SEE2023 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
For most of Grammy history there were five nominees in this category. From 2019 to 2021, it expanded to eight nominees, just like Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. And in 2022 the top four categories were expanded once again to 10 slots. In 2024, however, the number went back down to eight in each of the big four categories.

Director Morgan Neville tells Pharrell Williams’ story with Lego in an unusual but fun biopic. Here’s our Piece By Piece review.
A Pharrell Williams biopic-documentary hybrid, told with Lego blocks. If that sentence makes you raise your eyebrows, then that’s understandable: the concept of Morgan Neville’s latest project is an unusual thing on paper, but, rather surprisingly, it works on screen.
Pharrell Williams is the superstar music producer behind some of the biggest names in music, not to mention his own solo tunes such as ‘Get Lucky’ and ‘Happy’ from Despicable Me. Piece By Piece charts the musician’s childhood and rise to fame, with the use of Lego to tell the story intended to reflect his creativity. As the Lego Movies have taught us, you can create almost anything with Lego, and Williams’ musical abilities work in a similar way; he’s able to see combinations that no one else can,...

“It’s happening,” goes a lyric sung over the opening titles of Piece By Piece. “Yes... It’s real.” Just to be sure, here is confirmation, early doors: yep, this is a real film. We’ve had Lego Movies about Batman, Ninjas, Scooby-Doo. But a music documentary Lego Movie? Made with the full participation of self-described “hybrid thinker” Pharrell Williams, Piece By Piece is a surprisingly sincere and serious film about a sincere and serious artist, some distance from the irony-led Lord & Miller Lego entries. It’s quite a handbrake turn for Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom), but it largely follows the standard talking-heads doc template very faithfully. Just in Lego.

“Because I’m happy clap along if you feel like a room without a roof / Because I’m happy clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth,” is the popular lyrics to a song that lives rent-free in the minds of countless fans some days – bright ones, especially – but it doesn’t necessarily evoke happy memories in the mind of its writer.
When Pharrell Williams penned ‘Happy,’ he was feeling the opposite and meant the song to be sarcastic.
How Pharrell Williams Came To Write the Grammy-winning Song ‘Happy’
One of Pharrell Williams’ biggest hits is ‘Happy’ – the song he didn’t necessarily anticipate to catapult him to massive fame in the 2010s.
Williams wrote ‘Happy’ as a soundtrack to 2013’s ‘Despicable Me 2,’ which went on to attract a massive, rounding out the year as the third highest grossing movie. Four months after the movie premiered, Williams...

When musical legend Pharrell Williams first met with Morgan Neville about using Lego to make “Piece by Piece,” a documentary about his life, the Oscar-winning director of “20 Feet from Stardom” was intrigued but perplexed.
“His pitch to me was: I really like your documentaries, and I had the idea that you would make a documentary about me, and then when you were done, you would throw out the visuals and make it again in Lego,” Neville told IndieWire. “And when he said that, I got really interested. But it just sounded like a crazy idea, and I had to think about what that would mean.”
Ultimately, it meant opening up the possibilities of what a doc and animated feature could do as a new form of cinematic expression. The refreshing result and positive buzz out of Telluride and TIFF has Oscar talk of “Piece by Piece” competing in both categories.

The father-son duo behind a Lego recreation of Daft Punk’s “Alive 2007” tour could soon have their project made into an official set.
Last week, Daft Punk and Lego fan Patrick Harboun (aka RobotRock) posted the painstaking recreation of the “Alive 2007” pyramid made with his 8-year-old son at the Lego Ideas community site. Totaling 2,000 pieces, the project began in 2020 as “a creative escape” during lockdown. After his son made a prototype with their bricks at home, Harboun expanded upon the design digitally.
A motor-powered box of transparent bricks inside the pyramid and sets of dangling lights are among the set’s highlights, with the helmets modeled after those worn by the group in Piece by Piece, a Lego-based film about Pharrell Williams’ life.
“Both huge Daft Punk fans, this build is a fusion of 2 passions,” Harboun wrote in the description. “I spent my teenage years listening to Homework on my Walkman,...

