- Larry Semons is sent to collect unpaid rent in a rough neighborhood where "Babe" Hardy as the local boss won't give up easily.
- Larry does a "Sir Walter Raleigh" with his coat over a particularly muddy crossing for a passing lady. He has laid the coat over an open manhole, however, and the lady disappears from sight. A cop seeing, gives chase. In eluding the policeman, Larry literally hurls himself into a real estate office and a job as a rent collector. The neighborhood he enters to collect the rents Is so tough, he has a rough time and is finally placed in a second floor room as a captive. He is seen joined by the leader of the society girl settlement workers, who has been kidnapped. They plan escape, but e.re detected, and in the resultant chase, havoc takes place in the basement barber shop, where the big boss of the tough element is trying to get a shave. The final touch is added when myriads of tar are splashed through the glass side walk into the basement barber shop, and the big boss nearly annihilates the barber before he discovers that the rent collector is the cause. Larry and the girl finally escape in an ancient automobile with the villain speeding after them on foot. He climbs into the back of the car, but they are unaware of his presence until he is jolted out. While gloating over his discomfiture they fail to see a cliff and the car goes over. It explodes in a cloud of smoke. The lovers, however, emerge in a dazed, but happy condition.—Copyright Description from Library of Congress
