One of the more vaguely defined subcategories of the genre is survival horror, a term that originated from video games. After all, survival is the central goal of any character unlucky enough to find themselves in a horror movie. Survival horror has more to do with the environment than the main antagonistic threat; it features hostile environments and scarce resources.
It’s not just a lethal killer or creature that protagonists must battle, but environmental risks like dehydration, starvation, or exposure. Sometimes, there’s no extraneous threat at all, and death comes in the form of nature itself. Those who want to survive will have to think on their feet, adapting quickly to stave off unforgiving elements.
This week’s streaming picks highlight survival horror movies that see their characters battling against multiple threats in intense bids to outlive, outlast, and of course, ultimately survive.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Bodies Bodies Bodies lead Maria Bakalova is set to star alongside Peter Mullan (Baghead) in the single-location suspense thriller No Way Off, per Variety. The location? A bus that is driving into the middle of nowhere on Christmas Eve.
No Way Off, written by Gaby Hull, will be directed by Brian Kelly.
Bakalova will play Laura, a tired young mother traveling alone with her infant son on Christmas Eve. “When the bus pulls up, its driver is wearing a latex Santa mask. Laura climbs aboard, collapsing into her seat. Exhausted and stressed, she soon falls asleep. When Laura wakes, night has fallen. The bus is now hurtling along a motorway, miles off its usual route. Apart from the sleeping baby, she is the only passenger left on board. She can’t outrun the driver – she’ll have to outsmart him.“

Maria Bakalova is catching a ride alongside Peter Mullan for No Way Off, a Christmas Eve thriller from Downton Abbey director Brian Kelly. Kelly directs from a script by Gaby Hull, with James Wilkinson producing.
Akin to movies like The Shallows, Buried, and Crawl, No Way Off finds Bakalova in the role of Laura, “a young mother who waits at a bus stop with her infant son. About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. The finished film was given a theatrical release on September 20th (you can read our review Here)… and it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. It has only earned $21 million worldwide. Now it’s time for the movie to receive a PVOD release, so maybe it will be more successful when people are able to watch it in the comfort of their own homes. Lionsgate has announced they will be giving Never Let Go a Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through release on October 11th. A press release notes that the film “will be available to buy for $24.99 and to rent...

A while back, Cocaine Bear surprised everyone with its box office haul. For fans of animal attack movies, this is not a shock. People love animal attack films and can’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it’s the man vs. nature theme of the films, the animals themselves getting revenge on humans, or just the all-around fun these films bring. No matter what, they are enjoyable for audiences in theaters. There has been a long history of animals attacking humans on film. Some films that are classified as ‘classic’ cinema fall into the animal attack category. We can always use more movies of animals rampaging through humans on the big screen. What are some of the best animal attack movies?
Grizzly (1976)
Since bears seem to be on everyone’s brain this weekend; then we might as well start with this classic.

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear.
What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

The latest film from French horror director Alexandre Aja is an evil-in-the-woods mystery chiller that’s intent on keeping the audience guessing until the end. As such, it has its moments, thanks to strong performances by the two young leads, but it’s never as satisfying or as scary as it ought to be.
Never Let Go takes place in a remote wooden house in the forest, where Halle Berry’s Momma (the character is never named) is raising her two young, non-identical twin boys Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Samuel (Anthony B Jenkins), apparently in the wake of some apocalyptic event that has befallen the rest of the country. Accordingly, Momma tells the boys that if they leave the house, they must remain tied to it via a length of thick rope,...

In the latest supernatural thriller from French filmmaker Alexandre Aja, Never Let Go, one mother must face the stark realities and consequences of protecting her children amongst the threats of starvation, isolation and possible death. Led by Halle Berry, the film centers around a single mother called “Momma,” who lives in a deeply secluded cabin in the woods with her two young boys (Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins) in what seems to be a post-apocalyptic world. According to her, the family is all that is left of humanity, and a malevolent force awaits to kill them off each time they scavenge outside for food and supplies, unless they are tethered by a network of protective ropes that ward off the evil spirits. However, when their rations run dangerously low, the boys begin to question if their mom is telling the truth or if there is a functioning society...

