“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
The critics group selections for best of everything “Cinema 2017” are here and the major players involved are arriving in limited release so audiences can play along. Big city living should provide ample opportunities to see what the hullabaloo is about and choose your own faves within it.

1. Other cities were in the running as the show’s backdrop Shonda Rhimes wanted the show to take place in a big city where surgeons would come for big opportunities. “This is not a small town life. Big city, big medical center, big surgical opportunities,” Rhimes said in a recent Master Class. She thought about placing the medical drama in Chicago, her hometown, but didn’t want to place it in the same city as “ER.” “Seattle felt fresh to me,” Rhimes said. “Seattle felt like a city I hadn’t seen in television a lot.” 2. Rhimes has a casting rule to keep her.

Balletic, stylized and rather aloof, MGM’s biggest musical for 1954 still has what musical lovers crave — good dancing, beautiful melodies and unabashed romantic sentiments. Savant has a bad tendency to fixate on the inconsistencies of its fantasy concept — in which God places an ideal Scottish village outside the limits of Time itself.

Spoiler alert! This article contains details of tonight's series finale of HBO's Girls. Like Joan Didion fifty hears before her, Hannah Horvath said goodbye to all that. Goodbye to Girls. “Latching,” tonight’s series finale of Lena Dunham’s groundbreaking (truly) HBO drama was a departure all around – in plot, of course (stop…...

I must admit, I agree with Roy Thomas and Larry Hama.
Unfortunately, this puts me in opposition to at least three of my ComicMix fellow travelers – Martha Thomases, Joe Corallo and Adriane Nash. And, probably, many others who occupy these premises. That should make our next staff meeting amusing.
Iron Fist – I’m talking about the Marvel/Netflix series – most certainly is not The Prisoner of 21st Century. It’s not even as good as Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. But from reading the reactions of the aforementioned critics and many others, I do not find it to be the You’re In The Picture of the 21st Century, a show so obscure and godawfullousy that only Bob Ingersoll remembers it.
To be fair, I’ve only seen the first four episodes. Then again, Martha’s only seen the first four as well. But those critics who have been...

I spent some time in Waco as a kid and it was always a friendly place to live, but not particularly bustling when I lived there (at least not when you come from London.) So when I had a chance to tour the Magnolia Market at the Silos and see what all of the excitement was about, I could not believe the hustle and bustle of the crowds shopping, kids running around playing, the lines at the Silos Baking Co. and the general excitement of people of all ages who were making the pilgrimage to Hgtv stars Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market and Gardens.

Chip and Joanna Gaines may have put Waco, Texas on the reality TV map with their hit Hgtv show Fixer Upper, but the couple would consider leaving “the lone star state,” at least for a period of time.
Speaking with press at a Kilz Master Class and media tour of the Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco on Tuesday, the reality stars revealed that leaving Waco is a possibility for their family.
“We’ve got four young babies and so the farther we get from home, it makes it almost impossible for us to figure out how to keep...

Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice” (The Film Arcade) is the latest mid-summer hit, joining the recent turnaround in art house fortunes. Following his template for “Sleepwalk With Me,” Birbiglia & Co. boosted box office via frequent appearances at their New York cinema. The already strong film surged to a huge initial $90,000 number with many sold out shows on multiple screens.
Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” (Lionsgate) continued to improve on the director’s recent performance, and could end up besting two other recent strong openers. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) continue to have strong expansions; both could end up over $10 million as well.
Asian wide-audience commercial releases are performing well in domestic play, with entries from South Korea, India, the Philippines along with China continuing to deliver strong niche results.

Blink and you’ll miss it, the new Woody Allen film, Café Society, is packed with the genius’s usual mile a minute musings, teachings, and even action. It’s Allen’s examination, after thoughtful analyses of towns from Barcelona to Paris, of that juggernaut of the West—dreaded by all real New Yorkers like Woody himself. But perhaps because Allen’s distaste for La La Land is all too real, the film quickly extracts itself from Los Angeles, and one is left hard pressed to distinguish Café Society from any Allen film of yore. While Café Society shows flashes of brilliance in its analysis of the ennui of life, it never coalesces into a sum greater than its promising parts.
Café Society follows deer-in-headlights Bobby Dorfman, from the Bronx, as he wistfully tries to make it big in Hollywood in the 1930s. Played with stunning Allen-like obnoxiousness by the talented Jesse Eisenberg,...

Unless you have a Bad Dog or a Bad Cat, in which case the torn-up sofas and puddles of vomit you return to are already pulling back the curtain of mystery on their daily doings. So best consider the charming The Secret Life of Pets more an animated fantasy than a documentary, in case you were in any doubt.

