Mo Dao Zu Shi is an adaptation of the Chinese web novel of the same title, written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu.
The show is based on one of author Mo Xiang Tong Xu's fantasy novels. The book was published in 2016 and has since been adapted into a comic (manhua), an audio drama, an animated series, and a live-action web series that has two spin-off movies. There is also a mobile game in the works.
The original Chinese name, which can be written in pinyin as Mo Dao Zu Shi, literally means "(The) Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" but has also been translated as "The Founder of Diabolism".
It became one of the most popular animations in 2018.
