Salem's Lot is widely regarded as one of Stephen King's best - and perhaps more importantly, most terrifying - novels, which is why the new adaptation currently streaming on Max simply didn't cut it for the majority of fans and critics.
The movie follows the basic premise, but does not flesh out the main characters enough and is seriously lacking in scares and gore (pretty much every kill takes place off-screen) despite the R rating. It also leaves out some major story elements, including Ben Mears' childhood connection to the Marsten House.
In the book, this haunted house is almost a character in its own right, and is the source of evil in the town of Jerusalem's Lot that attracts Kurt Barlow and Richard Straker in the first place. The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is now available to stream on Max, unleashing a stylish vampire outbreak without much in the way of story. It turns out that there was a much longer cut of the film that Dauberman ultimately trimmed down for a leaner runtime.
The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with Den of Geek, “My first cut was about three hours. There’s a lot left out. My first draft of the script is 180-odd pages or something because you’re trying to include everything. And a lot of it has to do with a lot of the secondary characters and stuff that I spoke about. So it was sad to see that stuff go, but it’s like a necessary evil.”

She went from straight-a student to the star of Scandal, but always had a nagging doubt about her place in the world. Then the actor agreed to go on a US genealogy show - and discovered her own story wasn’t quite as it seemed …
That Kerry Washington comes from a seemingly perfect family is something to which I thought I could attest. Four years ago, on an icily grey day in New York City, I met the actor after watching her gut-wrenching performance on Broadway in the play American Son. I sat on a sofa on the vacated stage, in deep conversation with Washington’s parents, Earl and Valerie: she a professor, he a businessman, who had raised their daughter in a hard-working, predominantly black neighbourhood in the Bronx. I remember thinking how good-looking, charming and erudite they seemed. And Washington – gracious and gorgeous in real life – made so much sense as their offspring.

Kerry Washington has tried to part ways with Hollywood for decades.
The Emmy-winning actress told W Magazine that she is “always quitting” acting until another great script pulls her back in.
“I have spent a lifetime trying to not be an actor,” Washington said. “I am always quitting this business, and then right when I decide that I’m done is when something extraordinary comes across my desk.”
She explained, “I was really, really done with this business right before I read the script for ‘Ray.’ I was really, really done with this business right before I read the script for ‘The Last King of Scotland.’ I was entirely done with this business before reading the script for ‘Scandal.’ This is what happens again and again.”

“I’ve got one daughter, and you’ve got one daddy,” Edwin (Delroy Lindo) reminds his daughter Paige (Kerry Washington) in the trailer for the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned.” Their relationship is at the heart of the comedy, in which they reunite after Edwin spent 17 years in prison on drug charges. Based on writer and executive producer Tracy McMillan’s own life, the show will chronicle how that reunion unfolds and the impact Edwin has on Paige and her son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana), when he moves in with them. All ten episodes premiere on Friday, March 10. Watch the full trailer above.
The trailer also offers glimpses at the adventures that await the family: Paige pursues a dream of owning a home — and gets a cathartic moment when she takes a sledgehammer to the dated wood paneling in the living room; Edwin teaches Finn how to drive and how to deal...

Antoine Fuqua will direct and produce a new film adaptation of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning look at greed, family, death and sexual repression.
The “Training Day” and “Magnificent Seven” director will join forces with producers Stephen C. Byrd and Alia Jones-Harvey, who backed a 2008 revival of the show that made history with a sold-out 19-week run as the first all-African American production on Broadway. It was also the highest-grossing play during that season.
The show was directed by Debbie Allen and featured Terrence Howard, Anika Noni Rose, Phylicia Rashad and James Earl Jones. The original play centers on Brick, a former athlete turned alcoholic, his sexually frustrated wife Maggie and Big Daddy, the ailing and wealthy family patriarch.
The filmmakers say the movie “will combine elements of the play with new storylines and weave them together to bring the production to the big screen.

Wilson will play a cheerleader who was once one of the most popular kids in her high school before an accident put her in a coma for 20 years. After she awakes, she returns to the same school to finish her senior year as she tries to regain her status and capture the prom queen crown that she once so desired.
Brandon Scott Jones, who wrote the 2019 comedy “Isn’t It Romantic” also starring Wilson, will write the screenplay based on a spec by Andrew Knauer and Arthur Pielli. Wilson will produce with Todd Garner and Chris Bender. Jeremy Stein, Jake Wagner, Jake Weiner are executive producers.