It’s not often that Quentin Tarantino comments on new films, more or less for the reason that he doesn’t want to slam someone who is actively creating art. If he disses one, that could spell the end of that movie – and its director – before it had a chance. So when he does talk about a new release, it’s usually only positive. And that’s just what happened with Alexandre Aja’s killer alligator movie Crawl, which he didn’t just love but named one of his favorite movies of 2019.
That Tarantino loved Crawl was just the sort of boost Aja needed. As he told The Hollywood Reporter, “It was such a nice surprise. I was really, really excited. I’ve met with Quentin a few times, and one of the times, we had dinner together in Paris right before I was going to make Piranha 3D. So...

Since 2019, French filmmaker Alexandre Aja has received the best reviews of his career for a trio of genre films that include Crawl, Oxygen and his latest release, Never Let Go. Led by Halle Berry, the survival horror-thriller chronicles Berry’s single mother, “Momma,” as she looks after her fraternal twin boys in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world. The family resides in a remote cabin, and if they want to venture outside to find food and sustenance, they have to be tethered by rope so that an evil force can’t possess them in order to kill them off.
As expected, the Oscar-winning Berry gives yet another compelling performance, but arguably her most valuable contribution came as a producer. Knowing that the movie’s success hinged on whether they could find the right young actors to surround Momma, Berry insisted that the Never Let Go team leave no stone unturned en route...

We’re halfway through September, and while “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has been the big winner of the month so far, we have a new potential fall blockbuster this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Paramount Pictures has done quite well with Hasbro’s flagship Transformers toy line, to the tune of $5.3 billion worldwide, mostly thanks to the five movies directed by Michael Bay. Now, they’re returning to the animated realm that kicked the whole thing off in the ’80s with “Transformers One,” a prequel movie that explores the origins of the Autobots and Decepticons with Oscar-winning filmmaker Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”).
For this one, the filmmakers have put together a really impressive voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Keegan-Michael Key and Laurence Fishburne. Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One, the first animated Transformers movie in close to 40 years, looks to liven up the mid-September box office with a domestic start in the low-$30Ms with potential for upside.
Transformers One will keep the domestic box office at its excellent clip. Through the last weekend of April, the domestic B.O. stood at $2.07 billion, 20% behind 2023. Since then, through last weekend, the domestic box office has made an additional $4 billion for a running Ytd cume of $6.08 billion, now 12% behind last year.
Advance ticket sales are solid from Thursday through Saturday, ahead of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ($28M 3-day) and Trolls Band Together ($30M).
Josh Cooley directed what has been described for months as one of Paramount’s highest-testing animated movies. The $75M production tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, who were buddies before becoming sworn enemies.

After playing around with genre in a more confined sandbox with Crawl and Oxygen, Never Let Go finds Alexandre Aja venturing back to terrain similar to that of 2003’s High Tension. As in that home invasion thriller, the remote setting in Never Let Go generates an oddly claustrophobic tension all its own, only here the home is a reliable place of safety. It’s a bastion in the woods that protects fraternal twins Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) from “the Evil” that lies outside their doorstep, and which could destroy them with a single touch. Or so their Momma (Halle Berry) tells them on a daily basis.
Momma demands that whenever her boys go outside, they tie a rope that’s connected to the home around their waists, allowing them to wander only so far into the surrounding woods. This symbolic umbilical cord imagery spells out...

Once upon a time, there was a filmmaker named Alexandre Aja. His career was fascinating in the way it wasn't strictly auteurist, for while every director has their unique stylistic tics and proclivities, not everyone has a distinctive, strong signature. Aja has certainly always been a genre filmmaker, one who's interested in subversion and twists, in playing around with the conventions of genre, and in being unafraid to use audience's sympathies against them. Whether it's been in the brutal, New French Extremity slashers of "High Tension" and "The Hills Have Eyes," the gleefully exploitative "Piranha 3D," the literary roots of "Horns" and "The 9th Life of Louis Drax," or the suspense exercises of "Crawl" and "Oxygen," Aja has always found ways to surprise and upset (in every sense of the word) with his films.

French director Alexandre Aja has been known as a member of the horror helming fraternity called the “Splat Pack,” named for the extreme violence in their films. Certainly, many of his pictures, from the 2003 breakthrough Haute Tension and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, to his exceptional, and most successful film to date, 2019’s Crawl — in which a family is trapped in the crawl space of their home as alligators surround them during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida (a personal favorite of Quentin Tarantino) — have proved his chops as a genre filmmaker. Now, he steps up to another level with a less gory and more psychological thriller style of film, Never Let Go, in which Halle Berry stars as a mother of twin boys who is traumatically haunted by her own lifelong demons, which she passes on to them in their remote house deep in the woods.

