A difficult choice for an unfaithful wife
This a very rural drama out on the island of Gotland far away from Sweden, dealing with simple people of a basic farm with some cows and pigs, managed by two brothers, who are proud of it, as the farm has passed through the family in many generations, and it is a rich farm. The elder brother is disfigured and notorious for his ugliness, but as he is the legal owner of the farm he is rich, and he wants heirs. A beautiful girl in the village, who is poor indeed, is willing to take him for his money, and so they marry. However, his younger brother, the chief worker at the farm, gets into better and closer contact with her than her disfigured husband, and so there are complications.
It would be a pity to just pass films like this over, they are genuine in their character of exhibiting simple basic rural life, and Viveca Lindfors as the wife torn between an ugly husband she cannot love and his able and handsome younger brother, who loves her, makes the film by her beauty and splendid acting. You wait for some disastrous settlement throughout the film, there is a settlement, but it is not what you would have expected, since Viveca Lindfors is more decent than she appears, and her lover loves her too much not to respect her honest judgement. Her husband, Gunnar Sjöberg, makes a very remarkable performance.