Breaking into the music business, crafting insanely addictive earworm hits, recognizing genre boundaries, starting a streetwear fashion line, wearing properly sized ranger hats — Pharrell Williams has never done anything by the book. The kid from Virginia Beach, Virginia, had always felt like someone who saw (and heard) the world differently than his peers. As a youngster growing up in the 1970s and ’80s, that “he’s so… unusual” tag marked him as a bit of a misfit. By the time Pharrell started creating oft-kilter beats as half of the molten-hot...

Pharrell Williams managed to overcome a hatred of his own voice for ‘Piece by Piece’.The 51-year-old singer is used to performing in front of packed stadiums but the ‘Happy’ chart-topper has admitted he didn't enjoy listening to his tones during the making of the Lego biopic.Pharrell told The Hollywood Reporter: "I hate it. Doing it in Lego allowed me to objectively appreciate my voice and my point of view and what I want to do. "When I hear myself without any kind of other platform or anything connected to it, I’m like, ‘Shut the f*** up. Literally, why are you saying that? Like, who cares? Who do you think you are — some philosopher? Shut the f*** up.’"Like, they asked me to do something the other day and I’m like, ‘No. Who wants to hear me? Like, no.’ But this film has allowed me to...

Pharrell Williams was always happy. He wasn’t always humble.
Since earning his first music credit on Wreckx-n-Effect’s 1992 ass-shaking anthem “Rump Shaker,” the producer/songwriter/rapper/singer/composer/fashion designer/movie producer/father has spent the past three decades on top of the world. You could easily write a thesis on how his inventive, colorful beats and creative lyricism — some as one-half of The Neptunes — have contributed to the pop culture landscape. He helped Britney Spears transition from teeny bopper to racy pop star; gave swag to Nsync and later Justin Timberlake, aiding in his successful solo sprint; had everyone getting undressed at the club with Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” and the boys — and girls and everyone else — running to the yard with Kelis’ still tasty “Milkshake.” Along the way, he gave Snoop Dogg his first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in “Drop It Like It’s Hot,...

Justin Timberlake‘s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” managed to be both retro and trendy at the same time. However, the “Cry Me a River” star seemed lukewarm on “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” Regardless, the public couldn’t get enough of the track.
Why Justin Timberlake recorded ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling!’ when he didn’t want to do so
On one level, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” is a quintessential Timberlake song. He wrote it with Max Martin, the producer behind some of the hits from Timberlake’s boy band days. It’s also a disco song. When Timberlake isn’t making R&b, he’s making dance songs. He even previously experimented with the genre with “Take Back the Night.” However, Timberlake seems distant from “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”
During a 2020 interview posted on his YouTube channel, Timberlake discussed “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”

Pharrell Williams has always done things differently in his music and his fashion, so why would his movie be different?
The singer-producer-designer is doing a biopic about his life. Focus Features just released the trailer for it. But it’s not your average musician biopic of the kind “Walk Hard” parodied. No, Williams is telling his life story through Legos. The movie is called “Piece by Piece,” but a more descriptive title would be “The Lego Pharrell Movie.”
The film follows Williams’ artistic journey, from growing up in Virginia Beach to the peak of the music industry, but tells it in an unconventional way, with impressionistic animation that combines psychedelia and Legos. The film is directed by Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville in his feature debut.

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and every king has a court. It’s no surprise he worked with several other megastars across genres over the course of his life. Some of those collaborations are classic and others are tragic.
1. Justin Timberlake
“Love Never Felt So Good” is a posthumous disco duet with Justin Timberlake. It’s not as good as Jackson’s classic disco tracks but it has an infectious, cherry energy. It feels more like a prequel to Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” than anything else.
The song has some great timing. It came out in 2014. 2013 saw a huge revival of disco music with hits like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Bruno Mars’ “Treasure.” while it was a song from the vaults, “Love Never Felt So Good” felt practically modern! The tune appeared on the posthumous album Xscape. Xscape is not Thriller,...

