The pandemic, although disastrous for most parts of the economy, had one minor upside: a boost in online viewing. The number of subscribers of Portugal’s VOD platform Filmin, for example, has tripled compared with last year, due in part to the lockdown. “We grew as much in three months as we forecast for two years,” Filmin Portugal manager Anette Dujisin told Variety. Classic films have played a major part in driving that growth.

Despite challenges with local classics, Filmin is seeing growing success with heritage films and catalog titles as well as new releases. Filmin has received constant requests from subscribers – even loud demands from some – for more classic films since the service went online in 2016, Dujisin said.

Exclusive: Abramorama has set its spring release schedule with the acquisition of three documentaries in the music and mind, body, spirit space, plus the global re-release of the distrib’s 2017 doc Long Strange Trip: The Untold Story of the Grateful Dead.

Among music fare, Abramorama has taken North American rights to A Dog Called Money about British singer-songwriter Pj Harvey which will open on March 18 for a two-week run at the Film Forum in New York with additional markets to follow.

In addition Abramorama has taken North American rights and global rights management for Rob Beemer’s The Mindfulness Movement executive produced by Deepak Chopra and Jewel, and Tyler Chandler’s documentary about the opioid crisis Dosed.

Irish distributor Break Out Pictures, launched earlier this year by former Element Pictures execs Nell Roddy and Robert McCann Finn, has acquired a hat trick of titles for release in 2020.

It has bought UK and Irish rights to Peter Mackie Burns’ Rialto from The Bureau Sales. The Ireland-uk co-production premiered at Venice Horizons and marks Burns’ second feature, following Daphne in 2017.

It stars Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as a husband and father who becomes infatuated with a younger man (2017 Screen Star of Tomorrow Tom Glynn-Carney) at a time of personal crisis.

The Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) has unveiled the first 29 films on its line-up this year, including the world premiere of Good Thing Productions and Passion Pictures’ The Australian Dream which will open the festival August 1.

The documentary, written by Stan Grant and directed by Brit Daniel Gordon, looks at race, identity and belonging from the perspective of former Sydney Swans captain and Indigenous rights activist Adam Goodes, who in 2013 sparked a national conversation about racism after requesting a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter be removed from the ground after calling him an “ape”.

Ai Weiwei, Werner Herzog to particpate in extended conversations following screenings.

A Spotlight section of screenings followed by extended conversations is the major addition to the programme for this year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest (June 6-11), revealed today.

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and German filmmaker Werner Herzog are among those attending the festival and participating in the section.

Ai Weiwei will present his film The Rest, about Europe’s refugee crisis and the disintegrating humanitarian aid system, which premiered at Cph:Dox in March.

Ian Darling documentary The Final Quarter, which looks at Afl footballer and Indigenous leader Adam Goodes’ public call out of racism and Australia’s heated response, will premiere at the Sydney Film Festival in June.

The festival today unveiled the first 25 films on this year’s line-up, with the full program to launch on May 8.

Made using only archival footage aired at the time, Darling’s doco chronicles the final years of the Sydney Swans player’s career. Other Aussie films announced today include Sophie Hyde’s Animals, which made its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year, and Erica Glynn’s portrait of her mother and Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (Caama) co-founder Freda Glynn, She Who Must Be Loved, which also screened at the Adelaide Film Festival and Berlinale.
