Every trend comes and goes. And it feels like, here in the '20s, cinema is on the waning edge of several of them. The uncontrolled bloat of major studios' streaming services came to a halt with last year's writers and actors' strikes, causing many of said services to curtail their spending habits. Major entertainment franchises ("Star Wars") made big cinematic plans, only to cancel them after several high-profile failures, inspiring a pivot to TV that's only proven sporadically successful.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an especially interesting case, having managed to crank out a few notable hits since the release of "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. Still, the franchise has, in the last five years, begun to increasingly lose money due to films under-performing at the box office, troubled productions leading to a massive ballooning of budgets ("Secret Invasion" cost how much??), and a waning interest in its overwhelming glut of content.

Venom: The Last Dance is experiencing a good time at the box office in China. The film has hit a significant mark there in four days. On Saturday, it surpassed a record registered by Jason Momoa starrer DC film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, aka Aquaman 2. With the recent (extremely disappointing) release of "Joker: Folie a Deux," there is nothing standing between the old DC and the new DC Universe, which kicks off later this year when the animated "Creature Commandos" arrives on Max. Then DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans kick into high gear next summer when Gunn's new "Superman" movie hits theaters. What are those plans, exactly? An ever-growing list of movies and TV shows has already been confirmed, and put simply, the DC Universe is getting a reboot. Unfortunately, there is still some confusion for the time being.

The easiest thing would be for Warner Bros. and DC Studios to say "we're starting over completely fresh. Nothing from the former Dceu counts, but everything going forward does." Unfortunately, it's not so simple. Certain projects that were in the works before are going to be ushered in as part of the future.

No matter how you feel about Rotten Tomatoes, it's now more important than ever when it comes to whether moviegoers decide to check out the latest releases in theaters, and it's not uncommon for studios to tout scores as proudly as they do star ratings.

In the case of the DC Extended Universe, the franchise has never had a particularly easy time of it with critics. These movies were overshadowed by the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the start; attempts to be totally different failed and later releases which borrowed heavily from the McU's tone drew a mixed response.

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ premiered this Friday worldwide, and to say that the movie has been abysmally received is an understatement. Both fans and critics agree that it’s a bad movie as it’s Rotten Tomatoes keeps going down as the hours pass by and reviews are added.

The movie currently stands at 33% when it comes to critics and 34% when it comes to the approval rate by the audiences. The movie also received a “D” CineScore from the audience, the lowest of any superhero movie in history.

“Salem’s Lot” is once again getting the adaptation treatment, this time as a film from “Annabelle Comes Home” director and “It” screenwriter Gary Dauberman.

The latest crack at Stephen King’s acclaimed vampire novel managed to pull together a cast of recognizable faces despite being pulled from a theatrical release to go directly to Max. “Salem’s Lot” follows a writer’s return to his hometown, searching for inspiration for his next book, only to find out the place is slowly being overrun by vampires.

Five years ago, Warner Bros. and Todd Phillips’ “Joker” pulled off a series of firsts, including the first comic book film to win the Golden Lion and the Best Actor Oscar, as well as the first R-rated film to gross $1 billion at the global box office.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” will not reach that $1 billion mark, but there’s still a chance that the follow-up can be a hit film for Warner — if fans of the original embrace the musical numbers that take place inside Arthur Fleck’s fractured mind. Warner Bros. is projecting an opening weekend in the $50 million range, which would put it in the neighborhood of the $55 million opening earned by last year’s big DC flop “The Flash.”

One of the most anticipated movies of the fall season is nearly upon us as "Joker: Folie a Deux" is just around the corner. Director Todd Phillis is back with a sequel to 2019's blockbuster hit "Joker." Joaquin Phoenix is also back as Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, after winning an Oscar for his work as the DC Comics villain in the first film. The follow-up, which is going to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September, is far bigger than its predecessor, meaning it's far more expensive. That's something that has generated much discussion, and it's a discussion that Phillips doesn't quite seem to understand.

James Wan is finally set to return to his horror roots with his upcoming movie, which will be the remake of 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon, often seen as one of Universal’s last great monster flicks. The creator of the Conjuring series, who previously helmed Dceu’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, is set to take a more grounded approach with the remake.

Moreover, it appears the director might bring back concepts from his scrapped Dceu feature, which was set to hit the theatres before the brand’s swansong.

Originally, James Wan was set to helm an Aquaman spin-off, titled The Trench, which was slated for a 2019 release. While much is not known about the film, The Conjuring filmmaker later revealed it was supposed to be a Black Manta film.

Will horror B-movie audiences finally get the remake they’ve been waiting on for decades? Universal is again looking to remake the 1954 monster movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” and this time they’re looking to the “Aquaman” director James Wan — someone who knows a thing or two about underwater battles and gill-men — to develop his own modern take, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

Wan may direct too and is in early talks to tack on that responsibility. If he does, it would be his first project behind the director’s chair since merging his production company Atomic Monster with Blumhouse Productions.

