Doctor Who TV movie writer Matthew Jacobs has reunited with Paul McGann for a new Big Finish audio story.

To date, Paul McGann’s total screen time as the Doctor clocks in at under two hours, and the majority of that can be credited to screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who penned the 1996 TV Movie. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returned on Thursday morning with a thrilling flashback, lots of deception, and a problematic partnership. Let’s recap just the first of the three new episodes, now streaming on Prime Video.

As Season 2 opens, Sauron (played by Charlie Vickers) addresses his hordes at Forodwaith. Exclusive: Wolf Creek director Greg McLean will write and direct The First Exorcist, a supernatural thriller out of Australia.

McLean’s Emu Creek Pictures is collaborating with Mark Fennessy’s Helium to make the pic, we can reveal. Production is set for Victoria, Australia, with a 2025 shoot date planned. Casting will follow.

The First Exorcist is billed as a “spellbinding fusion of religious and supernatural events set in Biblical times,” in which a mother goes on a harrowing quest to save her daughter from demonic possession. Plot reads: “As their lives descend into a nightmare, the mother learns of a mysterious healer with the power to expel demons, and embarks on a dangerous race against time – encountering hostile Roman authorities on her perilous mission to find the healer and save her daughter’s life.”

The plan is to use cutting edge virtual production tech in Victoria to bring epic ancient cities and locations to life.

“Vikings” star Travis Fimmel reprises his role as Detective Cormack in a second season of Australian mystery drama series “Black Snow.” The six-part series is now shooting in Queensland, Australia, and has unveiled first-look images.

“Australian film and television have never been stronger. Now, with the addition of streaming networks and their reach, I’m so proud that our local productions and their hard work can be recognized not only here, but around the world,” said Fimmel in a prepared statement.

The first season of “Black Snow” was nominated as ‘most outstanding drama series’ at the 2023 Logie Awards and received two nominations at the 2024 Aacta Awards – for best drama series and best lead actor in a drama, for Fimmel. It sold to all major international territories including the U.S., where it screened on AMC Networks’ streamer Sundance Now. “Black Snow” also won the Screen Business Export Award at the recent Australian Screen Producer Awards.

“Gangs of London” has officially started production on Season 3, with Sky and AMC+ revealing the director and writer of the show’s next installment.

South Korea’s Kim Hong Sun (“Project Wolf Hunting”) will direct and executive produce the upcoming eight-episode season, with Peter McKenna (“Kin”) serving as lead writer and executive producer. Kim’s most recent film, the action horror “Project Wolf Hunting,” premiered in Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section last year. Kim has also directed “Metamorphosis” (2019) and “Traffickers” (2012), both of which have contributed to the surge in popularity of horror-based cinema in Korea. McKenna is the creator and showrunner of AMC+ and Rte drama “Kin,” starring Charlie Cox, Clare Dunne, Aidan Gillen and Ciaran Hinds. Former Disney+ executive Johanna Devereaux is joining AppleTV+’s development team in Europe led by creative director Jay Hunt, known for greenlighting series including “Slow Horses,” “Hijack” and “Bad Sisters.”

Devereaux, who will be based in London, most recently served as vice president of scripted content and diversity, equity and inclusion strategy for Disney+’s Europe, Middle East and Africa division.

Disney+ UK scripted exec Johanna Devereaux has swapped the Mouse House for Apple TV+.

Devereaux, who was VP of Scripted Content and DE&I Strategy and has been a driving force behind Disney+’s scripted content outside the U.S., will join Apple TV+ Europe boss Jay Hunt’s scripted development team.

She will work in a drama team that has greenlit hits such as Slow Horses, Hijack and Bad Sisters.

At Disney, she had a hand in the launch of 34 originals including the likes of Extraordinary, Wedding Season and The Good Mothers. She worked in Liam Keelan’s team and closely with fellow scripted exec Lee Mason, the former It’s a Sin commissioner, while also overseeing the streamer’s Emea inclusion policy.

Mega Merger

The proposed merger between Indian powerhouse Zee Entertainment Enterprises and Sony‘s Indian TV businesses, which has been nearly two years in the making, is likely to be delayed further, Sony said in a filing on Friday. The companies cleared a key regulatory hurdle in August, but there are other matters pending, especially that of leadership. The original plan had foreseen that Zee’s CEO Punit Goenka would be its captain, while Sony would own a 51% controlling stake. However, Goenka was banned from managing any listed company in India following an interim regulatory report that accused him and Zee founder Subhash Chandra of running the company for their own benefit and “siphoning off” money.

Goenka appealed the decision with India’s Securities Appellate Tribunal, who heard his plea on Wednesday but has reserved a verdict for at least a week.

Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the official trailer for Black Snow, a new six-part series premiering on February 23, 2023. Described as part whodunit and part coming-of-age drama, Black Snow stars Travis Fimmel as a cold-case detective investigating a murder.

In addition to unveiling the official trailer, AMC+ and Sundance Now released a batch of photos ahead of the show’s two-episode premiere.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Fimmel described why Black Snow caught his interest.

“What intrigued me about him is that he’s a very flawed character. He’s got a lot of issues, childhood issues that he’s still dealing with, parental figures, and I think that’s the reason he became a cold-case detective,” said Fimmel. “There’s some stuff that unravels in the story that he went through that is very similar to the stuff that’s going on in the main storyline.

House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen and is set to debut this Sunday night on HBO Max.

The story will commence some 200 years prior to the events that unfolded in the network’s original series, Game of Thrones.

There, the Targaryens were almost a dead house with only Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow Aka Aegon Targaryen, the last remaining members of this family.

However, in House of the Dragon, House Targaryen is in its heyday. Ruled by King Viserys (Paddy Considine), the line of succession is set to be passed down to his daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Rhaenyra’s story will be told from two perspectives, as an adult (and being portrayed by Emma D-Arcy) and as a young teen (Milly Alcock).

The Heath Ledger Scholarship is awarded to an emerging Australian actor with extraordinary ability and dedication to their craft who wishes to work and train internationally. The scholarship has propelled many previous recipients into international careers, including Bella Heathcote (Pieces of Her), Cody Fern (American Horror Story), Ashleigh Cummings (Citadel), Mojean Aria (The Enforcer), and Charmaine Bingwa (The Good Fight).

Ledger died on January 22, 2008 as a result of an accidental overdose of medications. He had just finished filming his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Romahn most recently starred in the series Shantaram, as well as Mr InBetween andLittle Monsters. He was nominated for an Aacta and Logie award for his role in The Principal. He is based in Sydney and does not, as yet, have US representation.

Two animated children’s projects and two live-action series will share in $3.2 million of production funding from Screen Australia.

Northern Pictures’ Tom Weekly Versus… and Werner Film Productions’ Surviving Summer are being made for ViacomCBS and Netflix, respectively, while animation offerings 100% Wolf: The Book of Hath from Flying Bark Productions and Kangaroo Beach Summer Special from Cheeky Little Media will both appear on the ABC.

Screen Australia’s head of content Sally Caplan said the funding reflected Screen Australia’s commitment to supporting quality Australian screen stories for young audiences.

“It’s important that Australian kids can see their stories and experiences reflected on screen and families around the country will be in for a treat with these new projects,” she said.

“Northern Pictures are going from strength to strength – building on the success of Hardball, they are now set to bring popular book series Tom Weekly to the screen.

Nicole Chamoun will star opposite US actor Thomas Jane in ABC crime drama Troppo, with cameras now rolling in Queensland.

The streamer has added two more stars to the cast of the forthcoming prequel, House of the Dragon.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Milly Alcock is set to play a younger version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Described as “the king’s first-born child, she is of pure Valyrian blood, and she is a dragon rider. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything… but she was not born a man.”

The grown-up version of the character is played by Emma D’Arcy in the series.

Melbourne-based private film finance group Elevate Production Finance has hired Shana Levine as head of production investment.

Levine joins other recent recruits in London-based film financier and producer Charles Auty, who is COO, and Brisbane-based entertainment and finance lawyer Ted Cawrey, who is head of legal and business affairs.

Epf MD Craig McMahon said Levine’s appointment would now mean the company could provide “superior end-to-end service to productions”.

Set in the near future, at a time when electronic mass surveillance and a social credit system have entirely crippled personal freedom across the world, Proxy explores how psychological ‘surrogates’, titled Proxies, have now become the only reasonable option for anyone who can’t risk losing their wealth and liberty for undesirable behavior.

The serialised drama was created and will be written by Halil Ozsan (What Would Diplo Do?) and Dominick Joseph Luna, who wrote the short film that Banks directed during 2020.

Michael Gudinski, founder and chairman of the Mushroom Group, died overnight at home in Melbourne. He was 68.

One of the key figures in the Australian music industry, Gudinski started Mushroom Records in 1972 at just 20 years old.

Over the decades, the label worked with some the biggest names in Australian music, such as Jimmy Barnes, Kylie Minogue, Archie Roach, Hunters & Collectors, Paul Kelly, The Angels and Yothu Yindi.

The Mushroom Group also grew to become an entertainment empire, with brands across touring, record labels, publishing, merchandising, booking agencies, film and television production and creative services.

Mushroom Pictures, its production and distribution arm, was formed in 1993.