Daft Punk is a duo that hardly needs an introduction. From Grammy-winning hit songs like "Get Lucky" to their work on soundtracks to blockbuster movies like "Tron: Legacy," the electronic musicians have conquered the world. But long before Hollywood came calling, the French beat-makers got a boost from the folks at Cartoon Network. Specifically, when the band's anime-inspired music videos aired on Toonami.
Complex did a deep-dive into the history of the anime-focused gamble that was Toonami back in 2017. While the programming block certainly helped give anime a profile boost in the U.S., it also helped out several popular musical acts, Daft Punk among them. The legendary Nile Rodgers brought a whole lot of funk to the NPR office for the latest iteration of their Tiny Desk Concert series.
Rodgers’ six-song setlist serves as a useful reminder of just how ubiquitous his music is. He and his Chic bandmates kicked things off with their 1978 disco classic “Le Freak,” the whoops and hollers of the vocalists meshing with those from the equally-energized audience.
“Obviously, every song we’re gonna play today is a song I wrote,” Rodgers said between songs with a smile, laughing off the braggadocio of the statement. Daft Punk will continue their 10th anniversary celebration of Random Access Memories this November with a “drumless edition” of their Grammy-winning 2013 album.
Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), due out November 17, features all 13 songs from the original LP, but as the title suggests, the drums and percussion have been stripped from the defunct dance duo’s tracks.
Ahead of the reworked LP’s release, Daft Punk has shared the “drumless” version of the ballad “Within”; although already one of Random Access Memories’ less percussive tracks, the “drumless edition” take spotlights Chilly Gonzales’s piano work.

Daft Punk are still keeping the good times rolling as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their final studio album. After sharing an extended deluxe version of it earlier this year, the French house duo have announced Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), a track-by-track reimagining of the record without a single drum beat.
While it’s hard to imagine most Daft Punk songs drumless, Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) should pique interest in fans wanting to delve deeper into the layers of the band’s compositions. Pre-orders are ongoing now before the album is out in full November 17th.
See the artwork and tracklist for Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) below.

Daft Punk have unveiled the 10th anniversary reissue of their final album, Random Access Memories. Featuring nine previously-unreleased tracks — totaling 35 minutes of new music — the release offers a unique glimpse into the French duo’s creative process, and pays homage to the celebrated, 2x album that marked the end of their run.
The duo also unveiled a video for the new track “Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo),” featuring Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, which they note will be their final music video. Watch it below.
“Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)” was recorded during the initial sessions for Random Access Memories at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Built around a literal loop, the song (and its animated video) allude to the confluence of humanity and technology, a theme present throughout the album. “It’s lovely and bizarre, like a human,” Casablancas said in a statement. “And, like a human,...

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star Simu Liu is known for his star-studded acting career, his extensive stock photo modeling, his amazing humour, but a lesser-known talent of the star is his musical prowess.
As we celebrate, Asian Heritage Month, we take a look at the 34-year-old’s roots in music that stretch all the way back to his childhood.
How It Started
Liu’s musical origins stretch all the way back to his teen years, when he joined the short-lived high school group LX4.
“I was a part of a boy band when I was 12. I mean, nothing ever happened. It was called LX4 because all of our names started with L,” he later recalled to “Q'”s Tom Power in 2023.

Just when we thought we’d heard the last of Daft Punk, the French funk duo are gifting us with nine unreleased tracks.
The new songs will feature on a new edition of 2013’s Random Access Memories to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
The Grammy winning album was originally released in 2013 and included tracks including “Get Lucky”, “Lose Yourself to Dance” and “Instant Crush”.
The album also features collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas.
The duo, made up of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – who always appear under the guise of helmets – announced the end of the band in 2021.
At the time, the pair revealed the news in an eight-minute video titled “Epilogue” on their YouTube channel. The clip is an excerpt from their 2006 science-fiction film Electroma.
Random Access Memories was their last full album release before their split after nearly 30 years of making music together.

