One of the more vaguely defined subcategories of the genre is survival horror, a term that originated from video games. After all, survival is the central goal of any character unlucky enough to find themselves in a horror movie. Survival horror has more to do with the environment than the main antagonistic threat; it features hostile environments and scarce resources.

It’s not just a lethal killer or creature that protagonists must battle, but environmental risks like dehydration, starvation, or exposure. Sometimes, there’s no extraneous threat at all, and death comes in the form of nature itself. Those who want to survive will have to think on their feet, adapting quickly to stave off unforgiving elements.

This week’s streaming picks highlight survival horror movies that see their characters battling against multiple threats in intense bids to outlive, outlast, and of course, ultimately survive.

The corpse of Halloween is barely cold, but studios are keen to announce holiday-themed projects nonetheless. Thankfully, this one sounds like one hell of a ride! Maria Bakalova is catching a ride alongside Peter Mullan for No Way Off, a Christmas Eve thriller from Downton Abbey director Brian Kelly. Kelly directs from a script by Gaby Hull, with James Wilkinson producing.

Akin to movies like The Shallows, Buried, and Crawl, No Way Off finds Bakalova in the role of Laura, “a young mother who waits at a bus stop with her infant son. When the bus pulls up, its driver is wearing a latex Santa mask. Laura climbs aboard, collapsing into her seat. Exhausted and stressed, she soon falls asleep. When Laura wakes, night has fallen. Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova and multi award-winning screen veteran Peter Mullan are set to star in No Way Off, a thriller about a young mother trapped on a bus with her baby after being abducted by its sinister driver.

Altitude will be seeking international partners to join the ride as they introduce the film at AFM this week in Las Vegas.

In celebration of the release, Lionsgate has provided us with an exclusive Deleted Scene from the film featuring star Halle Berry.

In the new psychological thriller/horror movie from Aja, as an evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times – even tethering themselves with ropes – they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go.

About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. A while back, C​ocaine Bear surprised everyone with its box office haul. For fans of animal attack movies, this is not a shock. People love animal attack films and can’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it’s the man vs. nature theme of the films, the animals themselves getting revenge on humans, or just the all-around fun these films bring. No matter what, they are enjoyable for audiences in theaters. T​here has been a long history of animals attacking humans on film. Some films that are classified as ‘classic’ cinema fall into the animal attack category. We can always use more movies of animals rampaging through humans on the big screen. What are some of the best animal attack movies?

S​ince bears seem to be on everyone’s brain this weekend; then we might as well start with this classic.

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear. 

What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

In the latest supernatural thriller from French filmmaker Alexandre Aja, Never Let Go, one mother must face the stark realities and consequences of protecting her children amongst the threats of starvation, isolation and possible death. Led by Halle Berry, the film centers around a single mother called “Momma,” who lives in a deeply secluded cabin in the woods with her two young boys (Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins) in what seems to be a post-apocalyptic world. It’s not often that Quentin Tarantino comments on new films, more or less for the reason that he doesn’t want to slam someone who is actively creating art. If he disses one, that could spell the end of that movie – and its director – before it had a chance. So when he does talk about a new release, it’s usually only positive. Paramount Pictures has done quite well with Hasbro’s flagship Transformers toy line, to the tune of $5.3 billion worldwide, mostly thanks to the five movies directed by Michael Bay. Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One, the first animated Transformers movie in close to 40 years, looks to liven up the mid-September box office with a domestic start in the low-$30Ms with potential for upside.

Transformers One will keep the domestic box office at its excellent clip. Through the last weekend of April, the domestic B.O. stood at $2.07 billion, 20% behind 2023. Since then, through last weekend, the domestic box office has made an additional $4 billion for a running Ytd cume of $6.08 billion, now 12% behind last year.

Advance ticket sales are solid from Thursday through Saturday, ahead of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ($28M 3-day) and Trolls Band Together ($30M).

Josh Cooley directed what has been described for months as one of Paramount’s highest-testing animated movies. The $75M production tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, who were buddies before becoming sworn enemies.

After playing around with genre in a more confined sandbox with Crawl and Oxygen, Never Let Go finds Alexandre Aja venturing back to terrain similar to that of 2003’s High Tension. As in that home invasion thriller, the remote setting in Never Let Go generates an oddly claustrophobic tension all its own, only here the home is a reliable place of safety. It’s a bastion in the woods that protects fraternal twins Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) from “the Evil” that lies outside their doorstep, and which could destroy them with a single touch. Or so their Momma (Halle Berry) tells them on a daily basis.

Momma demands that whenever her boys go outside, they tie a rope that’s connected to the home around their waists, allowing them to wander only so far into the surrounding woods. This symbolic umbilical cord imagery spells out...

Once upon a time, there was a filmmaker named Alexandre Aja. His career was fascinating in the way it wasn't strictly auteurist, for while every director has their unique stylistic tics and proclivities, not everyone has a distinctive, strong signature. Aja has certainly always been a genre filmmaker, one who's interested in subversion and twists, in playing around with the conventions of genre, and in being unafraid to use audience's sympathies against them. Whether it's been in the brutal, New French Extremity slashers of "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes," the gleefully exploitative "Piranha 3D," the literary roots of "Horns" and "The 9th Life of Louis Drax," or the suspense exercises of "Crawl" and "Oxygen," Aja has always found ways to surprise and upset (in every sense of the word) with his films.

