The "Fast Five" star is in talks to continue replacing Brendan Fraser in the third installment of the incredibly successful "Journey" series of sci-fi adventure films, according to The Wrap.

Johnson appeared as Hank Parsons, a stepfather who's looking to connect with his brooding stepson, Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson), in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." Their bonding commences when Sean intercepts a distress signal from his grandfather (Michael Caine), who's been stranded on the very island that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write "Treasure Island," Jonathan Swift to write "Gulliver's Travels" and, of course, Jules Verne to write "The Mysterious Island."

With four movies opening to over $20 million for only the second time in history, it was a very good weekend to be in the movie business. The Vow wound up in first with an excellent $41.2 million, though Safe House wasn't far behind in second. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island also drastically outperformed expectations, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 3D reaffirmed the enduring popularity of the Star Wars franchise. Overall box office was at over $191 million, which is behind Valentine's Day Weekend 2010 ($204.7 million) but up from with Valentine's Day 2009 ($188.9 million). The Vow's $41.2 million topped Dear John's $30.5 million for best opening ever from a Sony/Screen Gems release. It was also the sixth-highest debut ever in February, and third-highest for a romance or romantic comedy behind Valentine's Day ($56.3 million) and Hitch ($43.1 million). The audience was 72 percent women and 55 percent under the age of 25, and there is currently no CinemaScore available.

As a movie reviewer, when I sit down and write my thoughts on a particular film, I sometimes need to alter my process.  I really can't rate something like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island on the same scale as last year's Drive, or 50/50, or anything with a deep or complicated plot and characters.  But as a family film, it does its job really well, and makes it so both kids and adults will be entertained, without alienating either with humor or or questionable situations.

A few years after Journey to the Center of the Earth, we find Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) at odds with his mother for moving them away from his friends, and marrying Hank (Dwayne Johnson).  However, after receiving an encoded transmission from his grandfather Alexander (Michael Caine...

Chicago – If you hear an unusual sound this weekend, it may be Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jonathan Swift spinning in their graves. The writers who have become an essential part of any growing person’s library have now been associated with a piece of 3D junk that insults the intelligence of everyone who sees it. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is not a trip worth taking.

I know what some of you are already thinking. I’m being too hard on it. It’s a kid’s movie. It’s 3D fun and if it introduces some great authors to another generation than this cynical critic is being predictably belligerent. I wish I could agree. I would love to support a “dumbed down” version of classic fiction that might get young viewers doing something that seems increasingly uncommon – cracking a book. But does it have to be this far down?...

It seems there’s a pervading opinion that children’s entertainment doesn’t have to be good. Any criticism of a work of art intended for the younger members of our society is almost immediately met with cries of “oh come on, it’s just for kids.” It’s a strange form of hypocrisy given that most parents almost always want the best for their kids, except, apparently, when it comes to films. Films seem to get a pass no matter how shitty they may be. But if your kid’s sick and needs a doctor, you want the best possible doctor to treat them. It’s an unfathomable double standard. There should be no shame in demanding better films for youngsters, and, unfortunately, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is not one of those better films. Had its filmmakers not hedged all over their creative bets, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" might have at least been an admirable folly. Its creators many attempts to pander to the lowest common denominator and attract as many potential viewers as possible has made 'Journey 2' look like it was assembled by a creatively challenged brain trust. Based loosely on Jules Verne’s "The Mysterious Island," 'Journey 2' is thankfully not as spectacularly awful as director Brad Peyton’s last kiddy-oriented sequel, "Cats and Dogs: Revenge Kitty Galore." But screenwriters Brian and Mark Gunn don’t really add anything of note to the film’s mostly bland proceedings. If you changed its island setting and accordingly swapped out a few key plot details, the character of 'Journey 2' would not change at all. The rest of the movie’s 94-minute runtime is consequently totally anemic and uninspired, which is saying.

From South Pacific to Archipelago, cinema and fiction has long explored island paradises and hell-holes. But why are film-makers enchanted by islands time and time again?

Jules Verne's works have much to offer the makers of CGI-prone, 3D-disposed kids' adventure flicks. The 2008 version of Journey to the Centre of the Earth did well enough at the box office, so a sequel was obligatory. We could have had Captain Nemo's submarine odyssey, the exploration of Africa from a balloon or a voyage to the moon by cannon-fired projectile. Instead, we get a trip to an island.

Even in Verne's day, this was considered a bit of a let-down. The author's publisher rejected the first version of what was to become The Mysterious Island with the reproach: "Where is the science?" To beef things up a bit, Verne got his adventurers blown off course while escaping from a war zone by balloon.

This cheerfully silly adventure about a secret island is fun enough to forgive its ludicrous central idea

Here's a cheerful and silly family adventure followup to Journey to the Center of the Earth, featuring loads and loads of giant-sized animals. The nearest it comes to being clever is making the "2" in the title work as a goofy pun. Teen explorer Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and his muscly stepdad Hank (Dwayne Johnson) make the remarkable discovery that the imaginary maps in the family-owned editions of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726), Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island (1875) and Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883) all fit together to reveal the shape and actual coordinates of one real secret island – the island in Verne's book! (Huh? What? But surely … oh, never mind.) So they journey to this fabulous place to find Sean's castaway granddad, played by Michael Caine. Thoroughly daft and entertaining.

