Before his death, western antiquities researcher, Larry Lawrence studied the white handled pistol used in the film. This modified civil war issue navy model revolver, used by one of the Boster Brothers while riding with Quantrill's Raiders and the James Gang had been customized for outlaw performance. The sawed off barrel was sanded smooth and reloading parts were removed to make it lighter and quicker on the draw. This was common practice by outlaws who were out gunned by their pursuers, so to prepare they packed a plethora of pistols. In the film the Boster Revolver however holds an extra secret and very useful compartment which plays a pivotal role in the progression of the Jesse James treasure hunt.
On October 25th of 2020 Lost Treasure of Jesse James won the Best Family Film of 2020 Award at the Green Mountain Christian Film Festival, an event focused purely on faith and family films.
