Thirty years after discovering the tomb of Egyptian princess Ananka, archeologist Stephen Banning (Dick Foran) regales his son John (John Hubbard), John's fiancée Isobel Evans (Elyse Knox), and Isobel's mother Ella (Virginia Brissac) with the story of how he and fellow archeologist Babe Hanson (Wallace Ford) escaped death at the hands of the living mummy Kharis. Little does he know that Kharis (Lon Chaney Jr.) and the newest High Priest of Karnak Mehemet Bey (Turhan Bey) are on their way to the U.S. with the intent of killing the remaining members of the Banning Expedition and their descendants.
The Mummy's Tomb is the third movie in Universal Studio's Mummy series, preceded by The Mummy (1932) (1932) and The Mummy's Hand (1940) (1940) and followed by The Mummy's Ghost (1944) (1944) and The Mummy's Curse (1944) (1944). The movie was filmed from a screenplay written by American screenwriters Griffin Jay and Henry Sucher based on an original story by Neil P. Varnick.
Mehemet Bey sends Kharis to fetch Isobel and bring her to him at the cemetery. Bey explains to her that he's going to make her his bride and make them both immortal. Isobel is not so enthralled with the plan and promptly faints. As Bey mixes up the tana potion and prepares to administer it to Isobel, the enraged townfolk arrive en masse, all carrying burning torches. Kharis slips away with Isobel while Bey talks to the townfolk, assuring them that he doesn't know Isobel. When they do't believe him, Bey pulls out a gun and aims it at Banning, but the sheriff shoots Bey first. They catch sight of Kharis carrying Isobel and follow them to the Evans' house. Banning enters the house to rescue Isobel but falls down the stairs, momentarily knocking himself out. The townfolk start tossing torches into the house and setting furniture on fire. When Banning comes to, he goes after Isobel again, this time helping her to climb down a trellis while he remains behind fighting Kharis. Kharis becomes trapped by the fire, Banning finally climbs down the trellis after Isobel, and the next day the local newspapers announce that Kharis has been destroyed in the fire. In the final scene, the newlyweds sneak out of the celebration and head for the train station only to be met by a crowd of happy people who have amassed to wish them well.