You know for a movie with Dwayne Johnson, formally known as The Rock, starring in a family-friendly film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, actually looks pretty good. That being said, I don’t have any kids that I could take to watch this. New Line Cinema and Walden Media has just released the new trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which features the likes of Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Michael Caine, Luis Guizman, and Vanessa Hudgens.

The sequel to the 2008 summer flick is loosely based on Jules Verne‘s novel The Mysterious Island. However like the first trailer, the newest trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island still features some pretty weak effects, but some very exciting set pieces.

A new international trailer has been released for the upcoming 3D adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The sequel is loosely based on the classic Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island. The first movie looked so bad I didn't bother seeing it, so of course I have no reason or desire to see this sequel either. The special effects look exceptionally bad.

The movie stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who is the character taking the place of Brendan Fraser who must have found something better to do. Josh Hutcherson reprises his role d the lead character Sean, Michael Caine plays Sean’s lost adventurist explorer grandfather. The movie also stars Vanessa Hudgens as Sean's love interest, and Luis Guzman plays a helicopter pilot that adds a comedic element to the story.

By now, you may well have seen the trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Ostensibly a sequel to Journey To The Center Of The Earth, which proved a surprise hit back in 2008, it appears to have few ties to that film. Brendan Fraser’s bailed from the franchise, and Journey 2’s subtitle implies that it’s loosely based on another Jules Verne novel, The Mysterious Island, which was actually written as a follow-up to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea and In Search Of The Castaways, and therefore has nothing to do with Journey To The Center Of The Earth at all.

The world has a lot of strange and interesting islands. New Zealand, for instance, is a pretty mysterious island. Japan is also fairly mysterious. And don't even get us started about Staten Island.

But when you have an island that features mountains of gold, bees the size of Volkswagens and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's steel-hard pecs -- not to mention "The Hunger Games" star Josh Hutcherson -- then you have to agree that "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" may just top them all.

"Journey 2," of course, implies that there was a "Journey 1," and in this case it's referring not to the legendary rock band (sorry, Randy Jackson) but instead to the family-friendly 2008 3-D adventure "Journey to the Center of the Earth." This time around, they aren't going anywhere near the center of the Earth, with the destination instead being a completely different Jules Verne story, "The Mysterious Island."

Yet another movie set joins the long list of recent productions to have their security breached by determined "spy" photographers. The latest is the Hawaiian set of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to the 2008 family-friendly hit movie Journey to the Center of the Earth. Very loosely based on Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island, the script for Journey 2 had to be reworked to feature Josh Hutcherson's character, Sean Anderson, after Journey star Brendan Fraser declined to reprise the role of Prof. Trevor Anderson. The large set of new pics include a few shots of Hutcherson, but they primarily focus on newcomer Vanessa Hudgens, who can be seen running in distress, lounging in the sand, and *gasp* using a port-o-potty. Some might say I.m a big hypocrite when it comes to chastising actors for taking so-called paycheck roles, but I firmly believe there's a difference between an A-list actor choosing horrid projects and a supporting actor ending up in horrid projects. The principal photography of "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" has been kicked off in late October and now new pictures from the set have been found. Lead stars Vanessa Hudgens, Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Luiz Guzman were seen involved during the filming on Tuesday, November 9.

Taking place at a sandy beach in Hawaii, the production had Hudgens taping her running scene. The 21-year-old beauty seemingly enjoyed the warm weather as she was spotted lying under the sun in between takes. Hutcherson and Johnson, meanwhile, shared a frame for a scene set near some rocks.

Vanessa Hudgens is in final negotiations to play the female lead in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D with a script that’s loosely based on Jules Verne’s classic The Mysterious Island.

Hudgens would join original star Josh Hutcherson who is reprising his role as burgeoning explorer Sean Anderson, and Dwayne Johnson in the film directed by Brad Peyton.

The story sees Hutcherson and Johnson forced to go a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather (who we last heard would be played by Michael Caine). Hudgens plays a Pacific Islander who gets swept into the adventure and end up falling for Hutcherson.

Vanessa Hudgens is currently finalizing negotiations with New Line to play the female lead in Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2.  Brad Peyton is directing the film which will also star Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson and Michael Caine.  

The plot will loosely be based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" and will have Hutcherson and Hudgens searching for his grandfather played by Caine on a mystical island with the help of Johnson's character.  Hudgen's will be Hutcherson's love interest in the film.

Production will begin in North Carolina and Hawaii in late October.  The first movie had laughable special effects so I am hoping that those are drastically stepped up for this sequel.  I also was not sure if it was Brendan Fraser's horrible acting or a poor script which added up to my distaste of the first film.