The Masked Singer is back on our screens, turning the nation into at-home detectives as they try to figure out who this year’s celebrity contestants are.
The singing competition series, in which celebrities compete anonymously behind giant anthropomorphic costumes, returned on New Year’s Day, with the first group of contestants all performing.
Among the group was Phoenix, who was shown in their Vt standing within a grand castle and explaining in a posh accent that “I am rather hot, aren’t I?”
“Fire” by Kasabian then played as Phoenix said that they had risen from the ashes and been “born anew” and “reincarnated”.
They also said that they were good with “mysteries” and “following a trail”, while Phoenix was shown inspecting foot prints with a magnifying glass.
Phoenix’s first performance was a jazz version of “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. While performing, they sang with an American accent.

Who’ll win Song of the Year at the 2023 Grammys? This award goes strictly to the songwriters of the year’s best composition. That makes it different from Record of the Year, which goes to the artists, producers, and engineers. Scroll down for our official odds, which have been calculated based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The odds will keep changing, so we’ll be updating this list as the year progresses.
SEE2023 Grammy predictions: Album of the Year
For most of Grammy history there were five nomination slots in this category. From 2019 to 2021, it was expanded to eight nominees, as were Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. And in 2022 the top four categories were expanded again to 10 slots. But that wasn’t the only recent shakeup. After prolonged controversy over the voting system, the Grammys eliminated nomination review committees in almost all categories.

Noomi Rapace and Nicholas Pinnock are joining Matthias Schoenaerts in the star cast of “Django,” an English-language reimagining of Sergio Corbucci’s classic 1966 Western. Set in the Wild West of the 1860s and ’70s, the project marks one of the biggest high-end European series of 2021.
Star of “Prometheus,” “Sherlock Holmes” and “What Happened to Monday,” Sweden’s Rapace will play Elizabeth, who is described as a powerful and merciless enemy of John Ellis. Along with his fiancee Sarah, John Ellis is the founder of New Babylon, a city of outcasts which welcomes everyone from any background, race or creed.
British actor Pinnock — whose credits include movies such as “The Last Tree” and “Dark Encounter” as well as popular TV dramas “Counterpart,”“Fortitude,” “Marcella and “For Life” — takes the key role of John Ellis. Schoenaerts (“Bullhead”) plays the titular role of Django.

The Grammys don’t have a very good track record when it comes to honoring rap music in general field categories. Though the genre has come to dominate the charts, there wasn’t a single hip-hop winner for Record of the Year until “This is America” by Childish Gambino in 2019. Could “Savage (Remix)” by Megan Thee Stallion and Beyonce be the second just two years later?
According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa is the front-runner with leading odds of 9/2. Daft Punk, the masked and highly influential Edm duo, has signaled its retirement in an announcement as enigmatic as the rest of the pair’s three-decade career.
In a stark, new eight-minute video called “Epilogue,” posted today (watch it above), Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, maintaining their robot/racing personas, walk toward one another through a purple-sky desert. After standing helmet-to-helmet for a bit, one pushes a button on the other’s power pack, setting off a countdown alarm. They separate and prepare for self-destruction. The dates “1993-2021” then appear.
Publicist Kathryn Frazier has confirmed the split but provided no details.
The video ends with the song “Touch” from Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning 2013 album Random Access Memories.
Daft Punk’s hits include 2013’s “Get Lucky,” as well as “Da Funk” and “Robot Rock.” The duo recorded the the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album in 2010.

