Jansdorf's new village curate Benedikt Hofmann seems suspiciously focused on intimately and elaborately 'comforting' lonely female parishioners, like Amelie Schneider, whose doted but cardiac husband Robert's fatal fruit tree fall on their anniversary crushed her. Daughter Louisa 'Lou', a Berlin student and party guest, whose workaholic fiance Andi gives law firm business priority even to her fertility cycle high-points, is openly suspicious of the unshakable priest, but powerless. Lou must make the funerary arrangements as Amelie can't face anyone, except the seductive priest, who also fancies wheelchair-ridden Georg Quirrenbeck's devoted wife Irmela, who feels reduced to his private nurse. Driving home, Lou picked up and found comfort with hitchhiking tramp Gilbert, self-reliant son of thieving whore Lydia Kalinke, and offered him temporary lodging in the parental garden shed, where they became lovers.
