A six-part television series premiered on Finnish television in March 17, 1981 on Pikku kakkonen (1977) at Yle TV2 channel. The actual on-screen title is "Karvakuonot" (like in the original series Karvakuonot (1978), shot almost entirely in the studio), but generally known as "Karvakuonot vesillä", the title from the television listings from the first rerun (between October 15 and November 19, 1982). The series was also released on VHS in 1989 with the box title "Karvakuonot vesillä".

Alternate versions
After the series ended in April, an extra compilation episode #7 was aired in May 28, 1981 on Pikku kakkonen (1977). Running ~16 minutes, the extra episode includes selected material from the original episodes 1-4, ending to a camp fire near the rock paintings of Kirnusalmi. Extra episode includes an additional "video tape recordist" credit at the end for Toivo Partanen. The extra episode #7 also competed in the 1981 international Prix Danube festival (of television programmes for children and youth) in Bratislava, Slovakia (then: Slovak Socialist Republic). It was also shown on Slovak television during the festival.