Netflix has added seven new series to its original content slate out of the U.K., working with the likes of former “Mr. Bean” star Rowan Atkinson, Sam Mendes and Andy Serkis, along with new writing talent including Sarah Dollard and Sophie Petzal.
The shows, commissioned by the Original Series team as part of the streaming giant’s continued investment in the U.K., will all be written and produced domestically.
From Mendes and his Neal Street Productions is a six-part show called “The Red Zone,” which mysteriously teases “a comedy about football, but also not about football.” Meanwhile, Atkinson will star in short-form, 10-part comedy series “Man vs Bee,” which finds him housesitting a luxurious mansion while duking it out with a pesky bee.
Elsewhere, in a project executive produced by Serkis, “Giri/Haji” creator Joe Barton is on board to adapt Sally Green’s “Half Bad” trilogy of books,...

It’s only fitting that in 2020 — the year of the coronavirus — Netflix’s top titles include stand-up comedies, “sad movies” and “home baking shows.”
The streaming giant released year-end viewing trends on Thursday that also showed that October was the biggest month for comedy consumption, with audiences seeking to quell pre-election anxiety. “Hubie Halloween,” “The Wrong Missy,” “Space Force,” “Holidate” and “Kevin Hart: Zero Fucks Given” were the most popular comedy titles of the year.
In the three weeks following George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police, viewing soared for titles that reflected the Black experience: “13th” saw the most growth, with viewing up more than 5,000%. “LA 92,” “Dear White People,” “Time: The Kalief Browder Story” and “American Son” views also skyrocketed.
Netflix users also gravitated toward twice as much romance in 2020 as the year prior, with films “The Kissing Booth 2,” “Princess Switch: Switched Again” and...

Netflix has revealed some color about its subscribers’ viewing habits during 2020.
The streamer saw foreign-language dramas such as Spain’s The Platform and Germany’s Barbarians boom, romance titles doubled in popularity and action titles such as Extraction and Cobra Kai flexed their muscles over the last twelves.
Some of the most interesting data provided by Netflix as part of its What We Watched 2020 report was around the pandemic and civil unrest over the summer. In March, as Covid-19 was starting to ravage the world outside of China, viewers were searching for home baking shows with almost a 50% rise from the previous month – a boon for the likes of Nailed It! and The Great British Bake Off.
The following month, searches for sad movies spiked nearly 30%, while subscribers were also calling out for stand-up shows between March and April. October was our biggest month for comedy viewing generally. Hubie Halloween,...

The newly formed Theatre Producers of Color organization announced today its first educational program to support and mentor the next generation of Bipoc producers. The 10-week, limited-space program will be tuition free.
“Producers 101″ will feature a guest speaker roster of top Broadway producers to teach what Tpoc says are the fundamentals of commercial producing, including securing rights, marketing and advertising, development paths, financing, and budgeting. The weekly course begins Jan. 25, 2021.
“Oftentimes, the opportunities for learning how to become a commercial producer are inaccessible and out of reach,” said Tpoc founder Miranda Gohh in a statement. “We’ve observed many barriers keeping Bipoc out of commercial producing, and Tpoc strives to break these down and make producing more accessible for a variety of voices. By making all of our programs free, we are allowing any Bipoc regardless of background, level of education, training, or previous accomplishment to join us.”

The series is co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios where the Kings are based.
Created and written by Robert and Michelle King, The Second Wave follows an unexpected, deadly second wave of the coronavirus outbreak in New York City. It follows the lives of two neighbors, Rachel (McDonald) and Lily (Schilling), as they navigate life in quarantine in New York City. Television Academy voters took to HBO’s “Bad Education,” which won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie on Saturday.
“Bad Education” is a comedy-drama that centers on the true story about the Roslyn Union Free School District 2004 financial scandal, the largest public school embezzlement inthe nation. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney as Frank Tassone and Pam Gluckin, who were accused of stealing hundreds of thousands from the district’s budget. Though their school district is on the up and up the scandal threatens to ruin everything the duo have built, spurring Jackman’s character to do everything in his power to maintain order and stop the story from becoming public.
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich praised “Bad Education” in his B+ review in September 2019, referring to it as “diabolically smart” and a “well-calculated masterclass of narrative economy.” “‘Bad Education’ always finds its way back to Frank, but Makowsky...

This once-proud category fell on hard times when the networks abandoned the format, and increasingly cable outlets did too. HBO and Netflix have kept it alive, the latter finding safe harbor here the past three years with an anthology series of ‘movies’ from its Black Mirror franchise, which was finally ruled ineligible here. This year’s lineup is a bit of a comeback for the category, at least in the case of its top three contenders, and the Black Mirror snub doesn’t seem to have hurt Netflix too much since the streamer has four of the five nominees.