Most may think my creative output over the last few years has been little more than bitching about that company that must not be named. Not true. Not true at all.
I have been busy creating some of the best work of my career…only to have them stolen.
Stolen I say! Taken from me by those who have duped you all into thinking it was they who created such masterworks.
My first creation, the Overstreet Guide to Cosplay says on the cover it was written by Melissa Bowersox, Eddie Newsome and Carrie Wood.
Ha! I say ha! I’ve been cosplaying since I was a young boy growing up in the south back in the 1930s. I remember when I came up with the idea to cosplay; I was around oh I don’t know some age when I said out loud; “I have invented cosplay.”

One of movie fans favorite events of Oscar Week was held Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, as the Academy held the eighth annual event celebrating the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film.
The evening featured clips from each film, followed by an onstage discussion with each group of nominated filmmakers.
This year’s eclectic mix – Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie and When Marnie Was There – are as international as they are distinct.
Employing a stunning variety of animation techniques, the nominees explored a wide range of topics, including existential despair, devastation of natural resources, learning to handle emotion, the value of friendship and surviving the difficulties of adolescence.
This year, members were able to stream the movies and voting came from all over the world.
The evening’s hosts were Don Hall, Chris Williams, Roy Conli, last year’s Oscar winning team from Big Hero 6.

If a romantic comedy called How to Be Single sounds rather baldly antithetical, that’s because the title is a bit of a misnomer. No, the commercials didn’t overtly deceive you: this is a glossy, New York-set ensemble rom-com, and it is populated by an assortment of camera-ready, charismatic actors, all of whom play single folk struggling to navigate the Big Apple’s hectic dating scene. Its characters are also all flying solo, for a variety of reasons and with wide-ranging levels of success.
But when it comes to actually instructing audiences in the ways of the lonely heart, the movie, directed by Christian Ditter, doesn’t have a clue. Its title would have been more accurate with punctuation added, so that it would appear less like a college seminar course (How to Be Single) and more like the socially regressive, queasily single-shaming lament it actually is for most of its length (How?...

World Club Dome is set to return to the Commerzbank Arena for its 2016 edition, and after last year saw record attendance, the event’s organizers have pulled out all the stops to ensure that this year’s festivities follow suit. The event is hosted by German radio station and promoter Big City Beats, whom have unveiled the star-studded lineup this week.
While the thought of German electronic music might call to mind images of shadowy underground nightclubs where obscure deep house and techno DJs slave over vinyl records, World Club Dome features a lineup fit for the Tomorrowland main stage. Martin Garrix, Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta are but a few of the names on the roster, in addition to the return of Hardwell.

The second feature from Brazilian filmmaker Alê Abreu is perhaps the most unlikely nominee for this year’s Best Animated Feature Oscar. Not that Boy & the World isn’t absolutely exquisite; it’s just that it got only a tiny release and so has bypassed even most animation fans, and it’s not from one of the major players in modern cartoons. Boy couldn’t be any further from the typical Pixar, Disney, Studio Ghibli, or Aardman movie: this is very nearly a one-man project from Abreu, who not only wrote and directed the film but also edited it and created the utterly unique hand-drawn animation himself.

The Legenderry line from Dynamite Entertainment takes well-known characters and reinvents them in a steampunk setting. I've enjoyed my time in this unique universe, and Dynamite's unique band of characters surprisingly suits the setting well. One of the most seamless cases is Green Hornet and Kato, whose look and characterization is just spot on thanks to writer Daryl Gregory and artist Brent Peeples. Now you can catch their solo adventure (though I do recommend giving the core Legenderry book a read as well) in their first trade paperback. You can catch the official synopsis below, as well a preview of the book, which hits stores on December 30.

Shaun and his wooly pals are on a mission to make a statement next week when they hit the big screen in Shaun The Sheep Movie.
Lionsgate has released two hilarious Spectre and Mission: Impossible spoof posters before the film opens on August 5.

Their scheme seems to be working perfectly after they trick The Farmer into falling asleep (by making him count sheep, of course), but their staycation is derailed when he is unwittingly transported via runaway camper trailer to the Big City.

With 140 TV episodes and a motion picture under his belt, this little sheep planned a fun-filled day out by taking Shaun Selfies at popular St. Louis destinations! On his list were the Arch, Busch Stadium, the Science Center and the Zoo.
Come and meet with Shaun the sheep
Oh……

