blue Thunder, Red Heat, Tango & Cash and Innerspace this week. How can you argue with that?
Unless you're a fan of Warehouse 13, which starts its third season on Syfy this coming Thursday, August 4th with The New Guy, the summer lull continues through the next seven days, with an absence of brand new shows on the schedules.
That leaves only series that are midstream, such as Torchwood: Miracle Day, which nears its halfway mark between ten episodes on Thursday August 4th as well, with episode 4, Escape To La on BBC1 at 9:00pm. You can follow our coverage of the show here.
Also on BBC1, the repeat of the final episode of Sherlock's first series, The Great Game airs on Wednesday, August 3rd at 8:30, if you want a refresher before the second series launches this autumn. We have a few details...

Doctor Who and Psychoville end, Mock The Week returns, and the marvellous Role Models is on the telly. Here's our UK TV week preview...
Saturday brings Doctor Who fans both great anticipation and a bit of reluctance for its arrival, as it means possible resolutions of some of our most fierce speculations about the show, at the same time as it leaves us for the entirety of the summer, returning in the autumn.
The mid-series finale, A Good Man Goes To War, airs at 6:40pm, Saturday, June 4th on BBC1. We've had video and images hinting at its contents, but nothing concrete has been revealed, leaving possibilities of Tardis interior proportions.
We'll have our review up as fast as fingers can make it happen, and we'll be anxious to read the comments of those, like us, who've followed this sixth series closely and are still mystified at what will happen Saturday.

Doctor Who leads the holiday programming with The Impossible Astronaut, and there's lots of exceptional films to catch in the week ahead in the UK...
It seems to our (admittedly faulty) memories that prior Easter holidays have been much more tightly packed with specials and programmes for the long weekend and beyond. Thanks goodness, then, that Doctor Who is back!
As you're most surely aware, the sixth series of new Doctor Who returns on Saturday, April 23rd at 6:00pm on BBC1. The Impossible Astronaut, the first of a two-part premiere, sees the Doctor, Amy, Rory and River Song meeting up on the plains of Utah, a huge and expansive backdrop for the kick-off of what looks to be a fabulously exciting season.
We had a spoiler-free review of the opening episodes here, and we'll have all the details and freely shared thoughts in our full review as soon as the first episode airs,...

Primeval ends, Outcasts starts, Bedlam kicks off, Bob's Burgers arrives, Arrested Development goes back to the start, there's Mad Dogs. And lots and lots of movies...
In a busier seven days than we've seen in the last couple of weeks, the schedules wave both hello and goodbye to a number of shows. Some return to proven praise. Others have the hard task of earning it over the next six or so weeks.
Saturday, February 5th brings the end of the fourth series of Primeval at 7:30pm on ITV1. The series has seen the return of a familiar face just recently. Is there room for one more? If you're a fan of the show, tune in and have a squawk about it when the finale review goes live early Monday morning.
New sci-fi show, Outcasts, breaks onto screens in two consecutive episodes over two nights, starting Monday, February 7th at...

As a long time fan of both Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek, it seems fitting to me that these two cultural icons have become intertwined. Prior to the original airing of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I had mused over the similarity in personalities between Spock and Holmes. I had no inkling that Tng would make a connection between the creations of Arthur Conan Doyle and Gene Roddenberry real on screen.
That connection came courtesy of the android Lt. Commander Data. He fancied himself as Sherlock Holmes and in the episode 'Elementary Dear Data', he created a facsimile of Victorian London so that he could 'play' Sherlock Holmes opposite Geordi La Forge's unconventional Doctor Watson.
'Elementary Dear Data' was one of the most entertaining episodes in Tng's second season but I was never entirely satisfied with it. The writers played fast and loose with Holmes canon and Brent Spiner's...