Wan’s take, according to the individual, will be a grounded, modernized retelling, leaning into “visceral horror,” but it will still pay respect to the original. No screenwriter or talent is attached just yet. Atomic Monster will produce the film, with Wan as a producer.

The Creature From the Black Lagoon is rising once again.

James Wan, the creator of the Saw and The Conjuring horror franchises, is developing a new take on the classic Universal monster property and is in early talks to direct the feature project.

The move comes as Wan and his collaborators presented Universal with a pitch to remake the 1954 monster classic. A writer will now be hired to write a script, working in concert with Wan.

This is the first project Wan has attached himself to as a director following his company’s production banner, Atomic Monster, merging with Blumhouse. Wan was under water for the last few years on DC superhero movie Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and has been looking to get back to his horror roots in some way.

Wan will act as a producer on Creature, while Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear and Judson Scott serve as executive producers.

Following the release of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ the superhero media world was shaken by allegations against Jonathan Majors, known for his roles as He Who Remains in ‘Loki’ Season 1 and Kang the Conqueror in ‘Quantumania,’ the next major villain for the Multiversal Saga.

Jonathan Majors’ career has been in a freefall since his arrest in March 2023 for the alleged assault of a woman rumored to be his girlfriend. He was dropped from several projects, his manager and PR team quit, and several commercials featuring him were pulled.

However, the actor maintained his innocence throughout the process, and his legal team assured him they would prove his undoubted innocence. Initially, they released text messages between Majors and the alleged victim, but this only seemed to backfire in the public eye. In December, a guilty verdict was reached, and Disney fired Majors, prompting numerous changes within the franchise.

With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came the end of the Dceu, otherwise known as the Snyderverse. And while some celebrate its demise, there are also many who mourn the loss of their heroes. But before we turn the page completely, let’s take a look back and rank the entire DC Extended Universe. I’m sure this won’t be controversial at all.

17. Suicide Squad (2016)

It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll ever get the fabled Ayer Cut of this film, but the one we received was rough. Filled with enough licensed music that it feels like a music video, Suicide Squad does everything wrong. From characters being introduced multiple times to the worst iteration of the Joker ever put to film, everything about this one is just a mess. If you love plots that don’t make sense and bad CGI, then this one is for you.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will lead the cast of Netflix’s upcoming thriller series “Man on Fire.” He will also executive produce the project alongside Steven Caple Jr., who has been set as director of the first two episodes under showrunner Kyle Killen.

“Man on Fire” is based on A.J. Quinnell’s first two novels about former French Foreign Legion solider John Creasy, titled “Man on Fire” (1981) and “The Perfect Kill” (1992). This is not the first adaptation of the Quinnell novels; Creasy was played by Denzel Washington in a 2004 “Man on Fire” film and by Scott Glenn in 1987.

The logline for Netflix’s adaptation reads, “Once a high functioning and skilled Special Forces Mercenary, known for surviving even the most desolate of situations, Creasy (Mateen) is now plagued with intense Ptsd. Exclusive: Emmy-winning actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen ll will star in and executive produce Netflix’s upcoming series Man on Fire. The project was ordered by the streamer in March.

The eight-episode drama series is an adaptation based on A.J. Quinnell’s Man on Fire and The Perfect Kill, the first two books in Quinnell’s five-book series previously adapted to film in 2004 starring Denzel Washington and in 1987 in an Italian film of the same name. Director Steven Caple Jr. will direct episodes 1 and 2 of the latest incarnation and also serve as executive producer.

In the new series, Abdul-Mateen II will lead as John Creasy, a once high-functioning and skilled Special Forces mercenary known for surviving even the most desolate of situations. Creasy is now plagued with intense Ptsd. Determined to overcome his personal demons, he sets out on a path to redemption.

Nickelodeon has revealed a star-studded list of nominees for its annual Kids’ Choice Awards. Leading the pack with six noms is Taylor Swift, followed by Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus and Beyoncé, with four noms each.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported its first-quarter 2024 earnings Thursday, revealing it had reached 99.6 million paid streaming subscribers in a tough quarter for studios and networks.

That’s a growth of nearly 2 million subscribers from the 97.7 million subs across HBO and streamers Max and Discovery+ that Warner Bros. Discovery reported for the end of 2023.

On Wednesday, Wbd and Disney announced a deal to launch a streaming bundle with Max, Disney+ and Hulu this summer. Pricing wasn’t disclosed.

Wbd’s overall net loss for the first quarter of 2024 was $966 million. Free cash flow stood at $390 million. The company paid $515 million in net interest expense in Q1.

Streaming revenue was flat compared with the year-earlier period, at $2.5 billion. Streaming ad sales rose 70% to $175 million vs. $103 million for Q1 2023. Warner Bros. Discovery added 2 million direct-to-consumer (Dtc) subscribers in the first quarter of 2024. It now has a total of 99.6 million Dtc subscribers across Max, linear HBO, Discovery+, and some relatively small international streamers you’ve never heard of — don’t worry about those.
