On May 31, 2014, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, 12-year-olds Anissa E. Weier and Morgan E. Geyser lured their friend Payton Leutner into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in an attempt to impress the fictional character Slender Man. This movie uses this case as a basis for the Mercy Black character.
