My Darling Supermarket

Meu Querido Supermercado (2019) is a Brazilian film shown in the U. S. with the translated title My Darling Supermarket. Tali Yankelevich directed the movie.

This interesting documentary follows several staff of a huge supermarket as they go about their daily work. Director Yankelevich uses the Frederic Wiseman documentary approach--we never see the director or the crew. There were about five or six staff people whom we see on and off over several days. They appear to be speaking freely, without reference to the film crew.

The problem with this movie is that the people we meet aren't particularly talkative or interesting. They go about their work with reasonable concern and competence, but nothing special. It's useful--especially for those of us who don't live in Brazil--to see that huge Brazilian supermarkets are no different from huge U. S. supermarkets. However, I didn't find the staff/customer interactions particularly enjoyable or enlightening.

I'm grateful to the Washington DC Labor Film Festival for making this movie available. It doesn't have enough IMDb votes to be significant. I rated it 7.
