Despite being one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Selena Gomez has said she’s always had a connection with independent film, and that her new film “Emilia Perez” is “just the beginning of what I feel I can do.” Speaking at the IndieWire Honors ceremony in Hollywood on Thursday, December 5, Gomez thanked some of the indie auteurs who have helped shape her career as an actress.
Gomez said she’s been drawn to independent film and said that they’re movies that “left me feeling unsettled, sometimes in the best way.”
“Supporting independent filmmakers is extremely important, not only because it’s vital to the future of storytelling, but I believe these films are truly the historical records of the times,” Gomez told the crowd. “Where we are with politics, pop culture, and humanity, I am proud to stand alongside so many talented people who continue to...

It could be any day, any night, any city, and Bill Murray could be there. Maybe this sad clown folk hero is hitting karaoke night or doing a frat’s dishes or crashing a kickball game or bartending at some random joint or giving a speech at a bachelor party or popping in for a wedding photo shoot. Bill Murray is that “fun” uncle, the loose one with no clear direction yet always grounded in…well, whatever he wants. Maybe he’ll show up, maybe he won’t. Maybe he’ll have a job this year, maybe he won’t bother. Maybe he’ll sock a male co-worker on the nose, maybe he’ll direct misconduct at a woman. Bill Murray is one unpredictable dude, his actions described as erupting “a trail of hysteria,” the man himself as “The Murricane.” Oh, and he’s made some of the greatest comedies,...

Not every child actor story turns out to be a tragedy. The Disney Channel child star to super rich adult pipeline is real, and Selena Gomez is the latest star to take it to new heights, according to a fresh report from Bloomberg. The "Only Murders in the Building" star is officially a billionaire, with a net worth of $1.3 billion dollars, but most of that money didn't come from her acting and musical career.
According to the outlet, Gomez has made her millions via a combination of acting, singing, brand partnerships, a mental health startup, and -- most importantly -- a mega-successful makeup line called Rare Beauty Brands. So, what does reportedly being richer than Zendaya or Miley Cyrus mean for the actor who first got her start on Disney's fantasy family comedy show "Wizards of Waverly Place"? Well, she can basically do whatever she wants in Hollywood.

At this time last year, picketers were walking outside of studio gates, still two months away from resolving Hollywood’s dual strikes. Of the big festivals, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), with its focus on star-heavy independent projects, was hardest hit by the labor action, with empty red carpets turning much-hyped premieres into damp squibs. Heading into TIFF this year, Hollywood is contending with less uncertainty (M&a and cost-cutting aside) and release calendars have fewer holes as strike-halted productions have started to roll out again, all of which should be good news for dealmakers headed to TIFF.
“I think you’re going to see things moving relatively quickly, especially given the languid pace that has pervaded film festival markets since Covid,” says Kent Sanderson of Bleecker Street, who is bringing three titles to the fest while looking for new acquisitions. “If anything is going to slow the pace of film sales,...

On July 14, Universal Pictures’ marketing team was entering the final stretch of its campaign for summer hit “Twisters” — and then it captured lightning in a bottle.
Amid a grueling day of back-to-back interviews, Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays the film’s heroine, grabbed her co-stars Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos and taught them the Charli Xcx “Apple” dance. Sensing that something special was unfolding, the actress summoned a cameraman to record the action and uploaded a clip to her Instagram account. The trio’s dance on the Burbank lot went viral. Edgar-Jones’ post garnered nearly 10 million views, while Ramos’ TikTok version topped 18 million. Even the “Apple” singer, who is unaffiliated with the movie, reposted the “Twisters” stars’ moves. Unlike most marketing endeavors, this one wasn’t concocted by a team of studio executives. It was one of many “Twisters” moments devised by the lead actress alone.

Jacques Audiard returned to his stomping grounds at the Cannes Film Festival last weekend to present Emilia Perez, the French auteur’s 10th work and sixth in the main competition. The audience inside the Grand Lumiére Theatre responded with a 10-minute standing ovation after the world premiere of the film, described as a “bracingly original crime musical.”
Emilia Perez stars Zoe Saldaña as a frustrated lawyer, Selena Gomez as a drug lord’s wife, Édgar Ramírez as a dangerous love interest and Karla Sofía Gascón as the cartel kingpin who longs to escape a life of crime and become the woman he’s always dreamed of becoming. Most of the cast was in tears during the rousing standing ovation, and less than 24 hours later, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with three of them — Saldaña, Gomez and Gascón — to discuss the reception, how they landed their respective roles and what they...

“Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language musical drama starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, has earned the biggest standing ovation of this year’s Cannes Film Festival so far.
Gomez wiped away tears as the Palais clapped for a full nine minutes, accompanied by plenty of hooting, whistling and cheering. During the standing ovation, director Jacques Audiard waved his hat at the balcony as stars Saldaña and Édgar Ramírez shared an emotional hug. There was huge applause for Gascón, who stars in the film as a drug cartel leader who seeks gender-affirming surgery.
In the film, from Palme d’Or winner Audiard, Saldaña stars as Rita, an “overqualified and undervalued” lawyer, whose firm is more inclined to help criminals than seek justice. She finds an unexpected way out when a feared drug cartel leader Manitas (Gascón) recruits her to aid him in surreptitiously completing a sex change operation to...

Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Balik, and more have joined Cate Blanchett in the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Father Mother Sister Brother.
Per Variety, the film recently wrapped production in Paris after previous shoots in Dublin and New Jersey, and will be completed later this year. In addition to Driver, Waits, and Balik, Vicky Krieps, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat have also joined the cast.

Sony Pictures Classics announced on Wednesday that it will release Nathan Silver’s acclaimed comedy Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die), in theaters nationwide on August 23.
The film will open against Zoë Kravitz’s debut feature Blink Twice (Amazon MGM Studios), the animated pic 200% Wolf (Viva Pictures), the remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgärd (Lionsgate), and the drama The Forge from Affirm Films.
Slated to make its New York debut at Tribeca in June, after playing both Sundance and Berlin to great reviews, Between the Temples follows Ben (Schwartzman), a forty-something cantor losing his voice and possibly his faith. Struggling to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers (Caroline Aaron and Dolly de Leon), Ben finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student.

The Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg-produced World War II series Masters of the Air has something that its predecessors did not: a bona fide movie star in the lead role. Thanks to his award-winning role as the King himself in 2022’s Elvis, Austin Butler has burst onto the scene as a major acting force. And he brings that gravitas with him to portray Gale “Buck” Cleven in the nine-episode Apple TV+ series about WWII bomber pilots.
Cleven is the perfect role for the brooding Butler – a quiet, confident figure that the rest of his crew looks up to. Cleven also serves as the culmination of years of work for the actor just as much as the Elvis Presley gig did. As a teen, Butler made the Disney and Nickelodeon TV show circuit via a mix of one-off and recurring roles on Zoey 101, Hannah Montana, iCarly, Wizards of Waverly Place,...

While watching Fallen Leaves, I realized that most romantic movies don’t really bother about the world, society, and everything that’s happening other than the central romance. Not that they have to, and it’s not at all mandatory. However, Fallen Leaves is helmed by the legendary Aki Kaurismäki, who has been making a very particular kind of film where you get to see the struggle that the working class of Helsinki goes through in a very minimalistic, deadpan style. In Kaurismäki’s films, the camera doesn’t usually move. The people move away from the screen, and sometimes you only get to hear the consequences. The stories are told in a very casual, absolutely non-blockbuster fashion. Yet, the impact is felt throughout, and more often than not, these films are very relatable. Like most Kaurismäki films, the characters in Fallen Leaves are also the kind of people you...

Fallen Leaves is a romantic comedy from Finland, with the driest of humor. Bone-dry does not cover it; this is a Sahara Desert of dry humor. No one cracks a smile and no one winks at the audience as they deadpan their satiric comedy lines. This is also the bad-luck couple of the year, who can’t seem to catch a break, except through the most absurd of coincidence. Fallen Leaves is undeniably funny, in it deadpan Nordic way but you have to meet the humor on its own terms. It is not there to help you.
If all that sounds good to you, dive in. Personally I like Nordic humor and I appreciate the film’s touches of social commentary in its absurdist humor, but it is not for everyone.
In Helsinki, two lonely people meet by chance.

Aki Kaurismäki’s 20th film keeps his signature humor and style. Fallen Leaves, starring Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen as lonely, meant-to-be lovers, finds the Finnish director at one of the peaks of his career, with his most recent film coming six years ago. In that time, the world has missed the droll comedy, dry warmth, and simplicity of Kaurismäki.
Fallen Leaves features everything one might want from a romcom in 2023: a cute dog, a one-liner about Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die, and a singular karaoke scene in which neither of the main characters get on stage. Both Pöysti and Vatanen are wonderful, each of their characters existing in a state of hyperextended loneliness, finding one another through initial circumstance, then thrust together even when everything else seems intent on keeping them apart. Ansa (Pöysti) and Holappa (Vatanen), in many ways, need one another. Their lives are...

