[This story contains spoilers from the sixth episode of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, “Hats, Gloves and Effete Homosexuals.”]
Feud: Capote vs. the Swans is a reunion for Calista Flockhart and showrunner Jon Robin Baitz, who created Brothers & Sisters on which the actress starred during its five-season run. It was an instant yes, says Flockhart, when “Robbie” (as she calls him) and producer Ryan Murphy came to her with the role of Lee Radziwill in season two of the FX anthology — one of the coterie of New York City socialites with whom Truman Capote palled around (and later publicly fought) in the 1960s and ’70s.
Radziwell was perhaps America’s best-known little sister; she was four years younger than Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who always overshadowed Lee despite her own efforts to achieve fame as an actress. But without the trappings of the official title of First Lady, Radziwill was able to flourish socially and was well-connected with the literary,...

With Rustin now on Netflix, cinephiles worldwide can enjoy one of the season's top Best Actor contenders. However, one shouldn't presume there's no more to George C. Wolfe's picture than Colman Domingo's spirited turn. Indeed, there's a vast pool of brilliant Black actors around him, breathing life into civil rights icons left and right. Among them, Broadway's First Lady and Tony champion Supreme stands out, the one and only Audra McDonald as Ella Baker. She's only in a couple of scenes but leaves a lasting impression, embodying strength and conveying a rich history between the activists that goes beyond the narrative's limited scope.
As of late, that's McDonald's big screen specialty, serving excellence for a scene or two, and then – poof – she's gone. Just look at her other 2023 movies…...

Salma Hayek Pinault is singing her friend Angelina Jolie‘s praises as a writer and director following the conclusion of production on the film Without Blood.
The film, an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Alessandro Baricco of the same name, is the second collaboration between Hayek Pinault and Jolie who recently co-starred in Marvel’s Eternals from director Chloe Zhao. (Hayek Pinault remained mum regarding whether she would be returning for the rumored sequel.)
“We just finished it,” Hayek Pinault told Deadline. “Angelina is the best director I’ve ever worked with. I absolutely loved working with her; enjoyed every second of it. It’s a tough piece but it was so delicious to come to work every single day. She is a genius and I think this might be her best movie yet. She did an amazing job, really.”

“You can lose sight of the human elements of these people,” declares Dakota Fanning about Showtime’s “The First Lady.” The 10-episode limited series examines the lives of three first ladies — Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis) — as they adjust to life in the White House. Fanning plays Susan Ford, the only daughter of Betty and President Gerald Ford (Aaron Eckhart). Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The First Lady” marked a reunion for Fanning and Pfeiffer; both actresses starred in Fanning’s first film success, “I Am Sam” from 2001. For Fanning, who was only seven years old during the making of that movie, the chance to work with Pfeiffer again was almost too good to pass up. “She’s such a presence in my life just because that movie and that experience is so pivotal to who I am and my career,...

The third episode of Showtime's "First Lady," which airs on May 2, went back in time to explore the early days of its three first ladies: Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Michelle Obama. The show dramatized Michelle's first meetings with her eventual husband, Barack Obama. O-t Fagbenle plays the older version of the 44th president, but the young adult version of Obama is played by Julian de Niro, one of Robert De Niro's sons.
De Niro isn't the first young actor to play Obama at this point in his life. The 2016 movie "Southside With You" also portrayed the Obamas during the years when they'd first met. In that movie, "P-Valley" star Parker Sawyers played the future president.
Julian keeps his life pretty private; his Instagram only has two posts from 2021, and he rarely attends events with his famous parents. Here's everything we know about Julian and his role in "The First Lady.

Showtime’s new anthology series The First Lady debuted this past weekend. The series looks simultaneously at three First Ladies throughout history: Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson) in the 1930s and 40s, Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) in the 1970s and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis) in the 2000s and 2010s. The Film Experience will be covering its run (more soon on invididual episodes).
The network is rolling out a very specific type of red carpet to celebrate the series as it begins airing. Reporting for The Film Experience I was able to visit one of the First Lady Suites, which is a transformed presidential suite at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Los Angeles. This is also happening in New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C. This was quite the lavish and detailed visual experience.

Michelle Pfeiffer didn’t know much about Betty Ford before she signed on to play her in the new Showtime anthology series “The First Lady.”
“I really only knew about, of course, the Betty Ford Center, which is I think what she’s the most famous for,” Pfeiffer told me at the show’s premiere on Thursday at the DGA building in Los Angeles. “And I knew that she came out and was open and transparent about her own issues with substance abuse and alcoholism, which was very, very taboo at the time. And she was discouraged from doing so. And she came out and spoke candidly and transparently about her breast cancer and about mental illness.”
Pfeiffer’s admiration for Ford grew while preparing for the role before transforming into the presidential spouse, who became first lady in 1974 when Gerald Ford was sworn in as president following Richard Nixon...

History-making Oscar, Tony, and Emmy winner Viola Davis is as A-list as they come. However, the “First Lady” star had to fight for her much-deserved spotlight.
Davis recalled in her memoir “Finding Me,” available on April 26, that her physical appearance has been far too often the topic of debate. From being called “ugly” by childhood bullies to attending Juilliard, which tried to turn students into “perfect white actors,” as Davis penned, the “Fences” Academy Award winner has felt pressure to look a certain way.
“The absolute shameful objective of this training [at Juilliard] was clear — make every aspect of your Blackness disappear,” Davis wrote. “How the hell do I do that? And more importantly, Why??!!!”
Davis’ start in Hollywood was rife with limiting roles for Black actresses, mostly for dramatic drug addict parts, as Davis shared in a New York Times interview. According to Davis, casting directors thought she was “too dark...

