Felipe Gálvez’s feature-length debut, The Settlers, takes place in an independent Chile at the end of the 19th century that’s still defined by its period of colonization. Figures of power and influence are all either of European extraction or simply Europeans who’ve sailed over to stake claims to land in a rapidly modernizing country. One such businessman, the real-life Spanish oligarch José Menéndez (Alfredo Castro), hires a small band of surveyors to properly map the outlines of territory that he’s recently acquired in the Tierra del Fuego region. That his tract of land extends into Argentina is the first of many indications that capitalism, with its ignorance of national borders, will simply continue colonialism’s tradition of land theft.
Leading the oligarch’s hired hands is Alexander MacLennan (Mark Stanley), a Scottish ex-soldier who treats a simple surveying mission as something akin to a military engagement.

In a week that saw three theatrical releases debut on Premium VOD, “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$19.99) won the battle. The ensemble action comedy sequel took first place on all four charts we follow, despite competition from “The Forever Purge” (Universal/$19.99) and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (Warner Bros./$19.99).
Meanwhile, “Black Widow” (Disney/$29.99) announced an all-digital platform release for August 10. The unusual aspect is it will be offered as a digital download rather than a rental, with extras including additional scenes and bloopers.
More significantly, “Hitman’s” displaced “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount/$19.99) after just one week as top film. That’s a bit of a surprise; John Krasinski’s hit grossed as much as “Purge,” Conjuring,” and “Hitman’s” combined, and “Hitman’s” grossed the least with $37 million.
That also may mean that the “Hitman’s” audience wasn’t as thoroughly tapped. The audience demo...

As our society has watched the likes of billionaire Richard Branson and Amazon mastermind Jeff Bezos proclaim themselves interstellar pioneers with their recent self-funded forays to the edge of space, it’s serendipitous to see a newly released movie about people inhabiting Mars following an ecological disaster on Earth and a story that unfolds where things predictably go awry. Though said effort, entitled “Settlers” and helmed by Wyatt Rockefeller, foregoes the sleek spacecraft Branson & Bezos have both commandeered in favor of a stark, eroded landscape appropriate for the red planet.

Uniquely American, the Western genre has changed radically over the last century, from nationalistic, myth-building propaganda to revisionist self-critique, specifically of the colonialist narrative that centered white Europeans and left indigenous peoples, in the margins at best or primitive, violent savages at worse. Less rectified than simply ignored or set aside as a once dominant genre faded into disuse, the colonialist-imperialist narrative still exists, albeit often transposed to other settings and time periods like writer-director Wyatt Rockefeller’s feature-length debut, Settlers, a deeply unsettling, discomfiting exploration of a simple, if still provocative, thesis: Wherever we go, there we are, bringing our biases, prejudices, and propensity for violence to frontier life even in a far-flung, futuristic Martian settlement. When we first meet Reza (Jonny Lee Miller,...

Mark Wahlberg strides into theaters this weekend with Joe Bell as the Reinaldo Marcus Green film debuts on 1,093 screens supported by robust advertising and a star-driven social media campaign.

Given the fanfare surrounding Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos’ recent forays into space, “Settlers” feels especially timely. Writer-director Wyatt Rockefeller uses his debut film to anticipate the next step after space travel, raising questions about both human sustainability and ownership.
In some ways, the film also calls to mind the current culture wars revolving around America's origins, with an underlying message about not repeating history.
Unlike Matt Damon’s abandoned scientist in "The Martian," Reza (Jonny Lee Miller) and Ilsa and their daughter Remmy have presumably chosen to dwell in the vast wasteland of the red planet. For nine-year-old Remmy, Earth is merely an idea, a place from which her parents hail. Mars is the only reality she has known, and from the outside looking in, it appears bleak.
Rather than over-the-top echoes of danger, there’s a natural unease to “Settlers” that comes from its stark, dystopian what-if scenarios.

The thing about withholding plot information is that you must generally divulge that which you’ve held back at some point. To simply ignore that your audience is in the dark as far as the big picture is concerned is a sure-fire way to lose interest. Because what’s the point then? What are we really watching if the endgame leaves its characters in the same exact place they were before? I think writer/director Wyatt Rockefeller hopes that his feature debut Settlers will succeed for no other reason than the fact that it attempts to find some semblance of circuitous repetition. When you’re dealing with science fiction colored by the selfishness and greed of humanity, that type of narrative often plays—if it provides something to latch onto.

In Tungaru, two to five players will each take on the task of spreading their own unique culture across the islands of the Tungaru archipelago. To do this, they will navigate their boats between the islands gathering and trading resources such as fish, shells, coconuts and pearls, whilst persuading nomads to join them – adding their own unique abilities. Turn order and special abilities are dictated by a set of five leader cards, whilst individual player mats allow each player to pursue a different strategy by opening slots and abilities in an order to suit them.
Whilst billed as a medium weight euro game, Tungaru feels heavier than most, in my opinion. This is a game that has a lot going on, and it’s one of those euro games that often let’s you “see” what you want to do, but keeps it at arm’s length. A big part...

With the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival now officially wrapped, after making history for being the first in-person film festival since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown, the genre movies it premiered are also noteworthy, particularly for their relatable characters and vital themes. No Man of God, No Running, and Settlers are all remarkable thrillers for their powerful messages of people standing up for, and not backing down from, what they believe in.
No Man of God: Biographical crime thrillers that chronicle the cases of real-life serial killers often sensationalize the criminal’s crime spree in order to shock their audiences. But director Amber Sealey’s new movie No Man of God is a stunning and welcome entry in the genre, as it instead chooses to study the full spectrum of the human condition following the murders committed by notorious serial killer, Ted Bundy.

If there’s life on Mars, there must also be death on Mars: That’s the plainest takeaway from “Settlers,” a stark, scorched, occasionally jolting sci-fi slow burn in which relocating to the red planet can’t save humanity from its basest instincts. Tracing the tumultuous household dynamics of four ex-earthlings over the course of a decade, as they attempt to forge a new life on a hostile surface, Wyatt Rockefeller’s polished, confident debut feature succeeds most vividly as a feat of minimalist world-building — constructing an overwhelmingly desolate Martian farmstead in South Africa’s Namaqualand desert, in which avenues of exploration feel infinite, and escape impossible. Rockefeller’s story world might indeed be more richly imagined than his story, which tends to idle after a tensely wound opening. Still, a fine, surprising ensemble lends human heft to this Tribeca premiere, which could springboard its writer-director to more lavish visions.

Even though I’ve played every single Civilization game, owned every expansion and even religiously explored every spin-off and related title, it wasn’t until Civilization VI came along that I realised just how fundamental the differences between the civilizations are to the gameplay experience. These days it seems obvious – and indeed the very existence of the Frontier Pass expansion (which is almost entirely made up of new races) seems to prove it, but Civilization VI is really all about min-maxing the strengths of your chosen nation to achieve victory.