The following post contains spoilers about "Killers of the Flower Moon."
The horrors inflicted upon the Osage people during a string of ghastly murders throughout the 1920s are among the worst atrocities ever committed against Indigenous Americans. Anyone familiar with U.S. history during the Old West will know that's saying a lot. Based upon the 2017 book by David Grann, director Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" uncovers the systematic infiltration of nefarious white men into the lives and affairs of the Indigenous Osage Nation after vast deposits of oil were found on their land. The enormous wealth the Osage possessed led to a string of mysterious deaths that were always deemed accidental or never investigated in the first place.
As the murders piled up, men like Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Bill Smith (Jason Isbell) married into Osage families and waited patiently for their share of the...

"The windshield wiper blade starts to squeak. The rain has stopped." Don't forget your seatbelt. Enjoy this mesmerizing supercut video featuring "Adam Driver Driving". Edited by the talented Luís Azevedo, this supercut was released by Little White Lies and is meant to be a tie-in with the upcoming release of Ferrari. Believe it or not, 39-year-old actor Adam Driver has been in tons of films where he's driving. This features footage from: "Girls", White Noise, The Dead Don't Die, House of Gucci, This Is Where I Leave You, Logan Lucky, Paterson, While We're Young, and BlacKkKlansman. I love that he includes one of his poems from Paterson (one of my all-time faves) and the way he integrates the back-and-forth Gucci convo. Hilarious. Another great supercut from Azevedo, always editing some of the best cinema videos on YouTube nowadays. // Continue Reading ›...

Records don’t last long: There was a bittersweet feeling after UK producer trade body Pact’s Census 2022 press briefing on Tuesday. Spotlighting full-year 2022, the briefing showed how the UK TV production sector hit record highs of nearly £4B ($5B) last year, driven by the streamers, who upped spend by a whopping 133% to £700M. Big hits to land included Heartstopper and The Crown Season 5. Multiple records were broken in a year in which the UK TV industry was virtually at full employment, but, during the briefing, most questions to Pact CEO John McVay focused on the here and now, as things feel very different today for many producers. McVay was honest in his assessment of 2023 and years to come,...

“I hope that you find solutions for everybody involved,” Almodóvar said during his acceptance speech.
Such were the words of Oscar winner Pedro Almodóvar at tonight’s TIFF Tribute Awards in a year when many actors couldn’t make the trip to Toronto due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The Spanish filmmaker was at the fest to pick up the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media. His cowboy short, Strange Way of Life, starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, which made its world premiere at Cannes, also made its debut at TIFF. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the short in theaters.

Jim Jarmusch has undoubtedly been the most visible peripheral filmmaker of the last thirty years. Since his jagged rise to fame in the mid-1980s, he has worked with some of the most entrenched actors, actresses, producers, and distributors in Hollywood without ever becoming part of the establishment himself. Now, at the age of 70, his primary occupation is that of frontman for the “enthusiastically marginal rock band,” SQÜRL, which he formed with producer Carter Logan in 2009. “The film industry is kind of gone,” Jarmusch told the Guardian earlier this year. “It sucks.”
Last week, in an interview with Believer Magazine, Jarmusch reiterated that sentiment and expressed his indifference to some of cinema’s most beloved and successful films. “I will never see any Star Wars films, because I resent that I know so much about them and the characters. Why is all that in my head when I’ve never actually seen one,...

Los Angeles, July 24 (Ians) It is comfort over everything for singer-actress Selena Gomez as she chose to ditch the towering heels after an intimate dinner to celebrate her 31st birthday.
She wore an all-pink outfit for a birthday dinner with her family and friends, the singer/actress went barefoot when leaving a West Hollywood restaurant, reports aceshowbiz.com.
The ‘Wolves’ songstress donned a vibrant, hot pink minidress with a halter-style top for the intimate dinner at the membership-based restaraunt. She added a feathery scarf that was wrapped around her neck for a fun touch to the look.
While she added inches to her height with a pair of nude-coloured heels, Selena was seen removing her heels when exiting the restaurant.
She carried the shoes in her hands as she strolled to an awaiting vehicle outside.

