The first Sherlock Holmes film to be produced with sound.
The final lines of this film are an early variant of Holmes' trademark phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson", the exact line here being "Elementary, my dear Billy" to a boy in the scene. The phrase does not appear in the writings of Arthur Conan Doyle.
The first film to update Holmes, and present him in a contemporary setting.
The film's world premiere was at Shea's Buffalo Theatre, in Buffalo New York, 13 October 1929. (Buffalo Courier-Express, 13 October 1929)