The Grammy Award for Record of the Year is the top award to honor an artist’s performance, along with the production and mixing behind a song, as well as to cement that song into music history. This year we have an eclectic mix of record-breaking hits, acclaimed gems, and politically relevant songs that are all vying for their place in Grammy history. Let’s dive in.
A double nominee here for the first time in her career (and the first time ever for any female artist), Beyoncé has the chance to win for her powerful “Black Parade” (also nominated in Song of the Year), as well as her smash hit “Savage” along with Best New Artist front-runner Megan Thee Stallion. Out of the two, “Savage” could have the advantage; it’s a much bigger hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100, which always helps (most Record winners are commercial hits), and...

SEE2021 Gold Derby Music Awards nominations: Lady Gaga leads with 8, followed by The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Fiona Apple
1. “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd — 4/1 odds
It spent four weeks at number-one, but more impressive than that is its longevity. It spent longer in the top five of Billboard’s Hot 100 than any other song in history, and also spent more time in the top 10 than any other song. The Weeknd also earned a previous nomination in this category for “Can’t Feel My Face” (2016), so this song is as close to...

Exclusive: Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas is going back to his local band member roots with Get Lucky, a drama project, which has landed at NBC with a put pilot commitment.
Written by Thomas, in Get Lucky, for the popular wedding band Get Lucky, every week there’s a new to gig play, a new love story, and a new chance to experience a sweaty, giddy, nearly forgotten feeling of togetherness. For six single musicians who are themselves looking for love, what does it mean to get lucky in a post-pandemic world?
Thomas executive produces via his Spondoolie Productions alongside frequent collaborator Dan Etheridge. Rebecca Franko (iZombie) serves as a producer. The project hails from Spondoolie Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television where the company has been based for years.
Thomas and Etheridge previously co-created another series about a sextet of mostly single people working events, including weddings, the cult Starz comedy Party Down,...

Artist collaborations have become so common in music that most of the songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 2020 have been team-ups. But despite musicians trading verses every which way, it’s rare for one artist to have multiple nominations for Record of the Year in the same year. But there are so many combos in the current race that we could potentially see a few repeats.
SEEGrammys 2021: Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Post Malone and more could rise in pop performance categories
The only artist to show up twice in the same year to date was Pharrell Williams, who won as a featured artist on Daft Punk‘s “Get Lucky” in 2014 and was also nominated that year as a featured artist on Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines.” This contest has many more double-dippers than that, starting with Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber. They could be nominated...

As we get closer to the 2021 Grammy Awards nominations (date yet to be announced), we should take a closer look at the race for Record of the Year, which is stacked with possibilities. This category honors individual songs, with the prize going to the artists, producers and engineers. Let’s see which hits are primed for some glory.

As with Album of the Year, the Record of the Year conversation seems to be set on The Weeknd for his smash hit “Blinding Lights.” The song would not only be The Weeknd’s first general field win, it would also give superstar producer Max Martin his first general win too after working on some of the biggest hits of the last 25 years. The song dominated the Billboard Hot 100 and was acclaimed upon release. However, it...

While the pandemic may have thrust fiscal insecurity onto entire global industries, the music business has seen barely a week go by without seven or eight figures being splashed on a prized catalog. Most often, the player has been Merck Mercuriadis’s UK-based Hipgnosis Songs Fund, which recently acquired pieces of RZA, Blondie, No I.D, and Barry Manilow’s catalogs.
But there’s another modern music company eyeing huge buys — and it’s already nailed down two monster deals of over $100 million in 2020.
That would be Nashville-based records and publishing company Concord.

Sunday marks Bono’s 60th birthday, and to celebrate the U2 singer has unveiled his “60 Songs That Saved My Life” playlist.
“These are some of the songs that saved my life,’ Bono wrote of the playlist. “The ones I couldn’t have lived without… the ones that got me from there to here, zero to 60… through all the scrapes, all manner of nuisance, from the serious to the silly… and the joy, mostly joy.'”
Bono also penned a “fan letter” of gratitude to each of the artists included on his playlist,...