The first time Jim Jarmusch came to Cannes was with his sophomore film Stranger Than Paradise, which played the Quinzaine in 1984. “We all shared one apartment that had no hot water, that was up the hill,” he recalls. “One day I had to be on TV and there was no water, so I had to shave with leftover tea.” Those days are long gone; Jarmusch is a fixture on the Croisette these days, and even had the dubious pleasure of opening it in 2019 with his Bill Murray-starring zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die.
This year he arrived at the festival with a piece for Cannes Classics called The Return to Reason, a work-in-progress restoration of four films by American artist Man Ray shot in Paris during the early 1920s. Featuring a live soundtrack by SQÜRL, the band Jarmusch formed with Carter Logan in 2009, it is essentially a concert movie...

To judge by Aki Kaurismäki’s typically wry and winsome “Fallen Leaves,” the Finnish auteur’s first movie since threatening to retire after “The Other Side of Hope” came out 2017, only two things have any significant importance have happened in the world over the last six years.
The first and most pressing of those is the war in Ukraine, which bleeds into Ansa’s (Alma Pöysti) already depressing kitchen every time the supermarket cashier dares to turn on her radio after work. Listening to news of the latest atrocity in Kyiv is the only thing worse than eating her microwaved dinner in the complete silence Ansa settles for when she can’t find anything more comforting on the airwaves. She doesn’t need any further evidence of the darkness outside her window, thank you very much.
The other major historical milestone since 2017 was obviously the release of Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don’t Die,...

Aki Kaurismäki, the deadpan cockeyed minimalist of Finland, has become the ultimate illustration of the principle that if you make movies in the same mood and style, with the same monosyllabic bombed-out hipster vibe, for a period of 30 years, your movies may not have changed — but the world around them has, so the films will have a totally different effect.
In “Fallen Leaves,” the Kaurismäki bauble that’s showing at Cannes this year, there’s actually a scene in which a character uses a computer. The film’s heroine, Ansa (Alma Pöysti), loses her job as a supermarket worker, and to find another gig she rents an Hp laptop at a makeshift Internet café that charges 10 Euro for half an hour. Apart from that, the movie unfolds in that scruffy and sparsely decorated so-familiar-it’s-cozy pre-tech Kaurismäki zone, where people still use electric adding machines or listen to a bulky...

Jim Jarmusch hopes his latest project — a soundtrack composed with his SQÜRL bandmate Carter Logan for a new restoration of Man Ray silent films — induces in viewers a “psilocybin-inspired” experience.
The “Only Lovers Left Alive” and “Stranger Than Paradise” filmmaker and musician, along with Logan, spoke exclusively with IndieWire about the screening of four early-1900s black-and-white shorts from Dadaist pioneer Man Ray hitting Cannes Classics tonight: “Return to Reason,” “Emak-Bakia,” “The Starfish,” and “The Mysteries of the Chateau of Dice.”
Together, Jarmusch and Logan improvised an original score, a tripped-out sonic soup of distorted guitars and loopy feedback, now recorded to accompany the films. The quartet of shorts holds up a distorted mirror to human sexuality as Jarmusch and Logan’s eerie music envelops the Freudian dreamscape — and while you might be tempted to drop a tab of acid or mushroom cap or two for the viewing, Jarmusch says that’s not necessary,...

Finnish actors Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen have been making names for each other for a while now. But playing leads in Aki Kaurismäki’s latest film, “Fallen Leaves,” was a whole different story.
“He has always been that household name, even when I was growing up on a farm in the 1980s, kicking a ball against our cowhouse. It’s crazy that now, we are here together. Also, he is really just a regular guy. Funny and he actually talks a lot,” Vatanen tells Variety in Cannes.
A household name himself thanks to the “Lapland Odyssey” franchise, he has been exploring dramatic roles in “Forest Giant” or “The Man Who Died.”
“As a Finn, you are very, very familiar with his style. We have seen all his movies and it’s just in our blood, I guess. I actually thought that [entering this universe] was quite easy.”

Humor, it seems, has returned to the Main Competition at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. After a few days of mostly serious dramas about Nazis and terrorists and sweatshops, a lighter touch has emerged from a couple of expected sources: first Todd Haynes, a filmmaker with a great range but also a real touch for pulpy material that he shows in “May December,” and now Aki Kaurismäki, the Finnish master of comedy so deadpan that it can take an audience half the movie to figure out that it’s Ok to laugh.
They figured it out when Kaurismaki’s “Fallen Leaves” premiered in Cannes on Monday. With a brisk one-hour-and-21-minute running time, the film is a wry delight whose very restraint is part of the joke. Jonathan Glazer’s Cannes standout “The Zone of Interest” might be a movie without a single closeup, but “Fallen Leaves” is pretty much a...
