The film was originally slated for January 10, 2020 before being delayed following the deadly arson fire at Kyoto Animation studio. The film was set for an April release but delayed again due to COVID-19.
Taichi Ishidate was not interested in doing a sequel film, feeling he had completed the story he wanted to tell in the series. He became convinced after reading Reiko Yoshida's screenplay.
