Director Katt Shea said in an interview that a lot of Nancy Drew fans gave her flack over inserting the modern cyberbullying case in the beginning because it's a beloved book and they didn't want there to be anything different. She admitted she suspected there would be complaints while making the film, but did it anyway.
While discussing her previous career as a burlesque dancer, Aunt Flora (Linda Lavin), starts to shimmy and says "Here she is boys! Here she is world!' These are lines from the song "Rose's Turn" from the Broadway musical Gypsy, about burlesque performers. Linda Lavin played the lead role of Mama Rose in the 1973 Broadway revival. Ironically, three of director Katt Shea's earliest films featured burlesque/exotic dancers.
The mention of the Lilac Inn and an "evil twin" near the end of the movie are referencing the Nancy Drew novel The Mystery at The Lilac Inn which also featured an "apparition" who looked just like Nancy.