The actress’ quadruple nominations are across three programs, and three of them are for her work as an executive producer: She’s up for Best Variety Special (Live) for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times,'” Best TV Movie for “American Son,” Best Limited Series for “Little Fires Everywhere,” and Best Limited/TV Movie Actress for “Little Fires Everywhere.”
Washington is not expected to prevail for “American Son” (third in our odds) opposite favorite “Bad Education” or for either of her “Little Fires” bids against 26-time nominee “Watchmen” and star Regina King. Her best chance rests with Best Variety Special...

Exclusive: If Beale Street Could Talk star Stephan James is in final negotiations to co-star with Russell Crowe in Paramount’s thriller American Son, which is based on the critically acclaimed French film A Prophet.
Andrew “Rapman” Onwubolu is on board to direct the movie from a screenplay by Dennis Lehane. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing through Original Film.
Rapman landed the job after his film Blue Story, which caught the eye of Paramount execs during the directing search.
The film centers around a man (James), who, after falling under the control of a ruthless mobster (played by Crowe) while in prison, builds a multiracial crime syndicate, takes down his mentor, and earns a place for his crew alongside the Italian and Russian mafias.
The original pic, directed by Jacques Audiard, follows an Arab man (played by Tahar Rahim), who’s sent to a French prison, where he becomes a mafia kingpin.

Paramount Pictures has extended its first-look film deal with “Sonic the Hedgehog” producer Neal Moritz and his Original Film production company, the studio announced on Wednesday.
The deal is a two-year extension that will continue the studio’s relationship through the end of 2023. Moritz first formed the film deal with Paramount in 2019 after leaving a long-time deal with Sony.
Moritz produced this year’s “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which is the highest-grossing movie based on a video game ever and has earned $307 million worldwide. It is also the studio’s record holder for digital sales, breaking first-day digital sales records and taking the studio’s overall title in under three weeks.

Paramount Pictures has announced a two-year extension of its first-look deal with producer Neal Moritz, who delivered “Sonic the Hedgehog” to the studio and is producing the sequel.
The new deal, announced Wednesday, extends the studio’s relationship with Moritz through the end of 2023.
After a strong opening weekend, “Sonic the Hedgehog” went on to become the highest-grossing movie based on a video game domestically, with $146 million in the U.S. and $306 million worldwide. After its home entertainment release, the film also set Paramount’s record for first-day digital sales and became the studio’s all-time record-holder in less than three weeks.
In addition to the sequel to “Sonic the Hedgehog,” Moritz will also be producing “To Catch a Thief” and the upcoming mobster thriller “American Son.” Based on Jacques Audiard’s French film “A Prophet,” “American Son” will star Russell Crowe, with Andrew “Rapman” Onwubolu directing and Dennis Lehane writing the screenplay.

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
Just as the 10-day kickoff for final Emmy voting started in earnest at 9 a.m. Friday, an unprecedented two regular issues of Emmy magazine, the exclusive mag sent to all 23,000 voting members of the Television Academy, arrived in tandem. Both are chock-full of FYC ads which — including Deadline, as you can probably tell — still are everywhere in this Covid-fused Emmy season that officially started with a greenlight for FYC events back in January, even as Oscar season was still swirling around us.
By March, of course, everything had changed, and we entered into the first virtual awards season ever, and now we are in the final stretch. It is so final-stretchy in this truly weird year that all nominees for shows being presented at one of the five Creative Arts ceremony nights (not the primetime show on September 20) were required...

Aaron Paul was in the running for four acting Emmy nominations — for “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” “Westworld,” “Truth Be Told” and character voice-over for “BoJack Horseman” — but unfortunately went 0 for 4. But fret not, he’s still an Emmy nominee who could nab not one but two statuettes.
The actor has two nominations as a producer on Best TV Movie nominee “El Camino” and Best Animated Program nominee “BoJack Horseman,” on which he also voiced Todd Chavez. These are his seventh and eighth career bids, following his five in Best Drama Supporting Actor for “Breaking Bad” and one last year in animated program for “BoJack.”
If he wins both categories, that’ll bump his grand Emmy total to five. Paul was the first to win drama supporting actor three times, but he lost the all-time record last year when Peter Dinklage claimed an unprecedented fourth Emmy in the category for “Game of Thrones.