All this is to say that, in the case of Aja's latest film, "Never Let Go,...

French director Alexandre Aja has been known as a member of the horror helming fraternity called the “Splat Pack,” named for the extreme violence in their films. Certainly, many of his pictures, from the 2003 breakthrough Haute Tension and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, to his exceptional, and most successful film to date, 2019’s Crawl — in which a family is trapped in the crawl space of their home as alligators surround them during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida (a personal favorite of Quentin Tarantino) — have proved his chops as a genre filmmaker. Now, he steps up to another level with a less gory and more psychological thriller style of film, Never Let Go, in which Halle Berry stars as a mother of twin boys who is traumatically haunted by her own lifelong demons, which she passes on to them in their remote house deep in the woods.

Survival thrillers are awesome. Be it the dark forests or the open seas, humans are the most vulnerable creatures out there, and it’s always thrilling to see them come to terms with the fact that they’re not exactly at the top of the food chain. The on-screen portrayal of this eternal battle between man and the wild has changed over the years. The birds that we see on the screen in The Birds were achieved via real birds, mechanical birds, and a ton of visual effects and special effects. Jaws used a mixture of stock footage and a shifty mechanical shark to inspire terror. Bart the Bear achieved iconic status with his appearance in The Edge. Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

After 26 years of making its players endure some of the most physically demanding competitions in reality television history, “The Challenge” is officially over the hill.

In honor of its milestone 40th season, MTV is bringing back a record-breaking 40 contestants to face off in “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras.”

Starting this Wednesday, the competitors will be evenly split into four eras depending on when they were introduced to the franchise — Era 1, Seasons 1-10; Era 2, Seasons 11-20; Era 3, Seasons 21-30; and Era 4, Seasons 31-39 — competing for their share of the $1 million prize.

The next film from director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Crawl), Never Let Go has received a new release date from Lionsgate this week.

Originally set for September 27, the film now arrives in theaters September 20, 2024.

Academy Award winner Halle Berry is leading the film’s cast.

Percy Daggs IV (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) and Anthony B. Jenkins (Florida Man) will star alongside Berry in Never Let Go. Check out the film’s official trailer below.

The upcoming Lionsgate horror film follows a mother (Berry) and her fraternal twin sons (Daggs and Jenkins) who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years and are convinced to never let go of their family’s protective bond. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, their connection is severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.

Exclusive: Lionsgate is moving up their Halle Berry starring, Alexandre Aja directed psychological horror movie Never Let Go from Sept. 27 to Sept. 20.

The move comes as Sony and Apple Studios ease back their release of George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s noir comedy Wolfs to a limited release. This allows Never Let Go to get extra play time ahead of Warner Bros.’ big October blockbuster, Joker: Folie à Deux which opens on Oct. 4.

Calling all horror fans, we need your attention! We have some very good news to share. This just in: a sequel to the 2019 box office hit Crawl is in the works at Paramount Pictures with French filmmaker Alexandre Aja back to direct. More on this upcoming horror film below.

Titled Crawl 2, the sequel is reportedly in development at Paramount, with Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and Project Almanac) writing the screenplay. As mentioned above, Aja, who directed and produced the first film, will helm the sequel. He will be producing alongside Craig Flores and Sam Raimi, who also produced the first movie. In addition, Gregory Levasseur and Zainab Azizi are signed as executive producers.

2019’s Crawl was an effective thriller in which Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper found themselves going head-to-head with some nasty alligators. The film scared up an impressive $91.5m at the box office on a budget of just $14m.

Talks about a sequel started almost right away, but the last we heard about any concrete plans was in 2021 when director Alexandre Aja talked about the possibility of returning to gator-infested waters with a brand new story and new characters.

It’s been 15 long years since Sam Raimi last helmed a film in the genre he knows best, but the filmmaker is now finally returning to the horror arena with a new project. After a few fumbled forays in the Disney big-budget machine, Raimi is now attached to direct the horror thriller Send Help.

Set up at 20th Century Studios, Deadline reports the tone of the two-hander set on a desert island falls “somewhere between Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Misery and Robert Zemeckis’ classic Castaway.” Scripted by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, a theatrical release is planned for the project.

"Never Let Go" is a new horror film from Alexandre Aja, director of the pretty good remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and the excellent killer alligator movie "Crawl." With his new feature, Aja seems to be channeling "A Quiet Place" crossed with a bit of the supernatural, resulting in this effective trailer. In "Never Let Go," Halle Berry plays a mother who is hiding out in the woods with her twin sons. According to Berry's character, these are post-apocalyptic times. Berry tells her sons that they'll be safe as long as they tether themselves to the secluded cabin where they're hiding out. But what's really going on here? And what's lurking out in the woods? I don't know. All I know is that the dog that shows up in the trailer better make it out alive.