As Chicago lawyer Michelle Obama becomes First Lady Michelle Obama in Showtime’s newest drama, her predecessor Laura Bush offers some words of advice and comfort. “You may think you have nothing in common with the First Ladies before you,” Laura tells her, “[but] trust me when I say we all felt that way.” Here, Laura Bush acts as both some benign voice of reason (an odd choice) and also as a mouthpiece for “The First Lady” writ large (odder), which tackles the stories of three First Ladies who share little beyond the fact of living in the White House.
There’s Michelle, played by Viola Davis with Obama’s familiar cadence (if also some very exaggerated stenciled half-moon eyebrows). In the timeline that comes closest to working is Betty Ford, embodied by an especially sharp Michelle Pfeiffer. O-t Fagbenle has a message to former president Barack Obama, whom he portrays in the upcoming Showtime series “First Lady,” set to premiere April 17: “Barack, call me.”
Fagbenle discussed his upcoming turn as the 44th president, alongside Viola Davis’ Michelle Obama, at the premiere of Apple TV Plus’s “WeCrashed” on Thursday at the Academy Museum. But did he try to contact President Obama to prepare for his role?
“I did try and get in contact with him, of course!,” Fagbenle said. “This is what happened: Viola knows Michelle, and Viola had been chatting to Michelle, so I was like, ‘Yo, ViVi, yo, help me out, bro, you got a hook up!’ So she put me in contact with the personal assistant of the president, and I’m like, I’m in. Yo, me and B are gonna play a bit of golf together.”

The latest perk, exclusively for Prime members, is a limited-time deal that brings down the price of streaming platform Starz to only $0.99 per month. Starz would normally cost $7.99 a month, either on its independent website or through Prime Video Channels.

At that point, you can choose to renew the subscriptions at their regular cost or cancel at no charge.

“The Crown” and “Sex Education” star joins Viola Davis, who is portraying former first lady Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as former first lady Betty Ford and Aaron Eckhart as President Gerald Ford in what is described as “a revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House.”
Per Showtime, “Eleanor Roosevelt served as the First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, making her the longest serving First Lady in history. She was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. Controversial for her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights, she was the first presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences, write a daily newspaper column and host a weekly radio show. She also pushed the United States to join and support...

Showtime’s upcoming anthology “The First Lady” has recast the role of Nancy Howe, with Judy Greer replacing Pamela Adlon, who had to leave the production due to a scheduling conflict.
Howe was the trusted confidante and social secretary of former first lady Betty Ford (who will be played Michelle Pfeiffer). Per Showtime, “The two were inseparable through thick and thin, from facing Betty’s struggle with breast cancer to turning dusty White House traditions upside down.”
Greer will appear on four episodes of “The First Lady,” which is described as “a revelatory reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. In the East Wing of the White House, many of history’s most impactful and world-changing decisions have been hidden from view, made by America’s charismatic, complex and dynamic First Ladies. Real-world politics not thrilling enough for you? Fear not, for Tyler Perry’s The Oval has finally returned to BET with its thrilling second season. And even after having a night to sleep on it, we’re still trying to wrap our heads around what (and who?) went down in Tuesday’s bonkers premiere.
Let’s begin by addressing the elephant in the room: No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. The maid who discovered Jean’s body in the finale is not the same maid we see reacting to that discovery in the premiere. According to IMDb,...

Neil Patrick Harris spent some of the pandemic filming “The Matrix 4” in Berlin. He tells me that he was surprised that writer-director Lana Wachowski’s shoot was so “intimate.”
“It didn’t feel large because it felt like she was in her sweet spot, which was filming on the fly, filming using natural light,” the Emmy- and Tony-winner says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “Sometimes you’d sit around for an hour waiting for the clouds to clear, and then you’d quickly film. You’d film pages at a time in 30 minutes and then be done.” He adds, “You would think that a giant movie would be 100% storyboarded, animatics, and we’d be checking off shots. I think she lived that before three times over, and I would suspect that she wants to do things her own way now. It wasn’t...

Viola Davis will play Obama, while the role of Eleanor Roosevelt has not yet been cast.

‘Alpha Girls’ Drama Series Based On Book In Works At TriStar TV From Cathy Schulman & Margaret Nagle
Exclusive: TriStar Television is developing Alpha Girls, a Silicon Valley drama series based on Julian Guthrie’s praised new book, Alpha Girls: The Women Upstarts Who Took on Silicon Valley’s Male Culture and Made the Deals of a Lifetime.
The rights deal, orchestrated by producer Cathy Schulman, is said to be TriStar TV’s biggest since TriStar Pictures President Hannah Minghella added oversight of the TV unit in January. Margaret Nagle (The Good Lie) will pen the adaptation for what is being eyed as an ongoing TV series. Schulman executive produces; Guthrie serves as a co-producer.
Schulman’s Welle Entertainment originally landed the rights to the nonfiction book by Guthrie, a New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize nominee, in 2017 in a bidding war that included Amazon, Universal and Smokehouse, among others.