Gudinski was the executive producer on feature films such as Chopper, Horseplay, Gettin’ Square, Wolf Creek, Macbeth, Storm Warning, Cedar Boys, Mad Bastards, Killing Ground and Boys in the Trees, as well as Seven miniseries Molly.

Sunday’s installment of Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish’s travel series focuses on traditional Scottish music and dance, which are used for “celebration, battle and everything in between,” Heughan voiceovers near the top of the episode. And nothing screams “Scotland” like bagpipes, which we are informed are a mainstay of Highland dancing, marching bands and raucous gatherings known as ceilidhs (pronounced “kay-lees,” for those of you who haven’t been Diana Gabaldon’d).

Starz has acquired the US and Canadian rights to The Gloaming, with the eight-episode drama to premiere across each of the cable network’s platforms next month.

Filmed in Tasmania, The Gloaming stars Emma Booth and Ewen Leslie as two detectives with a tragic past that investigate a brutal murder.

In a journey to find the truth, their fate is coerced by the ghosts of the unsettled dead that linger in the liminal space between life and death — known as “The Gloaming.”

The series also features Martin Henderson (Grey’s Anatomy), Aaron Pedersen (Mystery Road), Rena Owen (The Orville), Josephine Blazier (True History of the Kelly Gang), and Matt Testro (Nowhere Boys).

Written and created by Victoria Madden, who also serves as showrunner, The Gloaming is a co-production between Sweet Potato Films and John Molloy’s 2 Johns Productions and ABC Signature, a division of Disney Television Studios.

Production begins this month on “Surviving Summer,” a teen-surfing drama series for Netflix and Zdf Enterprises. The show is produced by Werner Film Production, a three-time Emmy-nominated Australian firm headed by Joanna Werner.

Sky Katz (previously known as Skylar Katz) (Disney Channel’s “Raven’s Home”) stars as the titular character Summer, a fierce Brooklyn teen who is sent ‘Down Under’ to live with family friends in a coastal town on the Great Ocean Road. She stars alongside Brazilian rising star Joao Gabriel Marinho (“Malhacao”), Australia’s Kai Lewins (“Wild Boys”) and Savannah La Rain (“Content”). It also stars Lilliana Bowrey, a five-time Queensland junior state surf champion, making her first foray into acting.

The ten-part show will be shot at some of Australia’s most iconic surf beaches in Victoria.

British-New Zealand miniseries “The Luminaries” will get its stateside debut on Starz in February, the pay TV channel said Tuesday.

Starring Eve Hewson, Himesh Patel and Eva Green, “The Luminaries” will premiere Sunday, Feb. 14 at 9:30 p.m., following the debut of “Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham.”

Per Starz, “The Luminaries” tells an epic story of love, murder and revenge, as men and women travelled across the world to make their fortunes. It is a 19th century tale of adventure and mystery, set on the Wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island in the boom years of the 1860s gold rush.

Anousha Zarkesh and Nathan Lloyd each took home two gongs from the Casting Guild of Australia (Cga) Awards on Saturday, leading the night’s winners.

Bert and Amanda LABONTé hosted the ceremony, virtual this year due to Covid-19.

Lloyd snared Achievement in Casting for the second season of children’s series The InBestigators, as well as Best Casting in a TV drama for Wentworth.

Yet again, Zarkesh won Best Casting in a TV Comedy for the fourth season Black Comedy (she won last year for the third innings of the show), as well as Best Casting in a TV Miniseries & Telemovie for Operation Buffalo.

Following on from their Aacta win on Friday night, the feature film award went to Kirsty McGregor and Stevie Ray for Babyteeth, which stars Eliza Scanlen, Toby Wallace, Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn.

Best Casting in a Short Film went to Daniella Friedman for the Aacta nominated The Mirror.

The Casting Guild of Australia (Cga) has named its ten ‘Rising Stars’ for 2020: Luca Sardelis, Lily Sullivan, Yazeed Daher, Sophie Wilde, Ayesha Madon, Patrick Jhanur, Daniel Monks, Ratidzo Mambo, Thomas Weatherall and Bridie McKim.

The Australian Academy revealed the first round of nominees for the annual awards over the weekend, to be presented across two ‘reimagined’ events later this month.

Production is underway in Adelaide, South Australia, on seasonal comedy film “A Sunburnt Christmas.” The film is set as an original production for local streaming platform Stan.

Directed by Christiaan Van Vuuren (“Bondi Hipsters,” “The Other Guy”), the film is the story of a single mother struggling to raise her children on their family farm. Their hardscrabble life is interrupted by the arrival of a runaway criminal who smashes his way into their property and their lives.