For many parents, convincing children to listen to your hard-won wisdom and avoid making the same mistakes for themselves is a daunting challenge. Adults are placed in charge of the world because they’ve lived long enough to experience its dangers firsthand, but each new generation is born convinced that no harm could possibly come from playing with those matches or staying out past that curfew. The contradictory desire to shield our offspring from the traumas that shaped us while allowing them enough independence to become fully fledged adults is often one of the defining questions of parenthood.
Alexandre Aja’s “Never Let Go” illustrates that age-old parenting challenge with a very literal metaphor. A woman known only as Mama (Halle Berry) lives with her sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) in a remote forest cabin where mere survival is an all-encompassing task. Years have gone...

We’ve also got drama with the dwarves, in-fighting amongst the elves and that guy who most definitely is Gandalf is wandering the desert with a harfoot.
Absent in Season 2 is Nazanin Boniadi who played Bronwyn, who exited the show. But new to the cast are Ciaran Hinds, Rory Kinnear and plenty more filling out this prequel series that tackles J.R.R. About two years ago, we heard that Halle Berry had signed on to star in a horror movie called Mother Land, with genre regular Alexandre Aja on board to direct. Last year, the project went into production under a new title, Never Let Go. Earlier this year, we saw the unveiling of a teaser poster, which just featured text on a snakeskin background (you can take a look at the teaser poster Here). Lionsgate is planning to give Never Let Go a theatrical release on September 20th – and with that date just three weeks away, a new trailer for the film has arrived online! You can watch it in the embed above.

Lionsgate has released the new trailer and poster for Never Let Go, the psychological thriller directed by Alexandre Aja.
Written by Kc Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the horror film will open in theaters on September 20, 2024. It is rated R for strong violent content and grisly images.
In this new psychological thriller/horror, as an Evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother, played by Academy Award winner Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball), and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond.
Needing to stay connected at all times—even tethering themselves with ropes—they cling to one another, urging each other never to let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.

"After your rope broke, did you notice anything?" Lionsgate has unveiled a second trailer for Never Let Go, a dark woods horror from mastermind genre filmmaker Alexandre Aja. It's still set to open in September in just a few weeks from now. Never Let Go follows a mother and her fraternal twin sons who have been tormented by an evil spirit for years and are convinced to never let go of their family’s protective bond. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, their connection is severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival. It's set almost entirely at a creepy old cabin in the woods. Halle Berry stars as the mother, with Percy Daggs IV & Anthony B. Jenkins as the two boys. The concept of this involving them all being tied together with this rope is nifty, I just hope it proves to be more...

Survival thrillers are awesome. Be it the dark forests or the open seas, humans are the most vulnerable creatures out there, and it’s always thrilling to see them come to terms with the fact that they’re not exactly at the top of the food chain. The on-screen portrayal of this eternal battle between man and the wild has changed over the years. The birds that we see on the screen in The Birds were achieved via real birds, mechanical birds, and a ton of visual effects and special effects. Jaws used a mixture of stock footage and a shifty mechanical shark to inspire terror. Bart the Bear achieved iconic status with his appearance in The Edge. And with advancements in visual effects and CGI, we got realistic-looking predators in films like Snakes on a Plane, The Grey, The Revenant, The Shallows, Crawl, and Beast (the one with Idris Elba...

Before rewatching Mirrors (get it Here), I was a little confused as to why it’s either forgotten or, honestly, kind of hated on. It was one of those movies that I saw in theaters when it came out and then have clear memories of when it came to my Blockbuster for rent. It’s got a fun cast of reliables and was directed by one of the early 2000s freshest and goriest directors. The director has gone on to have a steady and varied career and his new movie starring Halle Berry called Never Let Go sounds as intriguing as ever. After watching Mirrors again, I still really enjoyed it, but I now understand why it has the reputation it has and why it’s perfect for a black sheep. Let’s take a look but maybe be wary of any mirrors that don’t look exactly right.

Hurricanes are frightening all on on their own without having to involve a predatory animal. Yet Carlos Brooks’ Burning Bright not only features a Category 3 hurricane, a ferocious tiger is thrown in for added effect. Back when this film was first announced, its plot was met with laughter and doubt; the idea was as intriguing as it was ridiculous. Over time though, this suspenseful story of a girl, a boy, and a tiger has become a shining example of how to follow through on a high concept.
Two distinct yet equally uncontrollable forces are on display at the beginning of Burning Bright. As Hurricane Isabel builds a sense of foreboding in the background, a young woman finally confronts her family situation. The collegebound Kelly is making the difficult decision of leaving behind her autistic brother Tom when life catches her off guard again. Kelly’s plans are dashed after her...

