All the actors playing Finnish natives were actually Australian, and had to learn the Finnish language phonetically.
Screenwriter Robert Benjamin has stated that he initially came up with the idea while traveling, and noticing a family of foreigners at the airport staring at him oddly, while whispering in their native language. Naturally, he assumed they were planning to kidnap and eat him, and so he began thinking of all the things he would do if he woke up in some dark basement. He wrote the outline for the film at the gate while waiting for his flight.
The first of a planned trilogy.
Shot on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia.
Actor Travis Jeffrey, who plays both twins, Gael and Gideon, came up with the distinct differences between the siblings on his own. Most notably, the lazy eye of Gideon, which is an actual ability of Jeffrey's, and stark contrast in each of their personalities. Gael being the strong, leader type, while Gideon being more of a weaker follower. In the script, they were essentially interchangeable.
