Based on a famous Spanish operetta, Luis Buñuel decided to cut the songs and focus on the dramatic aspects of the story, even by enlarging characters from the original text.
Part of a deal for 18 movies that Buñuel signed up with the company Filmófono. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, however, made the full arrangement impossible.