As well as returning to the fold for the latest Terminator movie (and stealing just about every scene), Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking an entirely different path with the far more tender, far more nuanced Maggie, a zombie apocalypse movie with a more legitimate heart-beat than the genre typically offers. This isn’t your usual all guts and glory, hundreds of faceless kills zombie movie: it’s rather a touching, at times devastating look at what infection and loss actually mean in human terms.
It is, quite honestly, the most authentic portrait of that cost, which is more concerned with the idea of becoming dead rather than grotesquely celebrating what it means to become undead. And at its heart is a genius understated performance by an actor whose versatility is never as openly applauded as it should be. We take a look back at 1988's The Naked Gun, its timeless brand of comedy, and Leslie Nielsen's superb performance...
Detective Frank Drebin's outside his Los Angeles police precinct, squeezing off shots into the receding backside of his own car.
How this came to happen almost defies description. Having driven his Ford Crown Victoria into a couple of bins outside the building, Drebin stumbles out, seemingly oblivious to the airbags going off inside. One airbag knocks the car into drive and off the vehicle goes, almost running Drebin over as it rumbles downhill.
As an orchestrated bit of comedy cinema, it's the knockabout equivalent of the famous scene in The Untouchables, where Brian De Palma expertly wrings every drop of suspense from a pram thudding down a flight of stairs at a train station.
On the spur of the moment, Drebin comes to the conclusion that there's a criminal...

Our look at underappreciated films of the 80s continues, as we head back to 1988...
Either in terms of ticket sales or critical acclaim, 1988 was dominated by the likes of Rain Man, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Coming To America. It was the year Bruce Willis made the jump from TV to action star with Die Hard, and became a star in the process.
It was the year Leslie Nielsen made his own jump from the small to silver screen with Police Squad spin-off The Naked Gun, which sparked a hugely popular franchise of its own. Elsewhere, the eccentric Tim Burton scored one of the biggest hits of the year with Beetlejuice, the success of which would result in the birth of Batman a year later. And then there was Tom Cruise, who managed to make a drama about a student-turned-barman into a $170m hit, back when $170m was still an...

There’s much more to this story at Bleeding Cool.
On January 21st of this year, the Washington Post broke the story of the return of Milestone. Missing from the Post and every article since about the new Milestone 2.0 was any mention of me. I’m a founder and co-creator of the original Milestone’s best-known property, Static Shock.
There was to be a statement from Milestone explaining my absence, but in the three weeks since the story broke, Milestone 2.0 has not issued any statement.
Because there was no statement, comic book fans, Milestone fans, and my fan (I had two, one died) took to social media speculating as to why I was missing. Missing from news stories and missing from interviews, which was curious. I was no longer a part of the new venture, but in all the interviews, I was missing from the history of Milestone 2.0.

Legenderry: Red Sonja #1
Written by Marc Andreyko
Art by Aneke
Colors by Impacto Studios
Published by Dynamite
On a surface level, it doesn’t seem that the sword and sorcery adventures of Red Sonja could fit in a Victorian steampunk story. However, in Legenderry: Red Sonja #1, writer Marc Andreyko and artist Aneke combine witty dialogue (and voiceovers), plenty of action, and hook readers in with a mystery/conspiracy plotline along with an equally mysterious foil for Red Sonja. Andreyko may lay this doubling on a little too thickly with the hooded woman’s inner monologue being the inverse of Sonja, but she propels the plot forward and will play a huge role in the miniseries as a whole. Aneke has a good command over space and pacing and uses jagged panels during the fight scenes to make them seem especially brutal. She even makes Red Sonja’s chainmail bikini sometimes...

Charming in that gloriously detailed Aardman way, but with its simple slapstick humor, it’s strictly for the littlest tykes. I’m “biast” (pro): love Aardman cartoons
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I love Aardman’s lovingly handcrafted stop-motion claytoons, but I never had any interest in their TV series Shaun the Sheep — spun out of the Wallace & Gromit short “A Close Shave” — and I see now that I wasn’t really missing anything. The first big-screen outing for Shaun and his barnyard friends is charming in that gloriously detailed Aardman way — down to the airplane contrails in the sky above and the visible fingerprints of the animators in the clay — but it’s strictly for the littlest tykes. Its simple story has Shaun, the small flock of which he is the nominal leader, and the drill sergeant of a dog,...

Shaun the Sheep Movie is like curling up underneath a big cosy duvet with a steaming cup of sugary tea. Everything is precision engineered to enchant and amuse, dragging us into a paradise Britain fuelled by pleasant whimsy and running to clockwork comedy timing. From pastoral dale to bustling metropolis, this plasticine world (literally) bears the fingerprints of its loving creators. And at the centre of it all is a resourceful, brave and cunning hero: Shaun the Sheep.
The moment Shaun innocently padded on screen in 1995’s Wallace & Gromit: A Close Shave, a woolly star was born. A breakout success, Britain clutched Shaun to their collective bosom and the sheep became a minor pop culture phenomenon. His lasting popularity led to a spinoff Cbbc TV show in 2007, which is now in its fourth season and has 130 episodes under its belt. It’s also broadcast in a whopping 180 countries and has even launched its own spinoff.

Sticking to a family friendly plot, the film follows Shaun as he decides to leave the farm...