After 26 years of making its players endure some of the most physically demanding competitions in reality television history, “The Challenge” is officially over the hill.
In honor of its milestone 40th season, MTV is bringing back a record-breaking 40 contestants to face off in “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras.”
Starting this Wednesday, the competitors will be evenly split into four eras depending on when they were introduced to the franchise — Era 1, Seasons 1-10; Era 2, Seasons 11-20; Era 3, Seasons 21-30; and Era 4, Seasons 31-39 — competing for their share of the $1 million prize.
As always, the fan-favorite veterans include representatives from “The Real World” and “Road Rules,” as well as “Fresh Meat,” “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” “Love Island,” “Exatlón,” “Survival of the Fittest” and “Are You The One?” Plus, longtime host T.J. Lavin once again returns to simultaneously encourage and berate the hopefuls, this time from Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

Alexandre Aja is returning for more alligator action as Crawl 2 starts taking shape at Paramount. More on the sequel below.
2019’s Crawl was an effective thriller in which Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper found themselves going head-to-head with some nasty alligators. The film scared up an impressive $91.5m at the box office on a budget of just $14m.
Talks about a sequel started almost right away, but the last we heard about any concrete plans was in 2021 when director Alexandre Aja talked about the possibility of returning to gator-infested waters with a brand new story and new characters.
Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Aja is officially on board for Crawl 2 and Paramount Pictures is looking to shoot the film this fall in Europe. Andrew Deutschman and Jason Pagan are on script duties, but there’s no official word on the plot yet. However, THR seems to have sources who...

Aquatic horror has provided us with some all-time great flicks, especially when looking at all of the homages and blatant knock-offs in the wake of "Jaws." Trying to evoke the feeling of Bruce the shark attacking a boat is one thing, doing it well is something else entirely. For the most part, filmmakers have accepted that "Jaws" was lightning in a bottle and chosen to take a different approach to apex predators in the water, embracing the B-movie sleaze of old-school monster movies and delivering a story as bonkers fun as terrifyingly exhilarating. While it's highly unlikely a person will be attacked by a shark, bear, alligator, or bear hopped up on cocaine at any point in their lives, the possibility is still greater than a zombie apocalypse or a werewolf.

On a $13 million production budget, Crawl scared up over $91 million worldwide, with sequel talks beginning almost immediately.

It’s been 15 long years since Sam Raimi last helmed a film in the genre he knows best, but the filmmaker is now finally returning to the horror arena with a new project. After a few fumbled forays in the Disney big-budget machine, Raimi is now attached to direct the horror thriller Send Help.
Set up at 20th Century Studios, Deadline reports the tone of the two-hander set on a desert island falls “somewhere between Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Misery and Robert Zemeckis’ classic Castaway.” Scripted by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, a theatrical release is planned for the project.
While Raimi has had his hand in a number of horror features as a producer the last decade or so, with the Evil Dead, Poltergeist, and The Grudge reboots, as well as Crawl, Don’t Breathe, and more, it’s beyond exciting to see him return behind the camera for a genre outing.

French director Alexandre Aja has been in the horror game for a long time; over two decades, in fact. His 2003 breakout “High Tension” cemented him as an up-and-comer in the genre, and after moving stateside to work in Hollywood, he furthered his career with remakes like “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Piranha.” But Aja hasn’t had a real hit since 2019’s “Crawl,” a taut survivalist thriller B-movie that revived the director’s career.

Oooh, this looks creepy.
"Never Let Go" is a new horror film from Alexandre Aja, director of the pretty good remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and the excellent killer alligator movie "Crawl." With his new feature, Aja seems to be channeling "A Quiet Place" crossed with a bit of the supernatural, resulting in this effective trailer. In "Never Let Go," Halle Berry plays a mother who is hiding out in the woods with her twin sons. According to Berry's character, these are post-apocalyptic times. Berry tells her sons that they'll be safe as long as they tether themselves to the secluded cabin where they're hiding out. But what's really going on here? And what's lurking out in the woods? I don't know. All I know is that the dog that shows up in the trailer better make it out alive.
